Rogers announces iPhone 3G plans, unlimited data isn't one of them

Here we have it, iPhone 3G pricing for our better mannered, gun-toting friends up north. All the plans from Rogers Wireless require that lovely, three-year contract and include visual voicemail, free evenings and weekends, and unlimited WiFi at all Rogers and Fido hotspots. The plans start at $60/month for 150 minutes of voice and just 400MB of data before topping out at $115/month for 800 minutes voice and up to 2GB of data. Rogers Wireless will also offer two voice value packs for popular wireless features: a $15 monthly value pack including Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 2,500 Sent Text Messages and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes; and a $20 monthly value pack including Caller ID, Who Called, Caller Ring Trax, 10,000 Sent Text Messages and 6:00 p.m. Early Evening Calling and 2,500 Call Forwarding Minutes.

Yah that sounds about right, leave it to rogers to milk you out of every last cent, I guess it comes with the territory of a market with only one gsm provider.

When Rogers first rolled out its data package, it was $25 for 2MB. So it is actually getting better now. The price drop is slow because normal Canadians are not using any data device (Canadians like FREE phones and cheap plans.) and Rogers/Fido is the only GSM provider in town.

While these plans are certainly not very good, I think expecting any kind of parity with the US market for plans was absurd. Data in Canada is absurdly expensive. To think it would remain so for everyone other than iphone owners is equally absurd. In any case, I used an unlocked Iphone on Rogers for 6 months. 2 gig of data is more than most people will need given that you cannot tether. I suspect the people that will suffer are heavy youtube users, whoever the hell they are. I simply dont understand the need to use streaming video on a handheld device other than on rare occasions. At the end of the day, prices are headed downward, and will likely continue to drop as more people use these devices for data.

Data is absurdly expensive in Canada because Rogers MAKES it absurdly expensive. There's absolutely no reason for them to be charging such ridiculous data rates. This was an opportunity for Rogers to say to users "Hey, it's about time we joined the civilized world in terms of data rates" and started offering cheap data plans for ALL data users, not just iPhone users. I also don't understand why they have to have different value packs for iPhone users as opposed to regular users?

Funny thing is, data is only expensive on the Canadian GSM network. Telus had offered a $15 unlimited data package during Christmas. They offer that same package for $30 on ANY PDA or Blackberry currently.
I feel bad for the GSM folks who thought Robbers would change just because they now had the iphone.

You should check what Telus $15/$30 so-called unlimited data really means. You have just no idea it is actually "limited" for certain things.

so basically you're paying $40/month for 400 MB in Canada, vs. $30/month for unlimited data in the US. that yawning chasm between the two countries is the sound of Ted Rogers laughing at your stupidity for buying this device, and on a three-year jail sentence yet! You could kill someone and be out of jail in less time.

data in Canada is really not that expensive. Telus offers unlimited data for $30 per month.

Um... Don't know where you're looking, but according to the Telus website the plan for data phones is $100/month for 1GB of download, no voice included.

AT&T's "Unlimited" data isnt unlimited either.
I've seen people get charged before because they used more than 5GB of data. Dont believe me? Google it :)

Hopefully Rogers will allow the iPhone to use their Home Calling Zone, or either Steve Jobs allows it through VoIP. Home Calling Zone from Rogers is basically a VoIP service, only offered through rogers for $15 for local calling and $20 for long distance. VoIP is currently offered to unlocked iPhones, but considering Rogers is now offering actual iPhone plans, the unlock may make the iPhone a 'non-rogers-phone' and therefore not making it illegible for their iPhone plans.
