Verizon's Samsung Glyde gets even clearer
We're thanking our lucky stars MobiTV didn't manage to shut down HowardForums on this particular day. Why? The best shots yet of Samsung's imminent U940 Glyde for Verizon have emerged over there, and we think a boatload of viewers are going to like what they see. The touchy, feely interface is pretty much what we'd expected to find, but perhaps most importantly, the visuals confirm that the U940 will in fact sport a true HTML browser, putting to rest fears brought about originally by some poor verbiage in the Glyde's draft manual provided to the FCC suggesting that it'd do no better than WAP. Who's getting excited about this one? Any jaded Voyager owners out there looking to sidegrade?

I was wondering if and when this would show up. Now it is just a waiting game for me to see who gets to market first... Verizon/Samsung with the Glyde, or AT&T/LG with the Vu. It is likely whoever gets their first will get my business for the next two years.
rokwell @ Mar 12th 2008 2:47PM
now, about that verizon htc touch.........
phillypharm @ Mar 12th 2008 4:39PM
this phone looks great, i got the voyager and would almost switch in an instant.. i'm not feeling the lack of a dedicated dpad, but once i get a chance to play with it and if i like... might have to ebay the voyager
elgee02 @ Mar 12th 2008 3:08PM
Played with this phone last week, it is sick! Less bulky than the Voyager and I think the UI on this one is a little sharper.
j_key_boy @ Mar 12th 2008 3:25PM
Oh you did? You lucky punk :) Can't wait to get it!
Nick @ Mar 22nd 2008 10:47PM

Not press but my job does entail a lot of contact with cell phone manufacturer venders, and sometimes they bring their new goodies before they even come out.
Niterider @ Mar 12th 2008 3:09PM
Mine!!!
Johnson @ Mar 12th 2008 3:15PM
Now if it only had wifi I would'nt give it a second guess.
elgee02 @ Mar 12th 2008 3:53PM
Wifi is pointless, this thing has solid EVDO coverage accross the country.
Sam Winter @ Mar 12th 2008 3:46PM
What? no wifi? ahh... This looks really nice. probably just keep the iPod touch/treo combo for now....
RC @ Mar 16th 2008 5:14PM
How is WiFi pointless? It's free and faster than EV.
elgee02 @ Mar 17th 2008 7:18PM
@ RC:
Because WiFi is less secure and MUCH less widely available than EV-DO, that's why.
RC @ Mar 26th 2008 3:00PM
Sorry you haven't gotten off WEP as your WiFi security...... It's only been known since like the time it came out that it's unsecure. WPA is much, much more secure than WEP.
Of course, you're a troll, so I could care less what you say.
Jake @ Mar 12th 2008 4:01PM
Holy crap, that thing is TINY. Pics show about 47mm wide and about 102mm long. That's crazy small. + HTML + QWERTY + sweet-looking UI = my next phone.
Jake @ Mar 12th 2008 4:07PM
Addendum: Crazy small for the feature-set. I realize there are smaller phones. ;-)
byaah @ Mar 12th 2008 4:49PM
I hope it comes out in the next month or so, I get to upgrade in April and I want to at least try it out before making a decision. Seems like it could turn out to be a nice phone.
Al @ Mar 12th 2008 7:01PM
To frosttoy. You know some people actually don't care to use/be locked down to itunes or want video support because they already have a dedicate device like an ipod video or a Cowon. Plus the fact that some people actually still like using a keyboard.
byaah @ Mar 12th 2008 7:03PM
Reply to the wrong comment, maybe?

