Apple's iPhone 3G to go on sale at 8:00AM on July 11th?
Don't take a vacation day just yet or anything, but early word has it that Apple's iPhone 3G will actually go on sale at 8:00AM (local time, most likely) on July 11th. If you'll recall (how could you forget, right?), the original iPhone didn't go on sale until 6:00PM on launch day, but considering that the whole checkout process will likely be a fair bit more involved this go 'round, we'd say it's a smart move to get the line rolling early.

i'm in line right now.
Sent from my iPhone
helixtimestwo @ Jun 24th 2008 9:48PM
i dont believe you. Send me an MMS to verify.
Chris @ Jun 25th 2008 6:30PM
He cant send an MMS with an Iphone, hence why I wont get one.
Jeff @ Jun 25th 2008 10:18AM
@Helix and Chris:
iPhone doesn't MMS. Get over it. There are lots of things that some phones do that others don't. MMS does not make or break a phone with some people. "Oh this is a great phone, look - full browser, total touchscreen, GPS, 16GB iPod, complete synchronization. I LOVE THIS PHoooooo.... wait - WAIT!!!! No MMS!!!??? forget it - onto the next..."
iPhone winers. Geesh.
If you want an iPhone and you want MMS, EMAIL THE PIC!!! That's all MMS is - just a simplified emailing. Take a pic, save it, email it as an attachment.
Chris @ Jun 26th 2008 12:07AM
You cant receive them either; and is ridiculous that the Iphone (which does have a bunch of useless feature) would not be able to utilize. Im not whining, Im laughing :) I could care less about the feature set you described to me, most are replaced by other basic items eg. Ipod, navigation unit, a computer. LOL Oh you dont need use those either I guess.
slamEVIL @ Jun 24th 2008 4:05PM
not like it matters. i'm sure they'll be in line days before...
Cygnus @ Jun 24th 2008 4:27PM
OMG - what absolutely amazing news! My life will never be the same again. One day, when I'm 80, I'll be telling my grandkids how I read it here first - the iPhone 3G will be on sale at 8am. Wow. You have the scoop of the century, Engadget! * rolls eyes *
yode @ Jun 24th 2008 4:47PM
its the iPhone. And it's engadget. Put 2 and 2 together.
Ici @ Jun 24th 2008 5:56PM
If this was posted on your usual knitting forum, then yes, it would be a tad unusual. However it is related to gadgets and considering many people will be lining up for one on the 11th, it's good to know at what time the phone is being released. You'd be bitching if on the 12th, engadget said "oh, didn't we tell you it was going to be released at a different time than last year.
TC @ Jun 24th 2008 4:37PM
I got the iPhone on the first day it came out at The Apple Store at The Grove in Los Angeles. I got there at 9 PM, and I waited in line for only 10 mins and was able to purchase the iPhone! I really felt sorry for the people who waited in line over for hours/days... there really was no need to~
Jesse @ Jun 24th 2008 4:39PM
Regardless, I'm still taking pictures of the idiots in line.
lakersin2025 @ Jun 24th 2008 4:45PM
Of topic but you can buy the LG Dare today online at Verizon. Can't wait to see some user opinions on that touch screen phone. May keep me from switching to AT&T.
RF9 @ Jun 24th 2008 5:10PM
I'm gonna go 5 min before they open.
Pay the kid at the front $1000 to take his place.
Bring $20,000 cash, and buy out all of them so no one in line can have them.
Then go sell them on ebay.

Steve, regarding EDGE, there are a couple other inaccuracies in the article that lead me to believe that the sentence towards the ends re EDGE may be more the reporter's speculation than anything else.
I'm really expecting/hoping that Apple will use this week's announcement as an opportunity to intro a 3G-capable iPhone, rather than seriously expecting carriers on your side of the pond to add new infrastructure capabilities everywhere for EDGE... (yes the iPhone is a landmark device, but I find it hard to swallow that _any_ one device warrants that degree of infrastructure investment, especially in a basically obsolete (albeit less power-hungry) technology)
FWIW, the 2 inaccuracies I found were in the 5th & 6th paragraphs:
* the current-gen iPhone supposedly not being able to connect to the WiFi iTunes store (while that's technically true right this second, Apple's publicly stated that the current-gen iPhone will get the WiFi iTunes feature later this month when an automatically-installed software upgrade is pushed out via iTunes desktop syncing)
* the iPod touch supposedly being able to do everything that the iPhone can, except for phone calls (the touch also can't do email, camera, stocks, Google Maps, weather, and notes)
I'm also hoping/expecting that this week's intro will bring the capacity of the iPhone up to 16GB to match the touch...

I stood in line for Return of the Jedi when I was 14. Did I need to? No. Was it fun? Kinda. Was it an experience for me? Yes indeed. I loved it - I'm proud of it.
If they want to stand in line for a phone - to be one of the first to say they got it? Fine - let them.
I sell cellphones and have customers asking about the Bold too. They want me to call them when it's released. Going to make fun of them too?
Jesse @ Jun 24th 2008 5:31PM
I remember going early to a movie once. The movie was Star Wars Episode III but we went early so my friends and I could drink beer in the parking lot. We thought it would be cool since we all turned 21 that year.
Austin Chu @ Jun 24th 2008 5:36PM
July is iphone month. Speak of iphone. An LA times article came out about women who are complaining about iphones being incompatible with longs nails. I commented on this topic on savvywallet.com. They also are accusing apple as being misogynistic and not designing the iphone with a stylus. Are you kidding me?
elbow @ Jun 24th 2008 8:02PM
Doh, pls disregard that old comment.
What I meant to write is that every handset they sell needs to have a service contract attached, so over 2 years, each will cost about $199 + ($70 x 24) = $1879 w/o tax...
SPOKE @ Jun 24th 2008 8:55PM
Every phone with a contract is like that - why since the iphone came out with this pricing structure are you still insisting that your head be up a bulls ass.
Juice @ Jun 24th 2008 8:44PM
I might get one of these if they let me renew my contract. What if I'm not up til' 5-09?
elbow @ Jun 24th 2008 9:55PM
@Juice, it sounds like everyone will be able to get one & doing so will extend your contract 2 yrs, but if AT&T deems you not "eligible for an upgrade," the price may be higher than $199.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/13/iphone-3g-must-be-activated-in-store-and-other-followup-questio/
Jeff @ Jun 25th 2008 10:18AM
@elbow:
Every phone is like that. If you want the new LG Shine, but are not eligible for an upgrade, you will pay the "no committment price." If you want a new Nokia 2610 (free with contract) but are not eligible for an upgrade - you will pay full price.
AT&T, or any carrier for that matter, does not "deem" you eligible for an upgrade. You signed an agreement that sets a certain timeframe. They make you well aware of this when you sign. Being eligible for an upgrade is not some sort of application process. It's not a privilege. They don't have some AT&T Upgrade VP that sits and looks at bills and records who then says "Yes, they are nice people - they paid on time, they do good things - I deem them eligible."
If you're bitter about this process, don't sign a conract for 2 years then. Feel free to pay full price for your phones. Pay 150 for a basic phone, pay 1000 for the latest and greatest BlackBerry. Then you do not have to be "deemed" eligible. You will always be eligible.
slamEVIL @ Jun 25th 2008 3:59PM
@jeff
relax dude. @elbow wasn't being bitter. in both cases he was just answering questions. i think he put "eligible for an upgrade" in quotes because that's how carriers usually phrase it.
good argument though.
