Engadget gets a new look and adds Switched to the family!

Our latest addition, Switched will be dishing out features for those with a more casual interest in tech, as well as highlighting fresh, hand-picked tech news from our network of sister sites. So expect to see hot stories from Engadget classic, Mobile, HD, TUAW, and Download Squad running over there, as well as news from other geeky Weblogs, Inc. sites like Joystiq, Xbox 360 Fanboy, and Wii Fanboy.
As for Engadget's new design, we went through and really cleaned up the joint, yanking out old modules and ads wherever possible. You might spot our new and improved photo gallery browsing and updated looks on things like comments and polls, but it's hardest to miss the new rotating carousel over on the right. Keep an eye on that thing, it's where we'll be plugging in our biggest stories and must-see features.
Of course, launching eight sites at the same time is bound to cause a few problems, so please tap that first adopter attitude and bear with us as we squish bugs and tweak styles. And definitely hit us up in comments to let us know what you think (or if you see anything wonky)!
P.S. -Big ups to the gang that worked tirelessly to make this happen: Matt, Mark, Erik, Gavin, Celly, Alex, Christoph, Charlie, Marty, and the rest of the crew!

Awesome new look, Engadget! I'm really feelin it!
JAmerican @ Apr 10th 2008 6:15AM
I AGREE! GREAT LOOK!
Juice @ Apr 10th 2008 8:38AM
Yeah it's a better look but I see scroll bars at the bottom. I run 1024x768. You can't demand all users run in 1280. Eyeballs are eyeballs and will be til the end of time. Just because your monitor can do 6000x4000 doesn't mean you should do it.
Pete @ Apr 10th 2008 12:37PM
Yeah... nice new look... now if you could just make it so that the same article on both engadget mobile and engadget have the same comment thread
Nomi @ Apr 11th 2008 10:22PM
nice..........
AshR @ Apr 10th 2008 2:42AM
yeah I like the look, glad to see the magenta is still making an appearance for engadget mobile :)
JeffB @ Apr 10th 2008 2:50AM
oh phew! I was worried for a moment you were taking down the magenta on engadget mobile as part of the redesign - thankfully my fears were for nought. "over my dead website, t-mobile!" spiffy new look, keep up the good work :D
Johnson @ Apr 10th 2008 2:56AM
Looks good.. but I'm still having a hard time finding the sidekick..!?
Adam H @ Apr 10th 2008 2:57AM
I like how you guys made this site, Engadget Mobile, look MORE like T-Mobile =)!!!
The 'engadget' is placed nicely above the mobile part to look like the top of the T.
Well done!
Deasine @ Apr 10th 2008 3:11AM
I thought I was on the wrong website at first. Looking pretty good. New and fresh!
Matt @ Apr 10th 2008 3:12AM
I don't really understand why they went the pink, ehh excuse me, magenta in the first place. Not exactly a nice colour.
MajorXero @ Apr 10th 2008 3:41AM
Look back to March 31st and the letter T-Mobile sent the guys about use of the color magenta. Hehe. Stickin it to the krauts!
Matt @ Apr 10th 2008 4:02AM
Yeah yeah. I know T-Mobile got pissy about the colour, but DT gets pissy about a lot of things. I used to run a T-Mobile users website and a little C&D letter from them too. Didn't do them any good as I didn't change anything. If the pink is just to annoy T-Mobile, that joke was funny for about 20 mins and no longer is. A colour that is easier on the eyes would be nice. Either way, magenta was being used here long before T-Mobile got their panties in a wad.
Niels @ Apr 10th 2008 3:40AM
Can someone tell the guy who created the CSS, that the Helvetica font & Helvetica Neue font is a horror for Windows users? I bet this was made on a Mac...
Beretta1526 @ Apr 10th 2008 4:55PM
I am running dual monitors, and had to stretch the window to just about 2400px wide before the scroll bar went away, and if I bring the window to anything less than about 1440px, it comes back.
The font for most text is quite an irritation. I have to use "smaller" as a font size in IE and other browsers. When the page loads, it's almost entirely unreadable other than the headers.
Other than that, I like the changes.
.
slamEVIL @ Apr 10th 2008 7:24PM
yes, please change the font back to the orig! i was able to read it fine before on my mac and pc. now i can barely read it on my pc at work.
Laurent Redondo @ Apr 10th 2008 5:51AM
Can't wait for the French version ;)
PEZ @ Apr 10th 2008 6:38AM
I don't see the point of switched.
youngcalihottie @ Apr 10th 2008 7:22AM
lol ditto
Erik @ Apr 10th 2008 7:10AM
I almost missed the carousel thingie, apparently my eyes decided that something that moves that much HAS to be an ad and filtered it out... Too much time on the web! Apart from that, nice touch!
