Apple orders 50 million iPhone NAND chips from Samsung, rest of world put on hold?
Daaaamn, talk about clout. If DigiTimes' sources are correct, then Samsung, the world's primary supplier of flash memory, just told its non-Apple customers to suck it in favor of a "large batch of orders" it received from Cupertino. The order, is said to be for 50-million "8Gb-equivalent" (we assume they mean gigabyte, or GB) NAND chips "mainly for use in Apple's iPhone." This order follows a June procurement for 25 million of the same chips. In response, Samsung has reportedly told its lesser customers that it would "sharply cut supply" of NAND to them while the order is being fulfilled. The shortage is compounded by Samsung lowering its manufacturing output in April and May in an attempt to reduce oversupply. Still, if these numbers are true (they seem high and DigiTimes can be hit or miss with its Apple source) then the world is about to be awash in iPhone 3Gs come July 11th.
Update: We've given the Gigabits vs. Gigabytes a bit more thought. If it's 50 million 8Gbit chips as stated, they would divide evenly across about 2.1 million 8GB iPhone 3Gs plus another 2.1 million 16GB models. A reasonable production run for Apple's global launch but an order which shouldn't be so taxing on Samsung's production capability.

Apple can order a billion NAND's from Samsung minus 1. I will not be buying the 3G Iphone with their jacked up PHONE PLANS. I think they are crazy and I work for ATT.

You are either a new employee at AT&T or are not in the know. With the iPhone 3G, you can use your normal plan with the added $39 iphone data plan which gives you unlimited data. So I have no idea what your talking about by jacked up phone plans. The data IS $10 more for the 3G at $39 a month. But that is what everyone pays for unlimited data on PDAs and Blackberry units anyways. So now us iPhone users will pay just as much as everyone else. We are not getting ripped off.

No Chris the plan is not good regardless of how you spin it. I know the plan is 39.99 plus the 30 data that makes it $69.99; then you add the text messaging. This is nickle and dimming the consumer. Trust me I am not new nor am I on the Mobility side of the house.

@The1 - How is this different than getting ANY OTHER PDA ON AT&T? For my Tilt, it was $39 for unlimited data PLUS $19 for unlimited text messaging! So since its like this for other PDAs on AT&T why single out the iPhone saying they are ripping you off? Its just $39 PERIOD for unlimited data. And no, that does not include text messaging, but that is no different than the way IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN.

No I am not new to ATT. I have been with them for a while. Regardless of how you spin it ATT is penny pinching the consumer over the Iphone and it may backfire.

They think they're going to sell 50 million? That's laughable.....

Chris where does everyone pay $30 month for a pda? Sprint chargers $15 a month for unlimited data on all pda blackberry is 30 but come with unlimited txt and picture, video messaging also if you want to make it $30 for all pda on sprint it includes unlimited data everything. That would be $50 on att to have unlimited txt. Not to mention Sprint 3g coverage is way better and faster than ATT.

@periks19: Christopher Cox was referring to at&t customers. he never mentioned sprint. i thought that was pretty obvious.
@the1: no. it's very clear and it's the same with all phones. one plan for voice. one for data. where do you work at at&t, the mail room?

Is any one else confused about why samsung would neglect their other customers to supply the iphone, I mean, isn't samsung producing a device, SGH-I900, in competition with the iphone.
firesign @ Jul 3rd 2008 4:29PM
not confusing at all. it's pure business. apple is contracting with samsung for 50 million of a component they make. they are as happy to take apple's money as anyone's.
