Palm Centro for AT&T unboxing and hands-on
Well, you knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. We've gotten our mitts on Palm's latest entry to the AT&T lineup -- a white, gray, and neon-green unicorn known as the Centro. We can't say we're surprised about anything that happened when we opened it up and turned it on, as this model is pretty much identical to the Sprint version we manhandled a few months ago (save for that pesky difference in networks). Of course, the proof is in the Garnet-flavored pudding, and we're not seeing any big differences there, except that this model is sporting the Treo 680 phone tabbed phone interface. Check out the gallery below and experience the thrilling "you are there" feeling of getting a brand-spanking-new phone.

I love my Centro, and 300kb/sec with Sprint Network.

Ah, Garnet OS. No thanks. I like my mobile device to have at least a mild revision every DECADE or so.
The last stable PalmOS device I bought that didn't have modern network functions tacked on as though an afterthought or require major patching and hacks (and $$$) to get it to work right was the IIIc.

No back lit photo? Show me those green buttons lit up!

Is it just me or is the center button "palm" button a little crooked? It looks high on the left and low on the right. Quality control issues? The handset looks pretty chunky too.

This is it, Palm. I demand to know who approved this design!

Which XM channels does it have?
storino03 @ Feb 20th 2008 1:14PM
the free low-quality channels are always included. You need an actual subscription to get CD-quality and more premium channels.
Also, why is this article both on Engadget and Engadget Mobile. Kind of makes "Mobile" obsolete if it's going to be in both places.

About half the Engadget Mobile articles are also on Engadget. It's always been like that.
Darkest Daze @ Feb 20th 2008 4:57PM
Always made me wonder why they don't just link the article to the Mobile website to increase traffic over there. Everyone visits Engadget, but most people don't bother with the sub-channels. By linking to that site, they'll probably bring more people over and get higher traffic on both.
robinsmad @ Feb 20th 2008 6:28PM
Yeah, I never understood why they didn't make the stories share comments. The main site always gets more discussion, and I would just read the cellphone category there if Mobile didn't get more stories.
maveric101 @ Feb 20th 2008 9:39PM
@ Darkest Daze - they do. the "read" link goes to the full Mobile article.

I love that feeling of unboxing a new cell phone. Unfortunately, my iPhone didn't give me that same feeling.
ahecht @ Feb 20th 2008 4:10PM
Green buttons? Are they kidding?
Wifiguy @ Feb 20th 2008 2:45PM
Can someone tell why this thing didn't come with wifi?
robinsmad @ Feb 20th 2008 7:34PM
Palm OS 5 can only support two radios, so they've chosen EDGE/EV-DO and Bluetooth. The new WM Palm (800w) and phones using the new OS will have WiFi.
appsbyaaron @ Feb 20th 2008 2:28PM
Does this allow the installation of any Palm software?
It's no Google Phone but oh well. ;)

mikeed8986 @ Feb 20th 2008 4:46PM

ErikEngd @ Feb 20th 2008 7:54PM
I had the same thinking. It looks like a cheap toy from Toys R Us.
Gib @ Feb 20th 2008 9:38PM
haha totally!
servaas @ Feb 21st 2008 3:33AM
This phone is not going to be the one that saves Palm, I guess...And why did Palm hire Kermit as lead designer again?
