Nokia 6555, now in "sand"

Back when we were young'uns, red was red, blue was blue, and that's the way we liked it. Nowadays, everything needs a fancy name, and not even the simplest of colors are spared. Take AT&T's new 6555 shade, for example: it can't just be brown or beige. Heck, we'd even be cool with ochre. But no, Nokia has to get all fancy on us with "sand." Okay, okay, we're just messing around, sand's a fine name, and you can pick up the 3G flip's newest color now for about $50 on contract. Supremo Red, on the other hand...

That color has been available for a while on eBay. I personally think red looks best.

That color has been available since at least Jan 8th on the AT&T website. How do I know? I got one... it kind of sucks. If I used "push-to-talk" it might be ok, but otherwise, meh. Anyone have any better choices in the same range of AT&T's current lineup? this one's going back.

Here's my quick review/rant of the Nokia 6555:
It has a habit of turning itself off even when there is plenty of charge on the battery- three times in 24 hours. This is sitting on my desk, not in a pocket or other place where it might get bumped or jostled. I re-seated the battery after the first time this happened to see if that was the problem. No, no it wasn't.

When the battery does go out while on a call, there is a beep, and that's it. I was on a call with my insurance company, and after navigating the automated phone tree, and actually getting to a live person (about four minutes in), it beeped once and died without any other warning. The battery indicator read half full before starting the call.

The external buttons remain active when closed. I keep having to deny initializing PTT (push to talk) upon opening the phone. There is an automatic keyguard, but there isn't an option for "activate on fold" and no way to set how quickly the timeout occurs. You can manually lock the keys, but that kind of eliminates the benefit of having a flip, no?

The camera is pretty bad except in broad daylight; the lowly vga camera in my 3660 was far better quality. It had half the resolution of the 6555, but a quarter of the noise.

The main display times out after ten seconds, requiring a button-push to relight. There is no way to alter that setting... mmm...inconvenient.

The "universal" 2.5mm (3 banded) headphone jack doesn't work with Nokia "universal" plugs. I tried two different sets. It could just be a bad jack on this particular phone. I was able to use a headset by pulling the plug out one "click" and holding it there, but why would anyone want to do that?

I did get the clock thing to work, but it's upside down for a few seconds after closing, then goes to the wallpaper for five seconds, then back to the clock rightside up for a few seconds before blacking out. Then it shows a digital clock and the date after that times out. Really, the clock isn't that big of a deal, but on all of my previous Nokias, everything has worked the way you would expect it to, and that was just a flag for the fact that this phone was either not well designed, or not well-executed.

The one thing I will say for it is that voice quality is very good; on both ends, from what people tell me.

I have had the turn off on its own problem. My boyfriend went in with his "technilogical eye" and discovered that one of the battery connects is too short and will lose touch with the battery. He fixed my putting a piece of paper behind and above the battery to push it down into the connectors.

Aside from that, my only real issue with the phone is that the battery life is horrible. I get a day, if I'm lucky and use the phone minimally. And the car charger that I have (bought specifically for this phone) has stopped being accepted by the phone. I continue to get a "Charger not compatible" message when I try to hook it up.

This has been available since early January on the AT&T website. I've got one. Don't really like it and I'm generally a Nokia fanboy. Anyone else have a better choice in this range on the AT&T network?
