Hands-on with iriver's 3-inch touchscreen phone

Nice going iriver, now this is something we can sink our teeth into, though like the last time we saw this, the UI has a look and feel we recognize, but can't quite place. The rear of the unit is labeled W7, though we're not sure if they share the same guts or just the case. Nothing much new to report, specs are the same as we saw last time, though we did get a chance to drop the rivermobile -- we totally made that name up on the spot, sorry -- into its GPS housing, see some shots in the gallery. Iriver is still confident it'll ship by end of year, we certainly look forward to checking it out when it does.

Is there such a thing as too stark or simple? For some reason it looks very star treky to me (recessed screen, joystick) - like it's supposed to be from the future, but then it looks old too. Reminds me of a Handspring.

Funky looking. And I love the N95 comparisons.

Is that housing made of cast iron? I sure looks like it is and it might withstand a direct hit from a .22 ;)

If this has actual phone guts in it, I guess that we will be calling it the W13. Sadly, I'm expecting this to be a year late, and have half of the features removed.

This looks like no.
I am definitely not a person that buys into the whole "for a phone to look puuuuurty, it must be thin," but this *thing*...no. I'm sure the specs are lovely, but all I can bring myself to say is no. I do not like anything about its form hold the color.

agreed, i love iriver and regret not being able to buy one of their new products, but this phone looks a little brickish, not to mention a little rough around the edges. quite a departure from iriver's showing at CES.
