One good update deserves another, apparently, because the European version of the
Nokia N78 has just received its second firmware update in just a small handful of weeks. Version 12.046 concentrates the improvements on "softkey selection, Bluetooth stability, video playback, email sending and alarm clock functions," so it seems like a reasonably important update in which to partake -- particularly if it sorts out the blasted right softkey, which has a tendency to get confused with the end key at an alarming frequency. Once again, owners of the North America-friendly N78-3 get left out in the cold, leaving us to ask: what the hell, Nokia?

Chris- So you want NAM *&* updates? Gees- want, want, want.
Get the N82. Better camera, firmware updates & just as slick looking.
No FP2? Who cares.
gordon @ Jul 18th 2008 11:22AM
Properly stated Anthony. People should get the N82 it's got better specs and better price.

Makes you want to smack your forehead and say: I could've had a iPhone!
Shreedhan @ Jul 16th 2008 11:15AM
Not really since in the UK Nokia N78 is cheaper and has more flexible tariffs. iPhone is for the rich and people who don't want a decent camera.
I think when Nokia gets in on the touchscreen market it will create a far more open version of the iPhone.

My N78 Doesn't seem to have a problem, maybe thats why we don't get the updates?
James Bell @ Jul 17th 2008 2:59PM
Darn right NAM needs an update, I've got non stop issues with bluetooth and IMAP email.
S60 is looking more and more like a house of cards - every little update has ripples all through the system.
Should USA users expect OTA updates like Europe or by the (recently broken for a week) Software Updater? Should we expect it in 6 hours, 6 days or 6 weeks? Helllloo Nokia?
Oh and can people talk about a mobile phone without the obligatory Apple fan-boy iPhone comment?
prometheusg @ Jul 19th 2008 7:38PM
I keep reading comments from people saying to get an N82 rather than an N78. The N82 is a good phone, but it doesn't have hsdpa. That's an instant fail for me, no matter what else it has going for it...
Anyway, yeah. Who cares how many times they update the Euro version of the phone? As long as the nam version isn't updated, there's nothing to see here...
James Bell @ Jul 21st 2008 3:09PM
Check the thickness of the N82. They look to have similar specs but the N78 is a pocket-able phone, the N82 is a brick.

Nokia support responds:
"We understand you are inquiring about a firmware upgrade for your Nokia N78-3 device.
James, firmware on Nokia mobile phones is only updated when the update would correct a problem on the phone itself. Firmware upgrades are not updated to add features to the phone.
Your Nokia N78-3 device has been in market since June, there has not been any determination for need of a firmware upgrade."
So it turns out we're all just imagining the problems.

It's finally available via OTA update. 12.046
