New images of Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 reveal minor updates, new color
Yeah, we know it's not earth shattering news, but we'll take what we can get when it comes to Sony Ericsson's eminently drool-worthy set. The X1's official site has dropped a few shots of the handset in a second color called Steel Silver that show a new XPERIA panel key and some new branding below the screen. Way to tease Sony Ericsson, we're not worried about the labels, just push this out the door this year, pretty please?

The new branding and button-layout is "out for a while" already. At least, the device we got our hands on over one month ago featured the update already (http://www.theunwired.net/?item=photoview-sony-ericsson-xperia-x1-windows-mobile-6-1-professional-smartphone).
Unfortunately, the new X-Panel button killed the Windows Start button (which makes - IMHO - more sense).

Its simply amazing how excited you guys get over these new phones before they come out simply because of their spec list and then get dissapointed when reality sets in when you actually get your hands on one because you realize its still running a 6+ year old OS (and a sh*tty one at that).

Since when is Windows Mobile 6.1 a "6+ year old OS"?
By those standards, the FreeBSD-based OS X (and therefore the iPhone's OS X Leopard derivative) are 1993-esque. (Which it certainly, certainly, certainly isn't).
Obviously you're alluding to Windows CE or something, in which case you're still wrong, as WM 6 is based on CE 5.2. I think someone needs to stop being so asshurt about their 2.5G iPhone purchase in this ever-so-imminent 3G iPhone world.

What's changed? A new skin? Maybe a couple new features and bug fixes? And I use the term bug fixes VERY loosely as anyone who's used Windows Mobile before I'm SURE will attest to.
BTW, I'm VERY happy with my upgrade of my current iPhone from my old 3G Cingular 8525. And I'm VERY excited for my soon-to-be new iPhone next week.

First of all, as I've mentioned above, I was a Windows Mobile user before the iPhone came out (and everyone I knew had one). Can you (or anyone that makes fun of the iPhone) actually say that you've spent any significant amount of time using BOTH devices? No. All you do is sit back from a distance and judge, ignorantly and stupidly.
You can always tell the informed when they make fun of you with stupid immature comments like: "iGay fanboy" Talk about talking out of your ass, it's people like you that clog up these sites with trash.
I mean, hell, let's just take the Wiki article you sent. Each release has seen no more than 10 improvements and most of those don't amount to anything more than what should be offered in a point release. I mean, not even taking iPhone OS 2.0 into account, Apple has offered more added more functionality, than any one of those releases by itself. And the same can be said for Symbian and Nokia.
Bottom line: My image references were just EXAMPLES, but they were there to make a point. Even going back to PPC 2002 which was released SEVEN years ago, Microsoft has done LITTLE to add value or any SIGNIFICANT functionality to it's OS and BTW, they've all required NEW DEVICES (for the most part). I mean I think even SP1 and SP2 for XP added more stuff than all Windows Mobile editions COMBINED.
Do yourself a favor, and next time you want to look like an ass and call someone a fanboy make sure you actually have some REAL facts to back up what your saying and I'd recommend actually going after someone at your maturity level so you don't have to get someone to help you unlodge your foot from your mouth.

I won’t explain why I called you iGay fan boy but I will try to enlighten you why I said you talk through you back side.
OK! Let’s just start by telling you all major releases had more than 10 improvements/additions. You say Apple has added more functionality in 2.0 than any of the WM releases, can you please tell us what these are?
Your image references were just examples to make a point. Very well, they made a lousy point, if any.
You mentioned nothing of significant value has been added with new releases. Well my friend I don't know what you think is of value and what is not. Let me mention a few added things that I find of great value - VGA support, GPS Support, built in keyboard Support, Push Mail, synchronization with outlook, VOIP and last but not least, the gateway that WM opened for countless great apps. These to me add up to much more than just a fancy interface and 2 hands and 2 fingers navigation system.
Anyway you pretend to be so well versed on WM's and yet you say all the new releases of WM's required new devices. My friend I am sorry to inform you that you are wrong and not as knowledgeable about WM platform as you like to pretend. One of the very devices lying on my desk has been through 2 releases.
And WTH are you doing even thinking about Windows XP SP1 and SP2 here. Anyway since you did, let me just tell that you are wrong. SP1 and SP2 for XP did NOT add more stuff than all Windows Mobile editions combined.

