Samsung Instinct available June 20th for $129.99, strings attached
In a move that Sprint clearly hopes will fuel the iPhone vs. Instinct fires, the company today announced that it would be selling its lauded touchscreen phone starting June 20th for a price point of just $129.99. Of course, that takes into account a new two-year contract and $100 mail-in rebate, but it still comes in lower than the expected $199.99 price tag we'd been hearing about. Oddly, to activate the phone Sprint stipulates that you have to choose one of their unlimited data plans -- which start at a minimum of $69.99 per month (with 450 minutes of talk-time) -- so monthly costs hover right on level with AT&T's iPhone options... unsurprisingly.

Looks like SERO will be an option:

Funniest part: it will be 1 PENNY less than the iPhone with Sprint's $69.99 unlimited data plan. OUCH.

Your post oozes ignorance.
MobileRoar @ Jun 18th 2008 12:13PM
You wanna make a valid point or two or just ooze general nothingness?
Cactus @ Jun 18th 2008 2:03PM
I'm not Eric, but I'll bite.
The blog you cite says "1 penny less WITH service". That comparison doesn't make sense in the first place... if you compare apples to apples (heh) -- phone+service vs phone+service -- you'd still have a $70 price difference.
If you had bothered to read the entire post (which is awkwardly written, I'll give you that), the author here is actually PRAISING this deal, saying it will make Sprint/Samsung customers "very happy"
You've taken the blog's nonsense comparison and dishonestly twisted it to actually put down this deal by obfuscating the "WITH service" part and adding that "OUCH" bit at the end. You've also purposely overlooked that Sprint's monthly service fee includes unlimited text messaging, GPS and TV, which AT&T does not.
"OUCH".
TheSuburbanWhiteBoy @ Jun 18th 2008 10:50AM
Even funnier part... sprint TV, gps and text also included in the plans... AT&T doesn't include any of those.... pull your iphone's out of your rears
Dave @ Jun 18th 2008 11:26AM
Being an AT&T customer, I second this comment...the iPhone plans don't give unlimited text (actually I don't think they give much text at all). Sure, Sprint still sucks major ass, but let's at least be a little objective when reporting, okay? Just another Sprint fiasco on Engadget...
http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/02/samsung-instinct-requires-unlimited-sprint-plan-of-100-or-more/
Of course after Block posted that without even checking the facts (because it sounded like an easy way to blast Sprint), users did check the facts and then it was removed. Just search on Google "engadget samsung requires unlimited instinct"...it's the first thing that comes up.
periks19 @ Jun 18th 2008 5:17PM
You also forgot that sprint unlimited nights and weekends start at 7pm that will be about an extra $10 for att and Sprint data network is faster and has more coverage than att. I wonder what is gonna happen when people buy an iphone and don't live in a big city is gonna be running on edge just like the first generation iphone. I have mentioned it before and will again Engadget is so biased towards the iphone and more towards att.

First - are they requiring one of the "Unlimited" (Everything) plans - or an "unlimited data" plan? The difference is are they requiring one of their all-inclusive plans or are they just saying you need to have an unlimited data plan to buy the phone - as opposed to a 5mb plan or 10mb plan.
Second - while it sounds pricey... $69.99 for data, text and a voice plan is not bad. Add up a 450 minute plan, put on unlimited (PDA Style) data and you're right in that ballpark.
Films1018 @ Jun 18th 2008 12:58PM
so how much will the phone be before the $100 mail-in rebate
$229.99?
Jason @ Jun 18th 2008 1:20PM
LOL, you are kidding right?
Frankenstein Black @ Jun 18th 2008 2:48PM
@ Films1018 - Um, yes...
Dave @ Jun 18th 2008 5:05PM
Anyone think there's any chance Sprint would let you get this phone on a family plan?
directall @ Jun 19th 2008 1:12PM
I'm pretty sure you can have it on a family plan.
"Customers can choose from Everything plans for individuals starting at just $69.99 per month for 450 voice minutes or Talk/Message/Data Share plans for families starting at $129.99 per month for 1500 voice minutes to share between two lines."

for 129.99?
Dean @ Jun 18th 2008 7:55PM
If Sprint wants a true iPhone competing phone, they need to go to a computer company like Dell... not Samsung. Samsung can't even make their simple flip phones run smoothly.
brandi.suffecool @ Jun 18th 2008 9:36PM
yeah, i played with one today at work and they're awesome... definitely worth it. cept it's sprint.
