Everyone peeved at iPhone 3G pricing on some carriers -- Apple included?
To call customer reaction to Rogers' iPhone 3G pricing plans "lukewarm" would be doing them an enormous favor. The plans -- which start out at $60 for just 150 voice minutes and can't be had with unlimited data at any price -- have spawned a pretty big grassroots effort in the form of an online petition that's managed to collect five figures' worth of signatures so far, and while an online petition won't likely net any results, drawing Apple's ire just might. Rumor has it that Cupertino has diverted a portion of Rogers' allotted launch handsets to Europe, leaving some retail stores in Canada with just 10-20 units for the 11th. It's all hearsay at this point, but honestly, a phone that thrives on data perhaps more than any other getting launched without a single unlimited data plan? Come on now, really.

Rogers in Canada isn't the only carrier going for no unlimited data plan. Here in Denmark the carrier Telia has secured the iPhone deal, and they have chosen to provide just one possible contract, called iOn. While it is on the pricey side, it only binds the user for 6 months (as per danish law). They include free sms, as well as free calls to landlines and other Telia mobiles. They also include 300mins per month to other danish cell phones. However, they have chosen to only include 300mb of data, with additional data costing just about $0.25 per mb, and with no possibility of unlimited data. Very annoying I think.

Forget the lack of unlimited data. Who can afford the new AT&T plans? $30 for data, plus extra for texting? That is nuts. Just for my wife and I to have the new iPhones, it would be a minimum of $140/month plus taxes, making probably $155/month. That is crazy! I loved my iphone, but I get off at this stop.
Aaron @ Jul 7th 2008 10:38AM
You're complaining about AT&T plans? Try $30 for 300mb with Rogers on top of your voice plan (which would be roughly the same price as an American plan). Then tack on $6.95 for the mysterious System Access Fee. Then tack on Caller ID cause that's also not included with your plan (unlike AT&T or the rest of the world).
Dude, I wish we had plans like AT&T does north of the border. And a company a little less concerned about quarterly profits when we have among the lowest cell phone adoption rates in the industrialized world.
miklm @ Jul 7th 2008 10:39AM
mclark2112, the "new" AT&T data plan is the same as it is for every other "smartphone"/BlackBerry. Considering iPhone's better browser and the new 3G makes higher data transfers more likely, I think its more than fair pricing. I'm paying more than that now for data+tethering on my Verizon BlackBerry -- I'll actually have a cheaper overall plan by switching to AT&T but will lose the tethering function (if I switch).
The lack of tethering is the only option I see missing from AT&T. $5 is fine for 200 texts; I don't use more than 10 in a month anyway, never use MMS or video recording so the lack of those features is no concern to me.

Rogers is the evil empire. Just rebel and leave Rogers with a bunch of unsold iPhones and make them change their ways.
Chris Are @ Jul 7th 2008 4:31PM
That would be amazing.
Oskin @ Jul 8th 2008 2:36AM
Amazing indeed! Man i seriously wish they can't even sell half of them! They will get the message! I heard Bell is going to have an unlimited plan for the Samsung Instincts (for a cheap price). Alright thats no iPhone but still, unlimited data is a winner for me!
snowenloe @ Jul 7th 2008 10:23AM
WOW. Rogers is unbelievable. While I continually get raped by Verizon, Rogers iPhone plans make my bill look like weak sauce. Truly a monopoly. While an iPhone isnt right for me, it should be available at a reasonable rate to our brothers north of the border.
Vancouver rocks!
granteezy @ Jul 7th 2008 10:36AM
Thanks for the support engadget mobile! We need all the help we can get up here with our ridiculous price plans for iPhone! The more coverage this gets, the better!
Riley Freeman @ Jul 7th 2008 10:51AM
telus and bell offer unlimited data for 30$ so if users are that unhappy there are options. u shouldnt stick to a cheap ass carrier u should stick it to them
Joseph Singer @ Jul 7th 2008 11:13AM
There's 0 GSM competition in Canada. That's why Rogers can charge whatever they like. When Rogers absorbed Fido one of the first things they did was to eliminate "City Fido" which was a plan that you could make unlimited calls in your local area for $40 per month. Of course they quashed that as it was a competitor for their own VOiP service (Rogers also owns Rogers Cable and Rogers Video as well.)
TeeDee @ Jul 7th 2008 11:17AM
The online petition is now over 45000 signatures. Please join the petition at www.ruindediphone.com

ooops, wrong web site.

