Apple's iPhone coming to Latin America on America Movil
Just a day after we heard that Vodafone was taking the iPhone on a world tour, in comes word that Apple's darling will be headed to Latin America via America Movil. We aren't told if the deal is one of exclusive nature, nor were we given a specific launch date, but residents of 16 countries in Latin America will have their shot at latching onto an iPhone sometime "this year." Puerto Rico gets it through Claro, apparently. AT&T doesn't seem to think AT&T Puerto Rico is as important as it really is.

most likely puerto rico is out of the picture cause the iphone is already in there on att.

The iPhone is not here with AT&T. You can use it on AT&T, but it's as with any other GSM carrier with an unlocked iPhone.

here is the thing they said that america movel is going to bring iphone to central and south america right? america movel is affiliated with claro in puerto rico now that doesn't mean that iphone will come on claro.. cause it can come in att or don't sell at all in puerto rico.. who knows.. but all i know is that america movel is an affiliate of claro in puerto rico.

okay i just check the att website in puerto rico and it seems like that iphone is on att in there already so claro wont be caring the iphone there than... thats the end of that

The iPhone is not, I repeat, not available for sale in Puerto Rico. The website shows the phones available to buy in the USA, not all of those are available here (like the iPhone). You can get an iPhone to work without much problem but they cannot be bought off-the-shelves or at AT&T stores!

You are absolutly right, on the mark, but let me tell ya...I have not seen an Tv ad or even on the newspaper that the iphone is available down here...All I know was on June 29th til now there NO iphone being sold (legally) in Puerto Rico......apreciate the info though

Why are ppl being so excited? All the leftover iphones from US are being offered since iphone next version is going to come in US. It is like selling windows 95 when windows xp is available soon. I dont know about south america, but ppl in india , careless about iphone. They already have better version of Nokia available unlike ppl in US.

So I really dont understand why is the Iphone not available in Puerto Rico, part of the USA, plus At&T/cingular have been doing business for ages donw here...Is there any way we can find more information on this issue....Or apple has an racist policy towards Puerto Rico or they din't do their research!!!

Yes, I'm sure the entire population of India prefers a few Nokia models over the iphone. OR, could that be your own opinion and that of 2 of your friends?

I really would like to know what is Apple official stance on the issue. Why the Iphone is not being sold in Puerto Rico, having Cingular/AT&T for the longest time......Is there anyway engadget could contact them and ask them please.....

As At&t ppl told me, Apple doesn't sell iphone in Puerto Rico because they don't have yet an authorized dealer (for repairs) on the island and they don't want someone else to work with their phones...

write steve jobs about it steve@mac.com . altough im from PR i think at&t plans are a little overpriced compared to the plan i have with sprint right now. I have heard the rumor about America Movil (claro) is the one bringing the iphone here now after a year of being released in the US... discrimination????, i would like to really know the reason why Apple doesnt want to bring the Iphone to PR with AT&T. I like windows mobile phones mainly because i need activesync for exchange, but now that iphone will have it too i would like to try it, that and necause my HTC Mogul fells like a soap on my pocket.
