BlackBerry Curve 8330 launching on Verizon in May
After seeing it kicked around the Net for a few months, it's good to see the BlackBerry Curve 8330 finally go live on Verizon Wireless. Well, almost -- you'll have to wait until May to lay thumb to QWERTY while riding that cool EV-DO wave of data. It'll cost you $270 after a $50 mail-in rebate and two-year contract with further discounts available when signing up for eligible voice and data plans. Your cash will be rewarded with the wee 4.2 x 2.4 x 0.6-inches / 4-ounces curve sporting a 320 x 240 pixel display, 2-megapixel camera, media player, stereo Bluetooth audio, microSD / SDHC expansion, and 260 minutes talk / 11 days standby. Unfortunately, it's missing WiFi like the early prototype and GPS like the rumored Sprint version coming in April.
Update: Sorry, scratch that. It does have GPS which Verizon touts as vzNavigator.

No WiFi AND no GPS? Dang you, Verizon! *shakes fist*
But then again, I'm on Sprint, so what do I care?

Speaking of which, when is the Spring version coming out? My AT&T plan is ending on April 18 and I'm itching to get the 8330 (instead of the Pearl 8130)

Wait is it VZ Nav or REAL internal GPS?
packetsniffer @ Mar 31st 2008 9:20AM
Doesn't look like real GPS.

my VZW contract is up in August was waiting for this phone...but no WiFi? T-Mobile Curve here I come....maybe 3g iPhone.
James @ Mar 31st 2008 1:42PM
From what I've read, it will also have a SIM card like the 8830 (which I own, and have used overseas).

Verizon has undoubtedly disabled the full standalone GPS that RIM included in this platform to force people to use their $10/mo solution "VZNavigator" instead of other software nav solutions. A side effect of this is that google maps and bb maps also are not allowed to use the GPS. I wish consumers understood this and would punish verizon for crippling their products.
They did the same thing to the 8830 and don't seem to care when customers complain that they quietly crippled the phone.

Yep - Verizon disabled application access to GPS on Blackberry 8130 "Pearl 2" as well.

the VZ navigator is the best. i don't know why anyone would want anything else.
HalfJoey @ Mar 31st 2008 6:39PM
Does the T-Mobile Version of the Curve allow people to use whatever GPS software they want without having to sign up for a GPS service? I have Verizon now and this GPS thing along with no wifi pisses me off. I've been waiting for a complete phone to come out for Verizon and it looks like I will never get it. My plan is up in July.

Best of luck with T-Mobile. Remember, they don't yet have a 3G network in America, so I hope you aren't planning on using that data device too quickly, but hey, at least you won't have to pay VZW for vznav, huh?

What? No WiFi!??! I was sooooo looking forward to upgrading to this phone. Oh well, looks like I'll have to wait the release of the BB9000. I'm not going to Sprint. None of my friends and family are on sprint. I'm better off with either VZW or AT&T to save minutes. So I'll switch to AT&T when the 9000 comes out. DAMN YOU VZW!!!
elgee02 @ Apr 2nd 2008 12:38PM
All this bitching about no WiFi, LOL. When you have EV-DO (with VZW's excellent EV-DO coverage) WiFi is pointless especially since it is NOT available everywhere and sometime you gotta pay to use it.
evengrift @ Apr 2nd 2008 10:36PM
Why oh WHY!? Why can't I have my camera and dual radios!? Must you hate me so?
You know if they liked me, they'd give me both radios, GPS AND WiFi..
Okay Okay, Sprints good enough I probably wouldn't bother with the WiFi, if you gave me rev.A.. But I want the world!
I look down at my 8830, and think maybe with the 9XX0..
B_an_angel @ Apr 10th 2008 12:16AM
if you don't like verizon, then leave! give then the etf and take your number else where...
Howie @ Apr 21st 2008 2:52PM
Just called Verizon customer service to look into pre-ordering. They know nothing about the release of this phone, which does not come as a surprise. Regardless, is this confirmed? Whats the source of this info?
AV @ May 9th 2008 11:37PM
Got the Curve today...very slick...disappointed about the wifi, but seriously, when would you ever really use it?
