We're not exactly willing to sign up for even more punishment at the hands of Comcast, but all you masochists in the crowd should take note: GigaOm is reporting that the cable giant is "serious" about offering wireless services and has hired former Telefonica O2 Europe CTO Dave Williams to make it happen. It's not clear what type of wireless is being considered, but it's a good bet Sprint will be involved somehow: Comcast is still in that
goofy partnership with Sprint called Pivot that hasn't
gone anywhere, the two companies are rumored to be talking about a
nationwide WiMAX network, and GigaOm thinks there's a chance it could up and buy the struggling carrier outright. That would be quite a move, but it's all just speculation for now -- we'll let you know if we hear anything solid.

How do you make a wireless provider's service even worse?
Get a cable company to run it.

Actually, it looks like Comcast has pulled out of their partnership with Sprint.

According to Phonescoop.com, Comcast, along with the other cable providers, have just pulled out from their Joint Venture with Sprint, so your assumption about this having something to do with Sprint, may be wrong.

Comcast was once a large regional AMPS and TDMA provider in the Philly area that was known as Comcast-Metrophone. That ended up being swallowed up with the merger into Cingular

"With your powers combined, I am Captain Sprintcast!"
"Captain Sprintcast, he's no hero! Gonna take your service down to
zero!"
When your cable signal is out, your phone signal is out, and your
customer service is out(sourced), Sprintcast is there.

Maybe the cablecos are going to join forces and try to make another national provider?