So you want me to give you the improvements from iPhone v 1.0 through v 2.0? Sure that's easy. Let me see.....just off the top of my head:

As you probably well know 2.0 isn't done yet but already we know:

and well just look at the above link for the numerous other features being added for FREE and OFFICIALLY supported (see next paragraph).
As for your current phone being upgradeable twice, I'm really not interested in (don't care about) hearing about how you went on to Howard Forums or XDA developers and downloaded a ROM. That CLEARLY doesn't count. What I'm talking about is OFFICIAL support from Microsoft and the manufacturer that DOESN'T void your warranty.
If all you think the iPhone is a fancy interface, then like I said, you are biased and NOT objective. I'm sorry to say, but most people aren't interested in going to obscure (in the general public's eye) forums online to find a decent WM ROM. Sure, a lot of the reason why the iPhone is popular is because it's cool, but it's also popular with many for another reason: Ease of use and reliability. Those are 2 words that I guarantee you aren't even in Windows Mobile's built in dictionary.

It's true, I'm not very excited about this phone and I used to be a massive WM fan. I now have an N95-3 and I can't believe how limited I was using WM.
As for the iPhone thing though, I'm not a huge fan but I do agree with you that the file system allows for a much better user experience. I got an iPod Touch, used off of Craigslist because I wanted something used in case it sucked, and it's turned out to be the best companion to my N95 that a guy could ever want.
Anyway, my main point was going to be, yes, WM hasn't changed at all. The browser was a NIGHTMARE and the graphic capabilities were abysmal--although when I had my SMT5600 it was the best thing out there, and it really was... but that was back in 2004.
Companies have just overlayed their own GUIs but what it comes down to is that beneath all of the pretty, you still have to rely on what is a very VERY old OS with WM.

But what functionality is WinMo unable to supply? I really cannot think of anything it cannot support. To me, if each edition doesn't add "huge" increases in functionality, it shows its successor was pretty damn good. It's just like with bug fixes: the less flaws, the less improvements. Again, I cannot think of anything it cannot support.

Ummm....no. That's completely backwards thinking. That sounds like something that Microsoft would say to defend why they've done a sh*tty job of refreshing their software. Why?
1) If nothing else, improvements can ALWAYS be made
2) There could be PLENTY of other reasons why a company wouldn't update its software or add functionality. Greed, money, lack of developers, etc. Just look at Palm.

This isnt a new feature. Its a long over due one. My 2 year old Sony W850i phone can do group SMS.
Btw WinMo supports video recording, mms, copy/paste. Three basic features needed in any phone. My W850i has it and its 2 years old.

This discussion was never about about a feature for feature comparison and I'm certainly not about to start one now, although I can't resist but point out a couple things.
-WinMo's IMAP support PALES in comparison to OS X's and not just because it's HTML email support sucks but also if I remember correctly (and I could be wrong), but I don't even think Outlook Mobile supports folders beyond the basic Inbox, Sent, Trash, etc.
-If you use 3rd party applications as a way out then there's already HUNDREDS of iPhone applications available and a LOT of them are being developed to translate over to the new App Store, including things like: Video Recording, MMS, etc.
Anyways, as I've mentioned many times, the iPhone's strength isn't in a look-how-big-my-d*ck-is feature list and the reason is because the only type of people that really care about that are the nerds that spend all day posting comments on Engadget.... wait...sh*t......

I played with this at CTIA and it really nice, I am not a fan of Win Mo at all, but the UI is slick and moves well. I am looking forward to seeing a retail version. Its just the right size, and keyboard is almost perfect.

UM, CB17, you're arguing about the interface, not the OS. Whatever you claim about WM and the way the interface has developed (or not) over the years, you can't escape the fact the OS itself has remained bang up to date. At most stages of its development it's supported pretty much [i]every[/i] mobile technology going at the time, including several that the Iphone didn't begin to approach last year and is only now about to address. You're boasting about new features such as the amazing ability to "add a bookmark icon to the homescreen", while WM has been supporting HSDPA since it was invented and Apple haven't gotten past EDGE yet.
I have a Tytn II, it sucks a little at video but it's still packed with useable, essential technologies that the Iphone can't touch. It came with WM6.0 installed, and has just had a free upgrade to 6.1, bringing with it a better browser, better overall performance, and threaded SMS (taking a tip from the Iphone there, although of course 3rd party threaded apps were available for WM since long before Apple released theirs). As a well established open platform, the functionality of my phone has long been extended well beyond anything that the Iphone is capable of, and the thing is, the interface is basically ok. It works. It doesn't look like a fancy-pants Iphone, but when I press buttons and doodle on the screen it does what I want it to do, reliably and quickly, and I'm still at a loss to see what exactly is wrong with that.

