Why are the other companies even bothering to put out touch-screen handsets if they've already got decent keyboard handsets? I constantly hear people saying that touch-screen input isn't even all that good, so why bother. Just have a slide out keyboard instead. Or don't bother to have so large a display. Not everyone wants to watch movies on a handset.
Other companies bother to put out touch screens because there is a demand for it. And also because most manufacturers have been building touch screen devices since long before Apple introduced the iPhone.
As far as producing simpler phones with smaller screens or slide out keypads, I think it is already being done. Just take a look at the overwhelming majority of phones available to users today. Smaller screens, standard and QWERTY keyboards, flips and slides are the norm. Touch screens just get the most press right now because it is a trend most of the industry is following.
