Palm Centro for Verizon unboxing and hands-on
Not much to see here folks, save for a new paint job and a few minor software changes. Still, for those of you on Verizon, this could be just what the doctor ordered. Unless the doctor has a fake degree from a made-up country -- then his orders might not be so good. Regardless, you should feel free to feast your eyes on this cobalt blue number from the folks at Palm in the gallery below!

It is quite fugly. maybe if you put a paper bag over it, you'll forget it hit every branch as it fell from the fugly tree.

In Picture 9 can you tell me what the port on the far left hand side is???
I see the connector and power but that left one has me baffled

Paul @ Jun 12th 2008 11:28AM

Piece of CRAP!!!

I used to love my Treo 650, except for the instability of Garnet that will be fixed with Access Linux... running on top of Duke Nukem Forever.
Have the Palm phones gotten fatter with every iteration since the Treo 650?
Fusion Fuzo @ Jun 12th 2008 12:09PM
i would never take that out of the box

Is it just me that thinks this is a horrible looking handset?
striggity @ Jun 12th 2008 12:36PM
All I know, is that keyboard stinks. (yes, I've held one in my hand and tried to use it. My friend owns the sprint version)

Great keyboard (if you're 10-years-old and only use your thumbnail)!

Cobalt blue, huh? It's the only cobalt Palm lovers will ever get from the company.

I got a chance to play around with the VZW branded Centro about three and a half months ago in Montana of all places. I was very impressed. I have previously owned the Sprint version, and the Verizon one had much more springy keys on it, and web browsing via EVDO was a pleasure. All in all this will be a very solid phone for Verizon, especially at this price point.

Pictures look great! Cant wait to get it.

The keypad is too freakin small. Too small even for pinky text.

Great. My Sony Clie SJ30 has about fifty e-books in it right now, they change all the time (thank you Project Gutenberg and Baen Library)!
My Kyocera Smartphone doesn't have GPS and now Verizon won't let me move its ID to my spare -- the Smartphone plastic starts to crumble after a while around the keypad.
Centro may be the right answer to replace both of them with one device.
How much memory/storage can this thing handle? Memory card?
Does it run all the Palm apps?
Does the screen dim down very low like the SJ30? Or only to "low glare" like some of the other Palm PDAs? Vital for reading in the dark and conserving battery life.
Details please.
Oh, and how hard is it to read holding it in one hand? Vital for reading on BART when standing up. Sony's thumbwheel is perfect; is the Centro able to be handled so PageDown is doable?

I don't know why everyone is bashing this phone.
I own the Glacier White Centro with AT&T, and I have to say that it's been the best phone I've ever had. The battery life is crap, but everything else is amazing. I'll be using mine for quite a while.
