Nokia E66 mini-review

Gallery: Nokia E66 mini-review
We got the E66 in black, and like it immensely more than the white of the E71 we played with -- both phones come in both flavors. Both of them show fingerprint smudges just as readily, but there's just something about the blackish gray that seems more for-serious.
The actual slider mechanism of the E66 is golden. We really have no complaints. It takes little effort to pop it open, it slides forth with glorious and stately ease, and then returns to its original state with a minor flick of the thumb. If anything the sliding action is too magical, causing us to fiddle with it incessantly out of sheer joy.
We wouldn't call ourselves keypad connoisseurs -- you'll usually find us with a QWERTY phone in hand -- but if there was ever a numeric keypad worth fiddling with, the E66's clicky, slightly textured plastic keys are texter's best friend.
Oddly enough, the biggest difference we felt between the two devices was the screen orientation -- S60 is just much better suited to a portrait orientation like on the E66, displaying more menu options, more messages, more contacts and the like. Even web browsing felt more efficient, oddly enough.
One area where both phones shine -- that we failed to mention with the E71 -- is the clear talk quality and boosted reception we received in comparison to our iPhone in the same areas. Granted, iPhone is a noted under performer on both accounts, but the 3G radios and strong audio quality of the E71 and E66 were certainly squeezing a lot more out of the exact same airspace. We also got a bit more chance to test battery life, and while we don't have any scientific results on that front, the E66 was able to remain on standby for an impressive stretch, and neither phone seemed to be much phased by regular usage.
It's a lot easier to see how a QWERTY device like the E71 could be a "statement" from Nokia and help it get a toehold in a US market dominated by BlackBerry and Windows Mobile, but the E66 certainly can't be ignored as a capable and svelte performer in its own right.

Constable Odo @ Jun 30th 2008 9:39AM

Razor1973 @ Jun 30th 2008 10:24AM
Well, meh... you go get your iPhone, meh... try to find an instant messenger, meh... OK, not one on there, so let's jailbreak it and get it from the Installer, meh... application. Done. True multitasking, baby!

I'm in love with this phone....

Thank you for your mini review. I actually have a question regarding the color choices.
I have always preferred black/dark phones, but I am seriously considering a white E71 to replace my E61i.
What is it about the white that you did not like? I mean, would you normally like a white phone better, but there was something in particular about this one that turned you off? Is the plastic very smooth and shiny or is it porous and prone to get quite dirty with use?
Thank you.

Mostly a personal preference, but the black just seems more cohesive and more high-end, while the white makes it look a bit cheap. Not very cheap, just enough to matter. Nothing tangible though, so go with what you like more from the photos.

Can I hate a phone for the font they use.
Because I do.
Hey I am a designer, shit like that bugs me.
Razor1973 @ Jun 30th 2008 11:51AM
I am no designer yet shit like that would bug me too. Fortunately, this does not apply to the S60 phones. I like the font and feel it suits both the O/S look and feel and the phone design. Then again, I'm totally biased. ;-)

these Nokia phones are so sexy. :-) Do Want.

The E66 is the only phone I could consider as a temp upgrade for my E65 till Android phones hit by the end of the year.

And to reiterate...
The E66 is the only phone I could consider as a temp upgrade for my E65 till Android phones hit by the end of the year.
*LOL*

So when these will be available in NA?
Shahryar @ Jul 1st 2008 8:47AM
Hmm.. phone looks good, but I think I want to hold out for something better to replace my N76 with. If this had T-mobile 3G bands, then I'd seriously be debating, but it doesn't (right?)
stu @ Aug 3rd 2008 6:28PM
you mean HSDPA???? from researching phones i fancy this one to replace my N95 in november. i know it has HSDPA as i need fast mobile internet (thru phone and via to laptop). so yes it does.
Shahryar @ Aug 3rd 2008 8:58PM
I believe this phone does have 3G (or 3.5G or whatever), but I don't think it has the bands that are compatible with T-mobile - just AT&T. I Could be wrong though.

I went from qTek S100 (2003SE) to the Nokia 6300. Then got the HP 614c (touch screen with numeric pad was a high priority)
but I recall those few months I exclusively used the 6300 with great fondness, and am actually becoming more and more frustrated with certain failing of the 614c - and this E66 is bearing dead ahead on my radar (reliably fast UI).
I'm off to India in a couple of months (from UK) any recommendations/advice for buying out there?
P.S. another reason I stayed with WinMo was the ability to create Office docs locally (iPhone seriously lacking for a business user), but I saw these E series can edit office docs too ...
P.P.S. Will the Android Dream (see what I did there?) ever come to commercial reality? That would stay my plastic snatching hand ...

Nokia seems to have done their homework on this set too! MUST HAVE!