I never claimed the features I was listing were "amazing". I was simply asked what new features Apple had added and I was responding.
I read a good Wired article the other day. It said: "Customers are looking for something both simple and feature rich and Apple is in the best position because they already have the hardest part accomplished, the rest is easy". CB17 - both your and Wired's argument seems to be predicated on this myth that WM is "hard" or unpleasant to use. It's not. It's a perfectly practical and useable interface for the wide range of technologies incorporated by the platform. When the Iphone is loaded up to the gills with all the gadgetry it's currently missing, I'll be interested to see how the UI really compares - until then it's simply style without substance.
The funny thing about the Iphone is how much good it's done us "WM idiots". The Apple hype has had the effect of doing more for WM's profile and market share than Microsoft ever have, as manufacturers looking to compete with the Iphone deploy WM handsets, like HTC's "Touch" range and SE's Xperia attempt above. The future for WM is probably far brighter now than it was a year ago, so thanks Apple, and best of luck for next time.

I am a Windows Mobile user who also owns an Iphone - they both have there advantages some of which have been mentioned here.
The iphone UI is great and the screen is fantastic
The key thing about windows mobile though is the ability to adapt it to your needs with third party software. There is literally thousands of apps available and at least 100 really useful ones that make it a lot more useful in my view than the current iphone.

While I appreciate there is a cost to purchase these the addition of this software keeps me from giving up my WM phone and using my iphone full time.
However things are going to get interesting this year once new apps can be installed on the iphone - some of the above software is already being ported to the iphone and i will be watching closely to see if other developers release better iphone alternatives to my favourite mobile software.

I am one of those gadget fanboy that I have been through the days with Palm OS... Windows CE, all generation of Windows Mobile and now the iPhone... I will have to say, those WM user who so strongly criticize iPhone user should really take a step back and have another look. Also the iPhone fanboy, should also chill as WM user do have their point as well.
I understand that WM is a pretty good OS in terms of supporting 3rd party apps and in terms of full feature functionality... but it has a few very very major flaw... it is ugly, and not very user friendly to the average user. I understand that HTC has put out their own 3D Flo custom interface... so SE will put out their panel interface later this year... but this is still not good enough in today standard. 3D flo is good but if you ever need to do any setting changes, you are now back into the good old WM world that most new user will never understand (of course, if you have been using it for awhile, you will know where everything is). Also the fact that WM is very laggy, I have try out my friend HTC Touch and Touch Dual... WM are so slow that I feels like I am holding a phone with a 24mhz processor... instead of something more powerful... a lot of time, this is not due to the spec but due to WM is horrible in memory control and also being a very slow and not very responsive OS in general. Even processing command from the touch screen are slower on WM. That's not to say WM is not any good... it got a lot of the functions that iphone lacks...
iPhone has its good and bad point as well... Just the fact that it offers awesome interface that is easy to use is enough for many average users. However it does has it limitations, especially to power users... iphone lack some flexibility and basic functionality. Apple is trying to add 3rd party software support in firmware 2.0... although if you have been using a jailbreak iphone, like me, you will have already been enjoying 3rd party apps already... as for basic functionality, iphone is still missing a lot of very basic functions... like bluetooh files and sync support... bluetooth stereo A2DP support... lacking a basic file system... lacking basic copy and paste functions... lacking handwriting reconiztion... however, iphone advantage is the fast and responsive UI and a lot of users will rather accept that and give up a few functions in return for a much more responsive and user friendly device...
so as for the future... in order for WM to survive, there's a fundamental need for either Microsoft to improve its interface or for MS to allow device manufacture to fully customize the interface (even more so than 3D flo and panels)... if MW don't aim for that... their market will slowly shrink as other device eats into their current dominance.
as for iphone... it really needs to match the basic functionality that is being offer by the other phone in order for it to fully capture the market... if not, iphone will never get the penetration to the mass market...
as for other competitor... we will just have to wait and see...

i agree very much with peter.
as i never liked iphone for the same reason peter said mising alot of basic functionality but as i wante to buy a new phone i had to look carfully so i used a friend of mine iphone and it`s very user friendly and even if u never seen an apple sowftware u will get along with very fast i realy liked using it but still i i hated lots of other things like(no video capture-2 megapixels-no video call i think am not sure-no flash-free apps. [by the way am not that into computers but am not living in a cave either] ....some other functions)another friend friend is using HTC i tryied it`s really annoing to use but he had lots of functions which were not avilable in the iphone.
so it`s diffrent from one to a nother some breffear more functions other want a user frindly phone for me i want more functionality as i used to have a nokia phone S40 looks better but S60 with more capabillites.
