Flood gates open as Cubans given the green light to buy mobile phone service

We heard mention that the state controlled telco in Cuba, ETECSA, was about to finally begin offering cellular service to Cuban citizens, and that day has come. The rub, of course, is pricing, with activation ringing in at about $110 and the cheapest set, $75, average Joe earner's $20 monthly salary is going to be stretched thin. Of course, people like the orange couple (picture above, no relation to the other Orange) will always be willing to stretch the budget way out to get at the newest treats, and we completely understand that, but don't forget to save some change for food and matching outfits.

They don't know how good they had it. I can barely get anywhere without being stuck behind somebody trying to type or talking on the phone. Gas prices to high to blowing past people. They'll see though but at least they get the option now.

Now, I believe those prices are in CUC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_convertible_peso), which means it's a lot more than that in US$. I lived in Cuba the first 22 years of my life. At first, this sounds like a huge deal, but it is not much different from what we've had. Yes, Raul Castro is lifting a lot of life-long restrictions, but, although this allows Cubans to legally buy things like cell phones and computers, it doesn't change much in real life, since they are completely inaccessible by 99% of the population which makes a twentieth of what an 80' style tiny boombox sells for (north of 300 CUC). This is nothing but a political move.

Yeah, because that screenshot is an accurate view of the millions that live in Cuba. Google for a picture of Americans and you will likely get a picture of fat women walking down the street, is that what all Americans look like?
