Samsung's i550 re-upped with WiFi
Whoa, what's that little symbol we spy in the upper right? Aye, indeed, it's the unmistakable marque of speedy wireless! Sure, Samsung's S60-powered i550 already had HSDPA, but as any N95 owner will tell you, there's just no substitute for an 802.11 radio every once in a while. Samsung must feel the same way, because they've now apparently re-released the i550 as the i550w, where the "w" stands for -- you guessed it -- WiFi. A quick search reveals that the revised model is already in the retail chain and can be had for under $400, so just be sure you're getting that precious extra letter tacked onto the end of the model name if you place an order.

anyone seen samsung s60's in the wild?
they've had a bunch of models but seem to market them only in very spesific regions if at all..
janole @ Feb 28th 2008 5:36AM
Yes, I've had the chance to play around with the i550 and one other S60 v3 FP1 handset from Samsung.
Two days ago in a local shop from a large German electronics chain (Media Markt).
I was quite surprised to see those phones. By the way, I didn't like the displays of both phones. A bit dark and flat colors ...

I still like this but I thought from the first pic that it would be a slider its nice for a candybar but candybars are lame give me S60 with either blackjack or i730 form factor

hey dudes, i'm from malaysia(south east asia) and got this gps enabled , wifi enabled , trackball, HSPDA enabled phone . with 1GB memory card(supports up to 4GB) for the price RM1400 (USD436.8175). pretty impressive phone, wifi works fine , web browser pointer is navigated easier with the trackball. GPS software NAVFONE is included , however . enabling GPS DRAINS your battery like never before , enable gps for 2hours+ and it will deduct 2 power bar , so be ready with an backup battery if ur navigating in a car or get a samsung car charger .
oh ya, i will post up some simple steps for newbie Malaysia GPS user for samsung i550w
lim yin cheng @ Mar 2nd 2008 8:22PM
How to activate NAVFONE (gps software) for Malaysia SGH i550 user
-after purchasing the original SGH i550 , it should come with a blue colour card with a licence key .
-scratch the layer to obtain the licence key.
-on your phone and go to installations in your menu.
-there should be a software name NAVfone(if dont have , check your memory card for the .sisx installation file and install it, then continue)
-after selecting NAVfone , it will promt you for registration, Key in exactly your licence key and it promp u to send an sms.
-note that the sms will be send to Singapore +65 not malaysia +60 .
-it will reply you some weird code ( i think is the approved licence key)
-go to NAVfone again and it should be activated automatically.
how to use NAVfone Gps
-1st of all, go to an open area , or inside a car.
-press on the GPS data button on the right of the trackball
-it will say searching for gps sattellite and calculating GPS data
-u should be patient and wait for probably 5 mins ,YES , its 5 mins . just wait for it to connect , and your latitude and altitude will be displayed at the position tab.
-next, go to NAVfone from menu, you should go to woodlands.(if no , it means u have not installed the map, go to ur memory card and install it )
-from option , press search and key in your destination name. eg- subang jaya carrefour.
-then go to navigate , select destination and it should prompt u "connect to gps?"
- Yes, your arrow should turn from grey to red now and you will see where are you in the map .
- Enjoy driving! or walking , or cycling , or skateboarding

Lim, where do you bought that phone with just RM1450??
I live in Klang.. Where can I get it?
Thank you.
Mie @ Mar 4th 2008 11:09AM
Lim, one more thing..
How do I make sure that I will get that blue registration card?
Is it supplied inside the box or is it inside the CD package?
lim yin cheng @ Mar 7th 2008 10:54AM
>edward , okay, i will send it to you .
>Mie , i'm from klang too , teluk pulai bah kut teh area , i purchased this phone at one utama damansara. but i heard the old jaya jusco in klang have the official samsung centre also . check it out there. about the blue navfone license card , the sales promoter should have shown it to you on your purchase , or just simply ask them about the GPS navigator software and its detail. if no blue navfone card provided , u might just nearly been coned. Btw, it doesnt comes in the box , i think it is external contract with SAMSUNG one , because the sales promoter took out the card for me from somewhere else.

More review on i550 GPS :
I would like to correct my previous statement of "enable gps for 2hours+ and it will deduct 2 power bar" . The GPS drains battery faster than i thought . i uses GPS today with 2 battery bar left . i only manage to go for less than 30 minutes of usage before it says that my battery is low . but guys and girls , it is quite similar compared to an overpriced N95 , the discussion of battery life for the N95 is one of the larger ones on the internet, google for it and many results will come out. my solution: use mobile charger lor.

More review on i550 wifi:
i550 wifi is similar with nokia phones wifi . u have to go connection to define your access point. then u are all ready to go online with the web button . however , the only problem i have is setting the access point , i travel between home and college area daily . they are different wifi provider for each 50 meters i walked. its bit
tedious the steps , setting the access point , setting WEP and select access point, proxy etc etc . makes me feel lazy to set up the connection . the battery drain was acceptable. i enjoy using windows live or ebuddy mobile at home , can msn when i'm lying on the bed hehe

hi Lim yin cheng ,
newbies to GPS , can u show me how to get a map inside the phone ??? do i need to pay for the map ?? or can download from anywhere ??
appreciate your prompt answer .
stupidmonkey @ May 19th 2008 6:37PM
Tiny buttons are a terrible thing to put on a phone. If they can fix that keypad, it would be a great replacement for those overly priced N-series from Nokia.