Fred @ Jul 7th 2008 1:19PM
It was obvious that the Iphone, now geared for business and MS Exchange, along with a reasonable plan, would hurt too much Telus/Bell. So Rogers came with this stupid data plan instead of starting a new war on price with them.
Rogers + Telus + Bell = Collusion. And the Canadian gov is totally sleeping on this.
Rick @ Jul 7th 2008 1:36PM
Sweet so if that's true that means we get flipped off by both Rogers and Apple! First being offered a terrible voice option with the plans, and then not being able to have one of these until...well until Apple ships more. Great!
I found out today it's possible to keep my existing voice plan and add on a $30/300MB data option...that's the only reason why I'm still getting it, I hope 300MB should be enough for the time being...
iAnders @ Jul 7th 2008 2:32PM
Operator Netcom in Norway have a $100 /month unlimited plan and $650 for the iphone. Pretty steep...
Is it the case that New Zealand customers can activate at home?
alex.csar @ Jul 7th 2008 8:46PM
Not in NZ (as far as I know) but home activation's a goer in the UK, with O2 home-delivering iPhones.
Blair Thiessen @ Jul 7th 2008 3:47PM
even American cell phone prices are bad but when you look at Canadian prices they make the American cell companies look good.
RC @ Jul 7th 2008 6:56PM
Not to mention that Rogers has 3 year contracts instead of 2 year contracts. Is it the same for Telus and Bell?
Canadians pretty much bend over when they sign on the dotted line.
Scazza @ Jul 7th 2008 9:50PM
Yes Bell and Telus both have 3yr contracts.
However Bell has unlimited EVDO use on their data devices for 30$ ontop of aregular plan, which is pretty good when paired with an HTC 6800 or BB8830. Why Rogers isn't responding to it competitively is a little odd. Sure the iphone is great, but most of the windows devices can do much of the same stuff nowadays
blameboy @ Jul 7th 2008 10:48PM
We are so outdated on both plans and phones that it isn't funny anymore. One of my Asian friends just moved here. I took her to dealers to check out our phones and plans. She just laughed and said her grandmother used better phones/plans.
Jamar @ Jul 8th 2008 12:06AM
Geez, I get cheaper prices with my China Mobile SIM roaming in. That is sad.

Guys, you really have nothing to complain about if you don't live in New Zealand.
I rushed to my computer at 10 a.m. this morning in total excitement over Vodafone's plans for the iPhone, only to be utterly disappointed to say the least! Disgusted might be a better word.
$250 per month for 1 GB of data - that's the top plan too, the only plan you can get in order to pay "only" $199 up front for the phone. Need I say more?
KraziJoe @ Jul 8th 2008 12:23PM
Well you could say more, but it's gonna cost ya.
s @ Jul 8th 2008 12:27PM
fwiw i have had my iphone for 7 months. according to my phone usage i am still under 700mb sent and received for those 7 months. i use the browser fairly often, so 400 mb a month doesn't seem like a huge deal breaker.
craig_andresen @ Jul 9th 2008 12:48AM
I can't believe people are thinking that the new 3g AT&T plans are so reasonable. I think AT&T should be added on to the petition!! Yeah, they're the same as their plans for many of their other smart phones aimed at enterprise users, but come on. Add $10/month for data, plus don't include text messages and you're looking at a $15 to $20 per month increase in the minimum plan cost, bringing it to $75 to $80/month before taxes. For the people like me who would not be using this phone for business (and thus don't get a phone subsidy), it's a total dealbreaker.
mar1b0r0man @ Jul 9th 2008 10:40PM
Also, in Canada the iPhone is unavailable for purchase from any Apple store, it can only be bought and activate from a Rogers store.
Yup, in Canada customers get screwed by Rogers daily :(
