iPhone news roundup: subsidies, Flash, Canada, and beatings

- An analyst for Oppenheimer claims that AT&T is going to be shelling out $325 for each and every iPhone 3G it sells, compared to an average of $200 for other devices on the carrier's shelves. What's more, devices sold in Apple stores (as opposed to AT&T stores) will cost AT&T another $100 for some reason, bringing the grand total to $425 -- not including the $199 or $299 the customer is paying for the 8GB and 16GB models, respectively. Where Oppenheimer is getting its figures isn't exactly clear, but we suppose it's believable -- and as the analyst suggests, the higher subsidy reflects AT&T's confidence that they'll be able to recoup the loss with a higher ARPU.
- The on-again, off-again saga of Adobe Flash on the iPhone continues, with the company's CEO trumpeting during its Q2 earnings call that it now has a version working in the SDK's emulator. That's all well and good, but there's still no sign that Apple wants Flash on the iPhone, and since Cupertino's still the ultimate gatekeeper here, Adobe's efforts could still all be for naught.
- Canada's Rogers has finally decided to stop playing coy and has replaced the silhouette of the mystery device launching on July 11 on its site with the real deal. You weren't fooling anyone anyhow, guys.
- A Columbus, Ohio bus rider was unceremoniously beaten this week in an attempt to nab his iPhone as other riders calmly looked on, showing no emotion whatsoever -- a sad state of affairs, to say the least. Fortunately, the victim was able to hang on to the goods but suffered some injuries in the scuffle. If it had been an iPhone 3G, we'd have to summon every ounce of willpower not to have a go at swiping it ourselves, but an iPhone 1? Seriously, come on.

Yeah, let's beat someone up over a phone, but only if it has 3G.
AND
No one ever beat anyone up over any of the other 3G phones that have been available even before the original iPhone.
letstakeawalk @ Jun 21st 2008 6:28PM
But doesn't it only cost about $100 to actually make the 3g iPhone? I guess it's a great time to be an Apple shareholder... somebody's taking a bath! What kind of profit margin does that give the iPhone? (I'm no financial analyst)

Could it be the Infected from "The Invasion"?

can't understand the excitement about the iphone. sure, it has a nice big screen with a good ui, but the camera is subpar, no video recording (many people use these features as their own memory add-ons), apps are locked down, you have to go through itunes to copy media.. meh, I'll take something a little less gated, thanks.

There is this thing called installer buddy.... When I was going through the drive-thur the guy in the call in back of me was dressed very badly as a woman. I managed to get some of it on film was an iphone video recorder.
huh @ Jun 21st 2008 9:24PM
yeah, but you're talking about an add-on for something that's a given, good quality feature on every other device. it's just symptomatic of the attitude about the iphone. you can 'jailbreak' apps too, but who wants to have to go through the uncertain hassle to do the most basic stuff?

huh - It may surprise you to learn that there are people out there that couldn't care less about having a camera or video in their phone. My current phone has both and I have taken a total of about 10 pictures in the 3+ years I've had it. I'll be getting the new iPhone and I'm sure the camera will be more than adequate.
If I want to take real pictures I'll use my full featured camera. No phone camera is ever going to compare to a good quality dedicated camera. And if I'm in a situation where I really need a picture and my phone is all I have, then it will just have to do.

Yes Peter, the missing word before "can't" was "Peter." Guess I guessed wrong, huh?
Anyway, enjoy your garden path, for sure the competition's going to sit still.

Imagine how much more proud Jobs will be when certain fanboys learn how to work the comment feature properly!

What is all this 'iPhone' stuff? is there a new phone coming? I hadn't heard about this before.
I'm intrigued by this '3G' stuff. Hopefully, someday, other so-called 'phone' manufacturers will invent a device that allows us to communicate using the 'cellular' technology that the iPhone uses. Making it possible to communicate with friends and loved ones with a small, portable, battery operated device.
What a time to be alive!

"No phone camera is ever going to compare to a good quality dedicated camera."
Are you serious? What are you using a digital SLR? Honestly what you said is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard posted on this blog (clak excluded).
Peter, 3 years ago did you say that a phone could never integrate a PDA so you would just carry your Dell Axim around when you needed a "good quality dedicated" PDA? :)
PeterF @ Jun 22nd 2008 2:14AM
Thing is, Dell Axim's are still better then any PDA phone today. The X51v was a beast!

I pity thee who hasnt tasted the goodness that is my Nokia N82's 5MP xenon god-cam. Saves me carrying around a bulky camera in my pocket - besides it plays games and makes calls too.
Charles @ Jun 22nd 2008 10:06AM
Well, this is a true story except for the the described behavior of the other riders. The video shows 2 other people, 2 women, 1 with a small child and stroller who tries to get away, the other sitting directly behind the seat where the man is being beaten. She seems to me to be frozen in fear. The man doing the beating pauses and looks around, right at her. I don't know what I would do faced with such violence. There are no other people in view so I don't know if this is one of those examples of public numbness to violence or just inaction due to shock and fear.

Adobe should stop creating applications for Mac products in response to Apple not allowing their Flash player/plugin for the iPhone.
That'll learn'em.
