Sprint talks up "Push-to-X," chimes in on future features
Though Direct Connect remains the overwhelming favorite among US carriers for push-to-talk service, Sprint is reminding folks that its capabilities go far beyond talking alone. Fresh PR details some of Sprint's current "push-to-X" services, including push-to-email, push-to-picture (can picture really be used as a verb?), and push-to-send contact info, but thanks in part to a fresh commitment to iDEN, that's just the beginning. Sprint's also revealing a little detail about some of the things will be able to push to do in the future -- push-to-text, push-to-locate, and push-to-information are specifically mentioned -- as new (and unspecified) Direct Connect models supporting broadband data get rolled out. Samsung, LG, what say you?[Via phoneArena]

Though Sprint is coming out with all these features for IDEN, isn't this service being shut down in the near future??...Or, are these features part of the new implementation of Q-chat. New features are great, but if these phones are not forward compatible with the new technology then sprint is in trouble.

"Push to picture"?? Maybe they should just consider true MMS on their PDA phones first (minus Palm).

I hope that you all realize that Sprint is doing anything it can to "fix" themselves. If they can make this new Q Chat system work I think that there will be a much brighter future for Sprint. Nextel had all the push to X services a couple years before the merger as I used it to send my contact info to clients all the time. Hesse may just be doing the right thing by fixing a system that was a huge cash cow for many years and all of a sudden was dropped. They didnt put a dime into the network for far to long and now maybe this will be their saving grace.

Picture this... I am using picture as a verb, although maybe not as Sprint had intended.

I was thinking the exact same thing...Picture this: an Engadget writer that has any semblance of a real journalist.

They forgot to mention "push-to-bad customer service" and the ever popular "push-to-drop call"

Sprint has recommitted to the push to talk system, and is already testing Qchat in Denver. Setup times are equal or better to iden, with superior data capacity and a phone UI that fits in this side of 2000. As for the iDen network, Sprint has been pouring money into it since the merger, and has it running at best ever levels of call block/drop and will be around "through 2010-2011 at least."
