i-mate's "Sidekick for grown-ups" (our phrase, not theirs) is finally starting to ship, and Pocketnow's among the first to score an opportunity to put the beastly WinMo device through its paces. The
Ultimate 9502's spec sheet is certainly enough to impress -- triband HSUPA, TV out, 3 megapixel autofocus cam, VGA display the list goes on -- but is it as good in practice as it is on paper? In a word, yeah, it looks like it is, as long as you're willing to pay the astronomical prices the first batch of 9502s are commanding on the open market. It's super quick, has a gorgeous display, and is built like a tank, although that last point could also be the phone's downfall -- with a boxy black shell and one of the chubbiest profiles of any WinMo device out there today, the 9502 isn't about to win any beauty contests. The GPS was a little finicky to operate and the keyboard's quite a bit smaller than that of its arch nemesis, the
TyTN II, but otherwise, this looks like a winner for anyone who values extreme mobile productivity over making a fashion statement.
On a side note, we've learned from i-mate that the 8502 and 9502 are both affected by
Qualcomm's chip ban, so availability in the US is limited strictly to gray market imports (though they'll be officially offered in Canada). In other words, if you want to play, bring cash -- lots of it -- and don't expect the price to plummet any time soon.

Does it have video drivers? :p That'd make it the true TyTn II killer.
Jake H. @ May 19th 2008 5:11PM
that is an amazin phone. VIDEO OUTPUT?? incredible. that, the 3mp camera and it bein super duper fast is enough to win me over. except i have nextel.......

I bought one from Clove in the UK like almost a month ago. Took only 2 days to arrive here in Boston. I think I paid about $680 shipped. Not too bad considering all the features, and even comparing to the price of a Tytn 2.
Overall VERY good phone. I usually HATE the sliding keyboard form-factor like the Tytn series, and I must say the 9502 IS an exception.
The VGA screen is absolutely stunning. Finally a VGA windows mobile device with American 3G! YAY! Oh and it also DOES HSUPA! Didn't even know AT&T had that being deployed, my UPLOADS average 500kbps on this thing. Crazy.
Of course, it has the usual windows mobile slowness, but it switches from portrait to landscape mode very quick.
About the drivers, I haven't tested a lot of video on it, but I'm sure even though it has a Qualcomm Chip for processor, gps, etc, it is using a GoForce 5500. This was confirmed by the CEO of i-mate during an interview. It even has wide vga TV-out(cables included), which is pretty cool.
If anyone wants to know anything just ask here and I'll answer it.

Ohh, Nextel? My condolences.
n95 your phone @ May 19th 2008 6:18PM
nokia has had that feature for a while
no big deal...
derX @ May 19th 2008 6:09PM
Urgh, damn reply system.
-----
Anyway, while I'm bitchin' about the system, might as well ask how's its level of portability. I mean, it's apparently uncomfortable thick. Is it one of those phone you need a headset for?
*hopes this reply lands in jdoc's thread*
jdoc @ May 19th 2008 6:25PM
Portability is not an issue AT ALL. At least for me. First, the included leather case is pretty awesome, its the first time I was ever able to use one for more than a week. Second, its thinner than a tytn II, which is a top seller, and I don't see people bitching about its portability.
The only thing is that it's heavy because of all the metal used on the device, but for me thats a huge plus, it doesn't feel plasticky like the tytn. It feels very sturdy and expensive, definitely doesn't feel like a cheap toy.

How's the Bluetooth on it and the GPS, does the ATT Navigator work well on it?

I used to be fond about this phone, now all I see is:
- A WM phone with no overlaying UI e.g. HTC has TouchFLO3D, Xperia X1 has its panels...etc)
- A VERY thick and angular phone, in this day and age. (btw, it looks terrible when closed and held vertically)
Everyone seems to be 'fighting' the WM UI war, while i-mate seems oblivious of it.
It is a very decent phone, but no where near the Xperia X1, or the unannounced HTC Raphael.
derX @ May 19th 2008 6:13PM
I don't know, this phone seems to be pretty awesome. Personally, I don't need an already good OS to be prettied up. Hell, the overlaying UI just takes up space! Unless it adds to the functionality of the device--haven't played with the Xperia, but at least for the Touch--which the ones you mentioned do not, IMO, I don't need it.
But yes, I am a bit concerned about the thickness. Is it the amazingness of the Xperia? Nope. But is it awesome in its own right? I think so. It's exactly what imate says, "Sidekick for grown-ups"; I'd have a Sidekick, but it's too functionally anemic. This would do just fine.
Richard Lai @ May 20th 2008 2:04AM
There is a good reason to have the vanilla UI - regardless of whether it was intentional or not - with the obvious advantage on the system performance side as well as the user's familiarity with the UI. I'm guessing i-mate's phones are now purely business-oriented.
To get back to HTC's level, i-mate will have to work from the bottom again. The irony here is that i-mate's CEO Jim Morrison designed the first O2 xda (as he claimed in a vide which was on Engadget a little while back) which was manufactured by HTC.
PEZ @ May 19th 2008 6:36PM
They could have made a better keyboard than that.
MBN @ May 19th 2008 7:20PM
How big is this thing? Anyone have any side-by-side shots with a TyTn or another common WinMo phone?
Tiffany @ May 20th 2008 1:41PM
rtfa. there are plenty of side by side shots with other phones

i used to want this thing so badly. i was probably like its #1 fan. but now im actually kinda over it. why? i decided i like t9 better than qwerty. this phone is still awesome. and way better than a sidekick. but after having a regular flip for a few months ive gotten used to holding a phone with one hand and can now text using t9 without even looking. i cant text on a tiny qwerty without looking. so i think from this point forward its physical keypad phones for me. but no doubt im sure this phone is excellent for anyone wanting qwerty.
iJuleguy @ May 19th 2008 8:17PM
I wouldn't want to be caught eating crumpets on that keyboard.
NuShrike @ May 19th 2008 9:14PM
Silly iMate doesn't bother using the 7201 chip which is about exactly the same and isn't banned in the USA.
But then again, the Kaiser wasn't much of a iPhone killer so what is there for iMate to kill?
Atanas Boev @ May 20th 2008 3:20AM
kaiser killer - Isn't it how the first world war started?
