Chinese man builds fully functional 3-foot tall cellphone
Forget that "world's smallest" hokum -- how's about the world's largest? One particular Chinese man took on the challenge by constructing a fully functional cellphone some 620 times bigger than the handset that served as inspiration. The final result weighs in at 48-pounds, towers 3-feet up and has absolutely no qualms sending / receiving calls, text messages or browsing the internet. Unfortunately, the homegrown handset does require an AC outlet to function, and the real kicker is the omission of a vibrate function. Still, we bet the speakerphone is killer.[Via textually]

I consider one of the functions of a mobile phone to be mobility. And a vibrate function is a must, so that my ring tone doesn't irritate others in otherwise quiet places. That's two functions short of "fully functional."

What a complete waste of time - this guy should be helping design the next generation Palm OS...

You could also build a three foot tall, fully-functional hearing aid. But...why?
Kyle @ Apr 2nd 2008 4:32PM
I wish I could just slap every person who thinks "but can it play doom" is funny.
I would rather have 10 people flaming the post screaming FIRST!!!!!11!! than have one person and the retarded "but can it play doom!"

So this is the kind of phone researchers use to get their "cell phones cause's cancer" data.

HAHA Thank you!
Without it, where on earth would they get the data for their FUD campaigns. Why, they would just have to make it up!
Good thing I always wear my Aluminum Foil Deflector Beanie when placing calls...

Why does the thought of a vibrate option for this phone remind me of Howard Stern's movie "Private Parts"..??
codelicious @ Apr 2nd 2008 11:45PM
this is stupid... just buy a cellphone circuit board... welded on top of a big boulder, and here you go, a FULLY functional cellphone weighing... 3 tons...
seriously, i don't get it at all, why it's so big and heavy and requires an AC outlet? and cannot SMS?? it's not a cellphone anymore...

He should built an iPhone so he could surf the net, watch movies and play music. Instead he builds this crap, thats not worth the effort. Can you say dumbass!
