AT&T offers SIM-only service, attempts to maintain "most open" status
It looks like all that shouting AT&T has been doing lately about its "openness" is starting to manifest itself in the way the company does business. It's come to our attention that the mobile telco has started offering a SIM-only plan, thus providing the ultimate in open options. The idea being, of course, that you can bring any random / crappy / salvaged GSM-compatible handset the provider's way, and it'll let you hook a towline onto its satellites. Of course, you could just get one of those cheapo giveaways and pop out the card, but this is so much more open and free, like San Francisco in '69, a car-less road, some land of your own, and a good old-fashioned whiskey on the rocks. Oh, you still have a sign a two-year agreement... enjoy your freedom!

Thats really not that great cause the plans aren't cheaper and maybe even more exepensive and you can get a refurb nice phone cheap with 2 yr contract.

Satellites. Really.

I believe the point was missed here... AT&T offers no contract plans now, so you can use whatever device you want if you already bought one.
I don't even understand what this article is about. AT&T has always let you start up service with your own phone.

no you still have to sign a contract (2 year)

What? When I bought my phone (unlocked) I just went to an AT&T store and they gave me a sim, unless it was a pre-paid only thing.

This is nothing BIG. You can get a plan with a free phone (no rebates ... etc) and a 2 year contract and just swap out the sim card.
This is not even news worthy really. If they had sim only with no contracts, then yes maybe.
ATT trying to impress but a swing and a miss.

This article is pointless. All it does is emphasize a problem in the AT&T Online Store. Maybe it will get someone from AT&T to make an announcement, but that is about all.
You do not need to sign a Contract to buy a SIM-Only, I have done this recently at a Corporate Store and only maintained service for 2 months with no problems.

I work for at&t and in my market (Austin TX) if you provide your own phone we only make you sign a 1 yr contract. If you read the fine print the m2m feature requires a 1 or 2 contract

I this this article is incorrect, incomplete, or pointing out something trivial. I signed up for service back in November and brought my SE K850 and didn't get a phone, just a SIM. I was forced into a two year contract (don't even get me started on how absurd that is).
Alex, do you think I'd be able to get my contract reduced to a one-year sentence now that this is out?
Alex @ Jan 21st 2008 5:38PM
You maybe able to call cust care and see if they can set your contract to a 1 yr - or visit the store that you activated the line at. If not then I maybe able to do something for you let me know.

I can't believe there are still companies contracting people to sim only connections especially in the states. I thought that contract term sim only had gone the way of valve tube.

The thing that gets me is that the reason cell phones are even free to begin with is that they are subsidized by the cost of the voice/data plans.
If you are going SIM only, shouldn't the rates be cheaper? The phone company isn't subsidizing anything if you are only paying for the use of the SIM card.
