San Francisco to test wireless parking sensors, cause rat races to momentarily open spaces
We dig the idea in theory, we really do, but we can definitely see this causing more harm than good. Starting this fall, San Francisco will begin a trial involving wireless parking sensors in 6,000 of its 24,000 metered spaces, enabling antsy drivers to be alerted via street signs or cellphones when a spot becomes available. Only one problem -- give 50 anxious motorists the same message that a single spot is unoccupied, and you've just created a bona fide mess. Though it'd probably be fun to watch from the sidelines, wouldn't you agree?

I dont think your allowed to sign up for more then ONE street or neighborhood at a time. I also think its during certain times of the day, and you can only sign up a select amount of times per day or something. Not sure on this, but so Ive been told.
I dont drive, anyone who does in this city is a moron!!

No kidding. I've only visited San Fran, but public transportation seemed WAY more efficient than one's own car. Less gas, fewer headaches, AND you get crazy old women who hit on you! Win-Win-(Win)!

Are you joking? It's not like it's Manhattan. Public transportation absolutely sucks here (and closes down -- save for some grossly inefficient nightbuses -- way too early). I take public transportation to work in the FiDi, but if you're looking to go to the beach, the park, or at least 80% of the other places in the city, it will take you 10x as long on public transportation. This is a great idea.

Look forward to see the increase in accidents.

Try visiting Rome. Thats even worse. Don't even try looking for parking there. Its Chaos. I needed to drive because of my job, conviced them to switch me to a Vespa. Thats why so many drive motor bikes, parking is just more simple.

I can just see one pissed off person with a hammer taking care of this problem.
