Official Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM for Sprint Mogul leaks out
Here's a deeply philosophical question for you: if an official ROM is released unofficially, is it official? We don't know, and frankly, we don't care -- the important thing is that a shipping-quality cut of Windows Mobile 6.1 for Sprint's Mogul has found its way onto the interwebs courtesy of the wizards over at xda-developers. It's not clear when Sprint or HTC might make this just a little more official than it already is and release it through one of their support sites, but in the meantime, at least we still have a shot at nabbing the goods through "other" channels. Let us know about any trials or tribulations you face getting your units upgraded, alright?[Via phoneArena]

Caution to anyone looking to updating:
The ability to force roaming has been taken out on this ROM. There are work arounds for this at PPCgeeks.com if you search. Other changes include internet connection sharing is now limited to Phone As Modem plans only (again, there are workarounds online), as well as some applications having issues.
Overall, the BEST rom released yet!

Oh screw that. I'll wait and see if dcd or someone else can add that back. Sprint service sucks in my apartment and I frequently lock it to roaming so I can complete a phone call without dropping it.
Then again, I'm stuck with a second broken Mogul and my USB connection doesn't work (though it charges), so I don't really have to worry about new firmware at the moment. I'm stuck on the old as hell original firmwares with all the bugs and no gps or evdo. :(
TheGasMan @ Jun 25th 2008 9:58PM
@Andrew
You've got EVDO on your old ROM; just it's Rev. 0 and not Rev. A.
Andrew @ Jun 25th 2008 10:38PM
You're correct, I was typing lazy. :)

@ Andrew you can flash to the new leaked rom. Download it and extract the exe. Format your minisd card (Must be 2GB or lower) to fat32. Now go to the extracted folder and rename the file RUU_signed.nbh to TITAIMG.nbh and copy it to the root of the minisd card. Now press the power and camera button at the same time. While holding both buttons down, soft reset your phone with your stylus. After that just follow the onscreen directions and your phone will flash to the new rom.
Goodluck,
Churma

@Churma:
I wish it were this simple. However, you apparently can't flash the bootloader from SD. I spent hours the other day trying to update my phone past where I am, however, I'm stuck with a 1.x version of olipro's bootloader. This was a phone that I stopped using around December when it was replaced with a new one, and now that the new one just died too, I'm back to this one again until I get another new one.
The only thing holding me back is the bootloader. Everything else, radio, OS, etc can flash from SD, but not a bootloader. :(
Churma @ Jun 26th 2008 1:38AM
@ Andrew you can flash from the bootloader as I have done many times while on the road. I flash almost five times a week as I am a rom cooker and get bored of my titan. Search for Mikee4fun over at xda and pm me. I will help you out. PPC Geeks is down do to database issue right now.
Cheers,
Churma

I upgraded to this ROM on my new/replaced Mogul yesterday and it works great, no problems yet.
Installing the new ROM took about 5 minutes and went off without a hitch.
Before this I had the beta ROM that was leaked last month and it might just be my imagination, but my battery life has lasted much longer in the last 24 hours with this new ROM. Again, might have nothing to do with the ROM update but I thought it's worth mentioning, since this phone notoriously sucks the battery life so quickly.
Christian @ Jun 26th 2008 1:07AM
I think i read / saw a review on the windows mobile 6.1 for touchscreen devices (Pro) and they said that battery life was increased with the new rom by up to 20% so your analysis is correct.
Thats great news that this was proven correct.

Just to warn everybody, it looks like Sprint silently disabled data roaming as well! Even using the PPCGeeks hack to turn it back on, you will be able to connect without error, but you won't be able to send or receive!
Churma @ Jun 26th 2008 1:31AM
@ Gas Man you can send and receive. You have to run IOTA and have it re provision the data on the phone. This is under start/settings and then click on the phone applet. Then you click on the services tab and highlight internet and select get settings button. Now click on start and it provision the phone. IOTA will run and then after its done you have data. I have two Titan (aka Moguls) one on the leaked sprint rom and one running diamond sys ported over to the titan. I am using radio versions 3.42.02 on both and both work just fine. The diamond core is much quicker though. For more info check out xda

Wow I'm an idiot! Thanks Churma

Actually I'm using dcd's 3.2.0 build w/ battery reg tweaks. the BEST rom ever. 3.42 radio too
anon @ Jun 26th 2008 10:12AM
The thing that bothers me the most is the mail settings. I have my Yahoo account set up on there. If there's an email for my wife, I would delete it off the phone before, and it would still be on the server. Now the only options for deleting are to delete from the server or to send to the trash on the server. Other than that, no problems for me
Cycomachead @ Jun 26th 2008 12:23PM
I was going to say. Use DCD's 3.2.0. It's got a newer WM build and it's just better, but apparently I'm not the only one.
But if stupid verizon would get us an update it'd be nice.
BlissX @ Jun 26th 2008 2:59PM
I'm thinking of nabbing a Mogul, but I have to ask.
Did the BT issues ever get resolved with the updates?
Kris @ Jun 29th 2008 12:44AM
Don't bother buying this phone. I own it and while it's not too bad, the ridiculously low amount of ram they put in this thing (64MB) makes everything awfully slow. On my old 700wx I could run many apps at once and it would be fast (I never needed to reset it, close processes or anything).
With the Mogul I have to use a task manager and constantly close out applications that have been running for some time.
Very fucking annoying. It's the worst phone purchase I've ever made... ok, maybe it's better than my old sidekick but still...
ShadowGod @ Jun 26th 2008 3:57PM
The only problem I have with this ROM is with the "Data Provisioning". It says "Preparing Vision Services" and then I get an error.
Seems like this ROM isn't ready yet ...
Kris @ Jun 29th 2008 12:46AM
Unfortunately you'll get that when upgrading ROMs while on Sprint's network. It's fucking annoying but let it sit without attempting to access the internet for like an hour then reset it and it'll be good to go.
Otherwise call Sprint so they can help you re-provision your data service (or look it up with Google). It's a common (and annoying) issue.
emblink2008 @ Jun 26th 2008 9:17PM
whats the point, this phone sucks
cant run programs with out freezing up
its has a ridiculously low memory for such a otherwise great phone
Pocket DP @ Jun 26th 2008 11:29PM
just loaded the rom works real good for me just saved me from getting an instinct
pdanoob @ Jul 21st 2008 7:34PM
You can also try the steps stated http://dotdoh.com/?p=5 for flashing from SD.
Pretty detailed.
