A reasonable way may not be forthcoming unless you're able to swing one from somewhere in Europe. Countries like France and I believe Italy enjoy legislation which demands that consumers are given the option of buying an unlocked device from operators, albeit on a pay-as-you-go wicket.
I'd love to get one myself - but it's always possible that the boys from Cupertino have managed to lock their baby down too tight this time what with the in-store registration and activation.
