underestimating iphone 2.5g demand would be a serious strategic sales mistake, something apple doesn't do often.

I think this makes perfect sense. Apple is stopping iPhones from being sold before people can buy one and return it for the 3G iPhone. They don't want everyone complaining which makes perfect sense.

You can still buy them from the ATT site. Try ordering one for yourself and see. Stop with the rumors already. When it comes out I will buy one and give my old iphone to my wife.

No doubt that AT&T will have the last of them. They have way more to gain with the 2yr. contracts and all. Even if a release date has been set, AT&T will tell its people to sell the 2.5s up until the last one is gone, or the 3gs come out, whichever is sooner!

I'm inclined to think it's a mistake in sales expectations, but I would love to be pleasantly surprised.

Probably ran out because there is no production of the 1st gen going on to resupply. All the production is for the new 3G iphone, ramping up for release :)
Thats just a guess though :)

Dear Engadget Mobile,
Why are you fan boys why. There are many phones out there that are not iphones that do the same thing. Once a day you post something about the iphone. No one cares !!!!! Apple is a cult, if i want a phone that just works and does everything and iphone does and more i will stick with my blackbery curve "with gps", My n95 "that supports flash out of the box and also gps" or mabey a phone that lets me load programs on to that dont come from apple. Also my blackberry can be unlocked without out paying $100.00. I can also find free programs for it without haveing to pay for them or deal with the cult that is now as apple

I work for AT&T and we still have plenty at our store. And they're still selling as hot as ever. More iPhones are on the way. I wouldn't read too much in to this just yet.

I think this is definitely Apple hinting that the new model is coming out. They probably want not just customers on Apple.com but also the press to pick this up so as to give a warning about the new model.
Otherwise, as soon as iPhone 3G is released, they will have idiot people screaming from the rooftops that they "got screwed by Apple" for being dumb enough not to do ANY research whatsoever before purchasing and they end up stuck with the old model. Also, Apple most likely doesn't want to deal with hoards of customers returning their iPhone to get the new one within the 14-day return period after the sale.

you're foolish if you think there's no one interested in the iphone. i guarantee most of the clicks on engadgetmobile have to do with iphone-related topics. its quite obvious that the phone is just that popular, open your eyes and take a look at sales. besides, your crapberry may "be able to do" what the iphone does, but it sure as hell doesnt look anywhere as clean, sleek, or stunning as an iphone. the GUI is crap compared to an iphone's as well, there really is no denying that. one more thing, considering itunes is the most popular music-playing/buying/organizing program, your blackberry is seriously slacking in the syncs with itunes department
You might hate because you cant get an iphone or because you dont want to "jump on the bandwagon," but lets face it, its the nicest-looking, classiest, most functional, and easiest-to-use phone out there.
