Cheapo refurbished iPhones for sale online from AT&T
Remember those dirt-cheap refurbished iPhones we mentioned you could snag in-store? Well it looks like AT&T has decided to share the bounty with the public at large, and has begun taking orders for the $249 8GB models online. If you've been on the fence, here's your chance to get in for $150 less than retail (and sadly for you early adopters, a whopping $350 tumble in price). In our experience, you can grab one in person with no activation, though it looks like you'll have to sign on the dotted line to have it delivered.
Update: According to our commenters, you can get these mailed to you activation / contract free.

I just ordered one. No activation - (until you do) and all that. refurb for 250 as stated - free ship (2 day) Nice deal and I dont feel bad when the 3G one comes out in the summer (hint hint nudge nudge)... good deal.
codelicious @ Mar 18th 2008 11:52AM
it's truly a nice deal, i ordered one this morning.
i was waiting for their 3G model, but knowing the fact that the 3G model (coming out mid-2008) would probably cost around $599, this $249 beats it hands down. it even beats the iPod Touch hands down... so it's a very good deal :)

The website says " Plans for iPhone can be selected once you receive your shipment. Services: Services for iPhone can be selected once you receive your shipment." Does this mean that the phone needs to be activated by ATT and sign a contract before I can have it unlocked?
al @ Mar 18th 2008 1:53PM
when you activate after it comes, do you need to have specific plan (iphone plan) or i canj ust pop in current simc ard and good to go?
TJ @ Mar 18th 2008 12:20PM
Websites says 2 year contract and activation required even though they will ship it to you first
tristan @ Mar 18th 2008 12:22PM

If I buy this refurbished phone from AT&Ts website since it says that Plans for iPhone can be selected once you receive your shipment, do I have to sign a new contract with an iPhone specific plan with AT&T (I am currently on a family plan) or can I just somehow use it like a regular phone (with wifi) without signing anything new?
ronald.raygun @ Mar 18th 2008 12:42PM
So are we %100 we wont get a bill later from at&t showing a 2 yr contract cancellation fee?
Pocket DP @ Mar 18th 2008 1:04PM
what if you have to put a deposit
do you do that in store ?
Steve T @ Mar 18th 2008 1:27PM
2 things:
1) I was just at the AT&T sit and it says "Requires 2-year plan, ordered during activation process. Limit one per customer."
2) Anyone know what kind of warranty these refurbs have, and who administers the warranty program?
Jason Nuss @ Mar 18th 2008 2:47PM
I was wondering is this deal only online or can you get them in stores also. Cause i live in sf and i just called a store and the rep told me its only online.
Was wondering if anyone can help me out and let me know if this is true.
Thanks

justin @ Mar 19th 2008 8:30AM
there are no physical blemishes. i checked one out in the store and it was flawless and i couldn't tell the difference.
Oscar5453 @ Mar 18th 2008 8:08PM
Um.....the 8GB which is the only one available shows up at the price of $349 for me.....
How are you guys getting the 8GB model for $249?
derX @ Mar 18th 2008 8:35PM
Sure you're on the AT&T website and not the Apple website?
Adam @ Mar 18th 2008 11:40PM
I just ordered one. Now I can return my iPod touch 8gb to Costco, get the same features, bigger battery, and save $50. Even if you have no plans to sign up for AT&T service just use it as an iPod.
Justin Adams @ Mar 19th 2008 9:30AM
Its funny how the at&t one is cheaper than the one offered on the Apple website. I wonder why that is?
servoisgod @ Mar 19th 2008 12:00AM
Sorry, for a referb I better not have to pay $250!! $150, maybe.
umneycreep @ Mar 19th 2008 11:13AM
hmm... not seeing the refurbished iphones on at&t's website... all gone already?
Mike @ Mar 19th 2008 12:59PM

Yep, i'm not seeing the deal either. Must be sold out?
socalfrank @ Mar 20th 2008 11:09AM
I ordered mine when I saw the posting. I just got my email which states that the phones are on back order. I'm not so sure how you can back order a refub phone. Does that mean you have to wait until more people turn them in? Or is there a warehouse somewhere with a bunch of these that just needs to get to the shipping center?
Jay @ Mar 20th 2008 11:26AM
Same here. I called AT&T and they said that they're backordered -3000 and they have NO clue when they'll be back in stock and they can't tell you where in the pecking order you are. So essentially, we're shit out of luck.
I canceled my order. I'm pissed
Dmitry Goryunov @ Mar 20th 2008 4:12PM
Here is my story:
- Submitted order right after seeing news from engadget (3/18/08 9:05 AM PST)
- Received a message about a backorder today at night (Thu 3/20/08 2:49 AM PST) :-(
- Received a message about shipped order latter today (3/20/08 10:41 AM PST) :-)
Hoping...
socalfrank @ Mar 20th 2008 8:06PM
I think poor Jay may have been too rash. I just got my DHL tracking number and shipment confirmation too.
Codelicious @ Mar 21st 2008 10:21AM
I got mine last night!!! It's flawless and works with wifi out of the box.
I'm not going to activate it any time soon. Use it as a supersized iPod Touch! w00t!!!
grifter @ Mar 23rd 2008 8:12PM
Just got mine today. I ordered a second one 7 hours after the first and it got back-ordered for a day - I got notification that they are shipping that now as well (both came from a Cingular store in Dallas). I just unlocked my first with Ziphone. Works like a charm. I recommended it to a couple of friends yesterday but the ad was gone. Thanks, Engadget and Ziphone!
