Sony Ericsson's X1 running some fancy new version of Windows Mobile?
If you thought the X1's crazy panel interface was just a little too crazy for Windows Mobile 6, well, there might just be some truth to that. Mobile-review is reporting that the X1 will be among several late-2008 devices arriving with some post-6.0, pre-7.0 version of Windows Mobile that features a number of yet-to-be-disclosed goodies, which is why Sony Ericsson's generally been pretty stingy with the hands-on time at Mobile World Congress this week. We're not sure if this is simply another way of saying 6.1 or yet another interim build to hold us all over until the platform gets thoroughly revamped, but honestly, right now we're just kinda looking forward to sliding that beautiful keyboard open and closed a few times more than anything else.

Must. Have. That. Phone! I am definately going to switch to any carrier that has that phone.
Nathan @ Feb 13th 2008 4:08PM
I was waiting until my contract was up with Verizon in May to switch over to the Tilt on AT&T, but the HTC driver debauchel gave me pause. Now that this is coming down the pipes I see no reason to go for the tilt, even if they do fix the driver issues.
My only hope is that when WinMo 7 comes through the tubes, it will be a free upgrade for this phone, unless its like a year between phone and OS release.

Who knows if any carrier in the USA will have it. The only one (of the main 4) capable of it is AT&T since they are the only ones with UMTS, but T-Mobile will supposedly get it this summer. Verizon and Sprint have no chance of getting this!
Ed Hardy @ Feb 13th 2008 4:13PM
Yeah, it's almost certainly running Windows Mobile 6.1, which Microsoft isn't ready to announce yet, even though it has been leaked all over the Web.
The new HTC Advantage X7510 will also run WM 6.1.

i want this phone so bad! i think i should be done with one of my contracts by the time this comes out. this just shows that windows is definitely the way to go...such freedom and creativity! (and power)
Stasguy @ Feb 13th 2008 4:59PM
Regardless of the OS I'm getting this phone!
Michael S @ Feb 14th 2008 12:30AM
You'd get this phone if it was Palm based?
Donald @ Feb 13th 2008 10:16PM
It's running HSDPA, it can't be Palm.
Brian @ Feb 13th 2008 6:50PM
Wow. Sexay. Almost sexy enough for me to buy sans contract. I wonder what chipset it runs?
mikeed8986 @ Feb 13th 2008 7:38PM
yall don't commit yourself just yet, it's rumored that SE's saving two more handsets running on their UIQ platform code-named "Bei-Bei" and "Paris"! i SE choices. =D
PEZ @ Feb 13th 2008 9:28PM
I hope this pig gets showcased at Sony Style stores before its release.. I want to touch it.

I am running Windows Mobile 6.1 on my Hermes and Titan phone. Its nothing different from Windows Mobile 6 except for built in threaded sms, exchange enhancements, email enhancements, and memory management. Seeing from the video's on sony web the interface is so quick, it makes me wonder if its Windows Mobile 7 with a new arm 1ghz proc. Who knows. We will have to wait and see.

Don't count on it. Anybody notice the close talks between Nokia and Microsoft, especially around the release of WinMo 6 and how everyone blew it off as mostly a cosmetic upgrade. Then the threat of new open systems such as Android, Linux Mobile, OS X mobile, and Symbian(regular and (UIQ). Notice the efficiency of both versions of Symbian. One of the things Microsoft has been dying be able to achieve. Also, any wonder why this new OS has been taken on by SE, which owns its' own OS. Then Motorola all of a sudden takes a nose dive back into UIQ earlier. The smutty truth shall be told later. Can't beat the big kid on the block. Take him to lunch and make him give up the secrets for some sweets. I mean look how well Symbian syncs with Windows. A little shoulder rubbing maybe for both to keep their dignity and stay at the top of the game.
Stasguy @ Feb 15th 2008 12:07PM
it has about 500 mhz, but its possible that it could be running some newer/better OS
Churma @ Feb 15th 2008 10:01PM
@ Cingulair well last time I used Symbian it was a pyle of garbage. This was on a sony p800. We will have to see what happens in the launch of the device.
MobileMan @ Feb 15th 2008 7:20AM
You can buy the same one from other chaper brands, like AMOI who do WM 6.0 phone. Any guess how much $ MS spent on PR for this?

Verizon's a very likely candidate to get Sony Ericsson's Xperia X1. Verizon and Vodaphone have joined into a partnership for a G4 network upgrade to be tested in 2008 (as reported by Engadget last year). The new GSM based LTE UMTS data protocol will allow the Sony Ericsson X1 phone to zing over the airwaves. Verizon's EV-DO (CDMA) network is showing it's age, when stacked up against HSDPA/HSUPA. Verizon realizes it needs to upgrade their network, or lose customers to it's competition. Of course this upgrade will also allow Verizon to use the iPhone on their network as well.

To HELL in a Hand Basket with the Sony Ericson Xperia X1. I said i would never buy another wrethced thing from HTC. That includes the X1 as it was manufactured and designed by HTC Hi Tech Computer Corporation. Which happens to be the manufacturer and designer of the HTC TyTN II which is missing video drivers. Screw HTC. Screw Qualcomm. Screw ATI. Screw Sony Ericson.
