Is T-Mobile's 3G service rolling out nationwide in October?
According to the overactive internet rumor party line, T-Mobile is planning to take its currently limited 3G service nationwide come October. TmoNews claims -- thanks to an anonymous tipster, of course -- that on October 1st, the telco will bring speedy service to 27 of its top markets, including Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, and Miami, amongst others. Of course, right now this is pure speculation and hearsay, until we get confirmation from T-Mobile (or at least some hard evidence), we'll just have to keep our fingers and toes crossed.[Via Boy Genius Report]

Although I've grown pessimistic about T-Mo's ability to get 3G rolled out in any kind of timely fashion, an October launch would fit with the data. Lots of post on other forums about minor service outages all over the country with T-Mobile. Upgrading the towers for AWS would go a long way towards explaining these outages.

Isn't the 1700 MHz frequency supposed to penetrate walls better? If I could get better reception in my apartment and not be stuck with a H@H enabled phone, I'd be a happy little boy.

the real question is:
is this 3G service going to be compatible with the iphone 3G???
i'm hating the idea of having to switch to AT&T... but i'm more loyal to Apple than to T-mobile and want that 3G iphone badly!
any official news would be greatly appreciated... i'd love to be able to stay on tmob and use a 3G iphone (unlocked off course and with full 3G service, not on EDGE).

No.

Good luck with Apple rolling a 1700MHz 3G radio in...because it isn't there right now.

Different frequencies.
Correct me if I'm wrong people, but from my understanding, you won't be able to use any other manufacturer/carrier phone for data on the T-Mobile USA 3G setup. It would also make sense to assume the Xperia is going ATT unless they do some changes to the hardware.
This is why I'm contemplating going to AT_T (no brainer if they get the SonyX1), or to sprint if they get the Touch Pro.

@Kumar:
Thanks for your response. That's weird though, a couple of weeks ago I was talking to a Tmob rep and he told me that they are coming out with "the Sony X1" during the summer. I didn't pay attention to his comment because I'm not interested in the X1 at all... but now that you mention it that might be the case...
I still think I'll sadly be moving to AT&T pretty soon dough... gotta get that iphone 3G.

I've held my breath for TMO 3G, and I seriously doubt it goes national in October. For god's sake, it was supposed to come out in 2006. it's 2008 and it's in what... 2 markets?
I love TMO for their customer service. But their phone selection is getting downright ridiculous.
I'll stick to my unlocked iphone and just use the wifi when available. When TMO 3G goes National, by then I'll probably be 50 years old and won't care.

i happened to walk past the t-mobile store yesterday and i decided to ask an employee about the OTA; after looking on the computer in the store for a minute, he told me he didnt know what that is.. :-/
