Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 delayed until next year? We think (hope) not
A table of release dates dug up on Sony Ericsson's own site suggests something powerfully depressing, which is that the XPERIA X1 has been pushed all the way out to February 10, 2009 (notice that the date is in European format -- we'd just give up now if it were actually October 2, 2009). While the presence of the page on the company's very own domain is pretty damning evidence, we're still holding out hope that it's a typo or an oversight; late Q2 of '08 was mentioned at MWC, and we really don't see how it's possible to push out a phone nearly three-quarters of a year just weeks after its initial announcement. Please tell us we're right on this one, Sony Ericsson. Please.

Hopefully the 3G iPhone will be out prior to that (or about the same time).
I was gonna shoot for the X1 over the iPhone if it were released first...but now..

Feb 2009? Wouldn't WM 6.1 phones be obsolete by then?
Worst news ever. I'll have to opt for either the HP Oak or the mystery Dell Android phone for my Q2 2008 phone update....
Very bad move.... Wwith Nvidia's APX 2500 processor out, I don't think the XPERIA X1 will be that impressive in a YEAR of time.
This was all too-good-to-be-true for SE. They had to screw up the XI at some point.

Jesus. Pushing out that hardware in 2009 will make the phone nothing special, as pretty much every WinMo phone by then will have VGA, HSUPA, etc. Hell, HSDPA, GPS, and Wi-Fi have already basically become standard stuff on smartphones. Here's to hoping that's a typo. The specs would be common-place by Feb 2009 and would make this phone nothing but a WinMo Sidekick.
This also bothers me as a T-Mobile user, for the reason that this is the ONLY UMTS1700-capable phone announced that is not useless.

Or it could just be a placeholder for "we don't know when, so we'll set it far into the future so the site doesn't show it as live"

HTC (both WM and Android), nokia, moto will bring out 1700 supported unlocked phone before then
I heard the Asia release will be Summer season
by the table above, it has 4 years sales
it's obiviously false!

Wow! Apple is going to be at least 2 years ahead of the competition by the time Sony, Nokia or Rim land a touch screen. Makes me wonder if Apple never created the Iphone how long it would have taken these guys before they decided to get off there butts and be innovative.
Stasguy @ Mar 2nd 2008 6:31PM
Sony ericsson already has many touchscreen phones, the p-series has been around for a while now, and there has been a walkman touch screen phone, and then there is the new g-series that just came out, so nokia has been behind SE in this regard for a long time now.
Mcrae79 @ Mar 2nd 2008 6:40PM
Ya but who really counts Palm and Sony wannabe palm touch screens that are as dated as windows 3.1, thats why im not including Samsung or LG because adding touch to a standard phone is still prehistoric compared to the Iphone and these 2009 maybe 2010 interfaces with how slow to the trigger these so called innovative companies are!
trooth @ Mar 4th 2008 3:23PM
Are you blind? Touch screen device have been out for a long time. You may have heard of Windows Mobile, or Pocket PC 2002, 2003 etc. Apple is not the first with a touch screen phone, they just put their o/s and gui on a touch screen phone. Apple fanaticism has blinded you.
cmajewski @ Mar 2nd 2008 6:38PM
Tack on another 3 quarters for your favorite cell provider to carry the phone...add yet another year on top of that if it's Verizon...
Alex @ Mar 2nd 2008 10:38PM
Shouldn't really matter. The X1 unlocked would already be quad-band GSM/EDGE and quad-band UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA. One would just need to purchase the UMTS 850/1700/1900/2100 model in the U.S. and the UMTS 900/1700/1900/2100 model in Europe. Obviously, you wouldn't get subsidies without the contract, but hell, with a phone like this, it would be worth it (assuming it came out THIS year that is) to buy it unlocked.

Yes, and if the iPhone starts becoming more business friendly soon, with exchange capability that is rumored, and then a 3G phone this year, and so on, and so on, Apple will be way way ahead at that point in the smartphones. Well, sorry, but it serves these other companies right for sitting on their butts for about 7-10 years and releasing virtually the same stuff over and over.

iphone's lack of third party support. Official third party support won't magically turn their next iphone into a dream phone. It will always have a class of its own among the other big dogs of the PDA phone market.

Unless it came directly from someone's mouth at MWC, I'm not sure where this "Late Q2, of 2008" release is coming from.
S.E's official line on this phone has always been that it would be released in the second half of 2008 (see here: http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/corporate/press/pressreleases/pressreleasedetails/globalx1-20080210 )
To me that means anytime from July through until December this year. They've left themselves a fairly big window there.
While it would be truly disappointing if the X1's release date was indeed delayed until Feb '09, it's hardly 3/4 of a year if their official release window ends in December, is it?
Let's just hope S.E. have got themselves together on this one and release it on time, rather than us having another P990 on our hands...

@cmajewski
SonyEricsson make GSM phones. No matter how long you wait, they won't work on Verizon.
Anthony @ Mar 3rd 2008 7:55AM
This is disgusting. The x1 is obsolete by then. They need to release this phone by the end of the summer or it's trash.
SAD :(

I amend my earlier comments.

Better be released before the second half of 2008... Or it wouldn't be worth releasing after all...
