Philips' new 'Xenium 800' touchscreen phone leaks out
If you had a creeping suspicion that the iPhone-esque phone market wasn't crowded enough yet -- you're right. Apparently, Philips is about to throw its hat in the ring with a device called the Xenium X800. The familiar looking unit will sport WiFi, a WQVGA "e2e" (or "edge to edge") touchscreen, and appears to be running a proprietary OS which looks considerably better than most phones in this class. Sure, it's heavily knocking off Sony's XMB and that new BlackBerry OS 4.6, but there are worse offenses that could be made. No word on more detailed specs, but you'll know more when we do. In the meantime, take a look at a few more pics after the break.

All these new touch screen phones look so alike, it's maddening. But they're still all so cool.
Wish I knew which one to buy.

Maybe proprietary OS, or cooperation with Samsung - those icons look awfully alot like Samsung's own design used on some (entry level) models...

Reminds me more of my LG Prada/KE850 than an iPhone tbh

Who HAVEN'T they ripped off with this design, especially their icons. I see Mac OSX, Symbian OS, and Palm.

ummm...doesn't look like there's a camera on board anywhere! checking the read link i didn't see a rear facing NOR front facing camera!! phillips can't be serious...can they??

Look at the screen... it says camera right on one of the icons.

YAWN!!
When will the three column icon menu GO AWAY? God I hate that type of navigation. I'd rather a plain text list, having to scan both up and down AND side to side while looking for an icon that might resemble what you think you're looking for just gives me a headache!
This set has NO colour to help you out, though most phones use TOO much colour which doesn't help either.
and why is the main focus always one row down? Menu's should start at the top left - far more logical, even though you think you're used to this crazy middle of the screen starting point simply because all phones copy it so blindly.
I doubt the iPhone is the best interface possible, but at least it is DIFFERENT - it feels less like columns and more like a list (in rows) and at least the buttons are different colours - and you can move them around.

any why don't posts that appear on both engadget and engadgemobile link to the same page? I hate posting comments here only to realise the main discussion is over on engadget - the main page and rss links should link to the same page no matter which feed.

I agree with you there!

Stop bitching about a phone that wont even make it into this country.
