Sprint hits back with the Samsung Instinct
See that? That's the Samsung Instinct, due to hit Sprint in June. Better get used to it, because Sprint's about to start hyping it with the biggest marketing push in its history -- it's going to drop some $100M on this lil' guy. Of course, there's no escaping the comparison to a certain other touchscreen candybar phone, and Sprint's not backing down from a fight -- it's just being willfully obtuse, saying that while the Instinct wasn't developed in response to the iPhone, the company recognized that it needed "a product from a usability standpoint that can compete." Um, sure. Samsung and Sprint worked together to simplify the UI, which features a reconfigurable home screen, music, and TV features, but we're going to hold off judgment until we get a look at the browser in person a little later. One more shot after the break.

Is that the VZW Glyde (U940)?
ramona @ Apr 1st 2008 2:12PM
does it have a full qwery keyboard?
Chris @ Apr 1st 2008 2:19PM
It is not the glyde. The glyde has a qwerty keyboard.
The instinct is fully touch screen and will have a virtual qwerty keyboard. Check out CNET. They have pictures.

Thanks, very informative

anybody know if you will be able to get this phone with a sero plan? (if you can even upgrade phones at all on sero). i would love to upgrade my phone to this but im not giving up my sero plan.

Dropping $100M on marketing for a phone that is not worth even TRYING to build the hype that the iPhone received...brilliant move Sprint! Especially after marking down that $29 billion loss over the Nextel acquisition last quarter.
Hopefully Samsung picks up part of the tab. Or else there might not be a network for this "little guy" to run on in two years.
xB Owner @ Apr 1st 2008 4:58PM
That thing better be sporting a perfected Touchwiz UI. If not, their marketing department will be spending $100M on a flop. Regardless, no single phone is going to salvage the horrible Sprint network. Not even this phone on a SERO plan.
2fast4u @ Apr 1st 2008 5:36PM
This phone is going to bring Sprint out of the dumps! I bet you they are going to market it harder than Verizon marketed the successful LG Chocolate and Voyager. If a phone has a good marketing campaign in America thats all you need to succeed.
youngcalihottie @ Apr 1st 2008 9:16PM
the gui is pretty ugly but the article does say they worked to make it simple. im going to say that it will be very successful as far as sprint phones go. but ill also say the $100m is too much for this phone. they can spend $20b if they want, but it wont matter if the iphone2 really does come out this year. the rumor is enjoying much success, so i would say stick with whatever campaign was used for that and pass the advertising savings over to make this phone cost a little less than whatever they were originally thinking of charging. sprint needs to realize they are basically the discount carrier. people don't go to them for the great service or coverage -- its for the cheap sero & unlimited plans. no one is going to lay out $200 - $300 on this. and if sprints as crazy as i think they are, that's what theyre going to try to get for this. they need to figure out a way to offer it for $100 after contract and rebates, thats my 2 cents.
youngcalihottie @ Apr 1st 2008 9:16PM
ok ok maybe $150. but not $200.
Sam @ Apr 2nd 2008 1:53AM
If the phone is being offered for $200 or less (after rebates) I can see alot of poeple jumping on with the SERO plan.
Clint @ Apr 2nd 2008 5:33PM
NO, it does NOT have a "querty" keyboard. Those imbeciles put an "alphabetic" keyboard. Look at the photo on cnet. It's the most retarded thing I've seen in quite some time. It also doesn't do anything the Centro doesn't do, so this isn't going to help Sprint either, because the Centro is the fastest-selling smartphone ever and Sprint is still sliding down. I have a Treo 700p & Centro and very much prefer a physical keyboard, and the sweet price of the Centro.
nojok3 @ Apr 2nd 2008 8:34PM
The Voyager actually has a similar alphabetic keyboard. Difference? The Voyager actually has a qwerty keyboard hidden. I agree, I'm sticking with my Treo 755p.
Rook @ Apr 3rd 2008 10:14PM
Do you work for Sprint or Samsung? I didn't think so. I have seen the full specs on this phone and yes it does have a qwerty keyboard. And the pictures on cnet clearly show this.
Secondly the Centro doesn't have a fully integrated GPS that ties into the entire OS and its features.

Looks promising, although it seems Sprint is requiring a change of plan to the $100/month "everything" to buy one of these.

I've been a Nextel and Sprint customer for 6 years. Always on an unlimited plan. It was $99, when I started way back with them. I travel a lot and have no more issues with the Sprint network then any of my coworkers have with their ATT/VZW/TMO. They all are imperfect, but still beat pagers and pay-phones.
I have friends that are extremely pleased with Helio, as well (...just not the service. As for Sprint service... they are really stepping things UP! I've encountered a team approach - 2 people helping at the same time - an issue was resolved quickly and satisfactorily. The hold times were almost nonexistent.
Looks like they are making a real effort. (Time will tell)
I liken Sprint to the (Mythical) gas station selling gasoline for fifty cents less a gallon then their competitors. Would you not shop there, in the belief that your station was somehow better? I think it's in the consumers favor to support price competition, in all arenas. They are taking the lead, so far! If they improve their phone selection... it will get interesting!
Currently, waiting for the BB Curve. (But, open to innovation.)
christexaport @ Apr 23rd 2008 1:33AM
I don't know where in the world Rick travels, but Sprint service while working in offshore areas quickly exposes them. Always big blocks of dead space. They're decent in major metro areas, but suck outside them.
As far as the price analogy, they have high prices, credit requirements for approval, high deposits for contract, and high priced, inferior, old technology handsets. T-Mobile has no deposits, and supports the GSM standard, giving great choices in phones, since unlocked GSM handsets are abundant. People realize that a Razr was hot, but not for $50! Shame on Sprint! The world is seeing iconic mobiles like Nokia's N95, Apple's iPhone, and Samsung's Viewty. What is Sprint showing? Age, bad health, and hopeful doom.
christexaport @ Apr 23rd 2008 1:35AM
This is in response to the iPhone!? What about a response to the Nokia N95 and its future S60 Touch based brethren? Sprint is a joke... The iPhone is a phenomenon. This is a fiasco! No GSM, no open source apps, no reason to buy.