SES21 @ Apr 10th 2008 3:05PM
I'm just the opposite. My eyes can't ignore the thing & it's damn aggravating! I want a stop or pause or minimize button so it'll quite moving & being so distracting. I'd also like to see it moved down below the breaking, featured & other site's top 5s. Bottom line: I don't like it so at least make it less annoying.
youngcalihottie @ Apr 10th 2008 7:22AM
LOVE the magenta bar! and the positioning of engadget over mobile! lmao! just awesome!
craig @ Apr 10th 2008 7:33AM
More Magenta I say, take it all the way to T-Mobile. Look great anyway.
Juice @ Apr 10th 2008 8:41AM
Of course it was made on a Mac. Because "professionals" think that only good stuff comes from a Mac... :vB
Joe @ Apr 10th 2008 9:07AM
looks great, really digging it
Nazul @ Apr 10th 2008 9:17AM
Neat! Love it.
kb @ Apr 10th 2008 10:13AM
wtf... Whats up with the BLINDING white background and new font. I went to the eye doctor last month I dont need another eye exam already. You guys may want to change the background back to that old color and maybe use a bolder font or something. I have to go take something for this headache I have now.
Matt @ Apr 10th 2008 10:23AM
I dunno...
Every time I come to this site I still see it as "Engadget (i)Mobile." Something about that antenna, or whatever it's supposed to be, in front of the world 'Mobile' just looks like the letter 'I'. Was hoping you guys'd fix that at some point.
murray @ Apr 10th 2008 1:16PM
Me too.
PointBlank @ Apr 10th 2008 10:52AM
I hate this fuzzy font - stuck with a PC and Explorer at work - and the font selection is not pretty on this setup.
elgee02 @ Apr 10th 2008 12:21PM
Yeah this font looks horrible here on my work computer (but looks just fine at home). Other than that, I like the redesign.
murray @ Apr 10th 2008 1:18PM
I don't get the font complaints. What's wrong with it? I'm on XP here and it looks fine to me.
keithwwalker @ Apr 10th 2008 1:38PM
I am so confused!
Where do I pay my TMobile bill?
Where's Catherine Zeta Jones?
My brain hurts!
Iain @ Apr 10th 2008 2:47PM
A few issues/views which I figure are more likely to be noticed here than in the mass of comments over on the article on the main Engadget site:
1. the comment box is ridiculously small in comparison to the width of the articles and comments.
2. the last 5 stories lists on the other Engadget sites should be above the flashy but pointless slideshow and the breaking news and featured stories RSS feeds IMO.
I can find out what's 'breaking news' by just reading the site and I don't really care what's 'featured' or not - I'd rather be able to see easily what's being reported on the likes of EngadgetMobile or EngdgetHD.
Beyond that, I think it's ok.
No better than the previous design IMO but certainly no worse either.
AwlAmericanDawg @ Apr 10th 2008 4:01PM
Oh S*** I looked at the magenta part at the top (since that loaded first on my computer) and at first I thought I was on t-mobile.com, I was like WTF??!?!
brux2dc @ Apr 10th 2008 4:16PM
I love the layout, but it is too white! It hurst my eyes. How about a little more grey for the comments boxes to make them stand out more, and the light "engadget" blue text blends into the background white too much.
Let the abuse begin...
brux2dc
brux2dc @ Apr 10th 2008 4:17PM
"hurst"... Damn it. I mean "hurt".
wild homes @ Apr 10th 2008 5:29PM
Ryan,
Really enjoy the redesign-- congratulations are in order for your whole crew! I do second the aforementioned suggestion of having the comments sync to one shared thread for Engadget-family posts shared across the main site, HD, mobile, TUAW, etc... It would totally improve the whole community. Please consider it! And again, good work!
Joe @ Apr 10th 2008 6:08PM
Prior to I think yesterday, it would take forever to return from comments to back to main page. Now it happens in an instant. Way to go, Engad.
Corys00 @ Apr 10th 2008 6:18PM
Love the new look, it loads so much better now and I don't notice a huge lag like before!
Ewill @ Apr 10th 2008 7:17PM
search no longer has sort by date/relevance option
slamEVIL @ Apr 11th 2008 2:20PM
you're right!
@engadget: can you just make it automatically search by date? relevance is a given anyway.
Dave @ Apr 11th 2008 2:05AM
Everything's great--EXCEPT FOR THE FONTS!
!!! @ Apr 11th 2008 12:22PM
Are you making yr own daps? What is wrong with you, geeks?
/tongue so in cheek, it's stuck
bewareoverseassuckers @ Apr 11th 2008 5:18PM
Hey, moderator !!!
Phil Hodgen @ Apr 11th 2008 7:25PM
I think the color choices in the site design are especially good. Don't ever give up that unusual shade of pink, OK?