Still. Not. an. iPhone.
kthanksbi!
Sean M. @ Mar 12th 2008 5:50PM
no. its. not. wow. your. quick.
elgee02 @ Mar 12th 2008 6:25PM
And thank God it's not an iPhone cause then it wouldn't have IM, MMS, or A2DP.
frostoy @ Mar 12th 2008 6:33PM
That's right! Thank god its not an iphone, cause it won't have multi-touch capability, widescreen movies, coverflow, album artwork, iTunes store on the phone (paying $2.99 per song with verizon is sooooo better than iTunes $0.99 for) SDK in june, software updates you can do side loaded on a computer, 16 gigs of memory built in, web clips, customizable UI, google maps, you tube, photos function, free web games, did I mention the Software Developer Kit in june...?
Yea... wouldn't want to have all of that now would we!!
Jake @ Mar 12th 2008 6:56PM
Crapper: not everybody wants a pocket monster, let alone one without a keyboard. Nor sh*tty AT&T service. For those folks, this is an excellent piece of kit.
So why can't you get a little objective perspective and recognize an excellent device when you see it, even if it doesn't have the Jobsian imprimatur? Surely you do not think that the iPhone is the zenith of phone technology that nothing shall ever surpass? Nor that the iPhone is the right phone for everyone? So what is your deal? You just like crapping?
elgee02 @ Mar 12th 2008 7:09PM
VCAST is 99 cents a song too, it's sad you have to make stuff about to make what your splooging over sound better. Glyde plays music and supports album artwork as well. Youtube? Yep. Half the price of an iPhone? Yep. 3G? Yep. Non crippled bluetooth? Yep. MMS? Yep. But go on, be proud of your overpriced toy.
frostoy @ Mar 12th 2008 7:22PM
who's splooging and crapping on now eh?
Last I was with VZW ringtones were $2.99 each (and yes, I left them for AT&T for the iPhone, and yes I crap on VZW because of their horrible customer service, up until now utter crap for phones, and YES I am an apple fanboy) So, cool, $.99 a song is good, but $9.99 for an album with 15-20 songs is better btw.
All this hate mongering started with my single comment: Still. Not. An. iPhone.
I didn't say the iPhone was the "jesus phone" some people think it is, yes it has its flaws (no flash yet, no 3G, MMS, IM, etc.)
But! when it comes to forward looking, the iPhone can be modified, updated and improved. Hell, its right now better than when it came out and will only get better with the release of the SDK.
And Yes, it will have flash soon, AIM has been confirmed and demo'd, and games too! 100,000 downloads of the SDK in only 4 days since beta release, you tell me there won't be improvements on this phone.
So, I leave this as my last comment:
Feature for feature, UI to UI, and future capabilities, the iPhone is the better phone for long term, IN MY OPINION. Everybody's entitled to their opinion.
Peace.
Scott @ Mar 12th 2008 10:17PM
Someone who dropped Verizon for a cool phone is talking about keeping a phone for the long term. You keep that Iphone for 5 years and see what condition it is in or wait till a new Iphone comes out more than likely next year (more than likely as they pump out new ipods constantly) and then drop the old one.
Paul @ Mar 12th 2008 8:28PM
You can have your 'jesus' phone, the Verizon 'GOD' phone is coming this Summer and will finish off what the Voyager didn't kill yet.
Al @ Mar 12th 2008 9:00PM
frosttoy. You know some people actually don't care to use/be locked down to itunes or want video support because they already have a dedicate device like an ipod video or a Cowon. Plus the fact that some people actually still like using a keyboard.
VaDivot @ Mar 13th 2008 10:01AM
No its not an Iphone and thank god its not because you will actually be able to make a phone call on this phone. My girlfriend has the Iphone and I will admit I like playing around with it sometimes (although no 3G is a killer that every Iphone fanboy wants to conveniently forget about). One thing never fails though, whenever we got out somewhere and she needs to make a phone call, half the time she has to ask to use my phone because no matter how nice you think the Iphone is its still has shitty AT&T service. I just laugh and hand her my Verizon phone. And thats the one reason that I wont leave Verizon, when I have to make a phone call, I CAN!!!
ThatGuy @ Mar 15th 2008 9:12AM
What if both the iPhone and other Verizon phones just want to get along??
PEZ @ Mar 12th 2008 5:20PM
Proprietary OS? PuPu.

