HP's iPAQ 910 smartphone now available

Finally, the 14 people who have been waiting patiently can now get their hands on HP's iPAQ 910 Windows Mobile-based phone. There's not much to say you haven't already read -- the HSDPA, WiFi, and GPS equipped device can be purchased unlocked from HP's online store for the tidy sum of $499.99. They're shipping now... so what are you waiting for?

I received one of these yesterday. It looks like the one currently at HP's site, with more buttons and the rounds dpad. I don't use MMS but there is a Text/MMS folder in the messaging app, so my assumption is that MMS is included.

My biggest gripe so far is HP decided to disable WM's screen rotation feature, and since the screen is landscape, several older apps are unusable on the device. Bad HP!! I can't for the life of me figure out why the heck the won't let us rotate the screen, it can't add any cost since it's built into the OS, and people who don't want to use the device horizontally wont.

I smashed my Treo 700WX in the door the other day, so I needed something new. I was waiting for a Treo 800W, but then I remembered I hated Palm. ...and Verizon+CDMA. So a minute ago I ordered one on Amazon.

I like that this thing has a touchscreen + scroll-wheel + QWERTY + GPS + WiFi and doesn't come with a contract. I hate carrier branding.

I wish this had a slightly larger screen that was A LOT brighter.
But this is much better looking than the old Treo 700WX screen. I think it's running at 133dpi like the Q.

I considered the iPhone, but I wanted QWERTY because I type alot. I can type blind on my Treo, and it makes using the phone so nice. I'm so serious about the importance of easy typing that I'll return this if I can't learn to type blind. The keyboard looks bad, but the reviewers said it was nice. ...We'll see.

I'm not turned on by this phone's appearance. ...But it's not that ugly, and I bet it will grow on me.

Almost every reviewer comments on how fast this phone operates. It was scheduled to be a 520Mhz processor, it was released at 412Mhz.
I'll bet you can easily overclock this to 520Mhz. I suspect they lowered it to save battery. Sometimes I like to overclock when I don't mind killing the battery, maybe they should bring back the turbo button computers used to have? Does anyone else remember those?

I like the removable battery.

I wish it had more miniSD slots. I'd like to see two on the outside and four behind the battery. ...But who cares what I think.

...Bottom line, I'm really looking forward to playing with it and I think it's going to be a big upgrade from the 700WX. ...And probably better than the 800W.

Actually older computers had turbo buttons to slow them down to be compatible with older games and programs -- not to speed them up; but now I'm just arguing semantics :-)

...If your Turbo button slowed down your system the guy who connected the wires to the motherboard did it wrong.

Seriously though, tons of Intel chips support "SpeedStep" technology. These chips can be throttled at various speeds. Most phones automatically manage this feature. I wish Intel would force SpeedStep powered devices into giving users the ability to throttle the CPU like the good old days.

Ok, so I've owned the 910 for two days. The phone rocks, the software sucks. More specifically Windows Mobile stucks to use, and HPs software sucks. HP, please give us a clean install (drivers only) option. We don't want your crapware in ROM (or Googles).

The only two things I really dislike about the hardware are the screen-size (too small) and the keyboard (I prefer having some distance between my keys like Treo/Palms). I still can't type blind on it, but give me a week. ...If I can't type blind by then I'm returning it.

PS: This is the fastest Windows Smartphone I've used. Pocket Nester runs great on this, even with music playing in the background while downloading. ...Which is nice.

I am thinking of getting the HPiPAQ 910 ,and as you all know it is $500 .So my question to those who know more about PDA /phone is , do you think this the best out their? I need it as PDA more than phone .