This and the Voyager are like Verizons best phones
I think I mite just buy both!!! :-)

Sweet! Too back I have Sprint.
canonmac kid @ Mar 12th 2008 6:34PM
let the iphone comparisons begin!
i cant wait til this phone comes out. my cousin has been eligible for a while and i keep telling him to wait til this phone comes out... bahhhh.
this phone will definitely be a nice addition to my ipod touch
Al @ Mar 12th 2008 7:02PM
It is a shame it does not have wifi for the times you don't have evdo or don't want to pay for the service.
Pamela @ Mar 12th 2008 7:08PM
Now if only Verizon wasn't greedy for their $15 a month and allowed people who don't have the Nationwide plans to have this phone. If you want to keep your grandfathered plan hold out for the non full html LG VX-9100 coming later this year.
elgee02 @ Mar 12th 2008 7:39PM
This phone does require any $15 package of any sort, and the nationwide plans are THE SAME EXACT PRICE as the old America's Choice plans.
dare instructor @ Mar 13th 2008 9:17AM
To be fair elgee, for some people the minutes-of-use web is so much better. I'm on the $5 / 200-minute employee plan and Mobile Web is all I use my minutes for (I still have an enV while I wait for this.) When I get this phone I have to switch to a $15/month plan because of Nationwide, and that's NOT including VCast. On a full html browser while the $15 for VCast isn't required, it's pretty much necessary to do any decent web browsing.
Pamela @ Mar 13th 2008 12:34PM
Exactly, Dare Instructor. If you buy this phone or the Voyager you most likely will be using the web browser and will download things from the web or GIN, so the $15 is really a must have that's been forced with the Nationwide plan.
eharris102 @ Mar 18th 2008 9:54PM
I recently switched to a Nationwide plan and it didn't cost me a thing. If you call customer service and and ask about loyalty plans, they may be helpful. They will play coy about a loyalty nationwide plan and will tell you it can't be done, but ask to talk to marketing.
bk @ Mar 12th 2008 7:47PM
Just an FYI if you download a song off of VZW handset its 1.99 because you get 2 copies 1 for your handset and then another one you can download from your computer. So if you did the math your paying the same price as iTunes if you were to do the same thing.
Paul @ Mar 12th 2008 8:28PM
Nice phone but no TV.
Noah Kravitz @ Mar 12th 2008 8:53PM
There's a rumor I'm hearing about a March 28 Launch. That would get it out in time for a big media push at CTIA (starts April 1).
BDubb @ Mar 13th 2008 1:09AM
Frostoy,
The VCAST music downloads have never been $2.99. I have had it since day one, and I also have internal documents. It's $1.99 for 2 copies, and .99 for over-the-air downloads straight to the phone...oh, and you don't have to be in a wifi area to do that, unlike another phone that I know. The Iphone has very good points about it, but just remember, unlike the Voyager and Samsung Glide, it doesn't do mms, stereo bluetooth, 3G tethering, built-in Voice Activated GPS, even if it's only using VZ Navigator, and you can get insurance on it, again unlike the "other phone". Also, the Voyager include MediaFLo TV, just like ATT's LG Vu will have, that again, the other phone will have. I say all of this to say, yes your Iphone is a very good device, but it is also lacking a lot of things that should be included with a so-called high-end phone, that Verizon's touchscreen phones have.
dare instructor @ Mar 13th 2008 9:18AM
You got them a little switched up. It's $.99 / song or $9.99 / album to buy music on your computer, or $1.99 / song to buy music straight to the phone with the ability to download to your computer later on.
Sin City @ Mar 13th 2008 9:34AM
If anyone knows the specs, do you think this phone will find its way over to Sprint? I've was following it for about 1 1/2 years now, just to find out it will not be a Sprint phone =(
Mark @ Mar 13th 2008 1:03PM
its just like a voyager, but with a slide out QWERTY instead of a clamshell. what i like about the Voyager better.....an internal non-touchscreen phone....sometimes things are too difficult to do on the external touch screen of my Voyager, but with a simple flip, i have the inside screen to navigate with.
