Verizon getting in touch with its Touch?
A poster over on HowardForums has a series of convincing shots of a little something we'd like to call "Sprint's Worst Nightmare." Okay, that's going way too far, but if this Verizon-branded HTC Touch is legit, Sprint has to be just a little bummed that it's about to lose exclusivity on the fancy little Windows Mobile piece among the big four US carriers (though Alltel's on the ball already). If it's simply the same Sprint hardware we know and love repackaged in white, we can expect EV-DO, microSD expansion, Windows Mobile 6 Professional dressed up to be about as finger-friendly as it possibly can be, and a 2 megapixel camera. Thing is, the poster says that this one's "a little thinner" than Sprint's -- amazing if true, considering that it's already a svelte and manageable 0.6 inches -- so all bets on specs are off until we get some official confirmation. Word on the street is that we'll see it in March.

I can't wait for this to come to Verizon. Although am I wrong or does Sprint not have exclusivity anymore now that Alltel has it. Anyway I played with Alltel's version and it was great. I really hope we see it before March though.

I wonder if they're going to disable active sync to force you into syncing over the air and pay them $$$.

I could be incorrect, because I don't deal with PDA's everyday, but I'm trying to think...and I can't remember even one VzW PDA that REQUIRED WirelessSync.....
Mister @ Jan 18th 2008 9:39AM
say hi to the 6900, no pda requires wireless sync.
Mike Botros @ Jan 18th 2008 10:19AM
I wonder how long I can use my new ever 2 credit for. My 2-year contract is up at the end of this month. I would love to wait for this phone if I could.
Taylor @ Jan 22nd 2008 9:32PM
You can wait as long as you like. The cycle doesn't start over again until you buy a new phone, so the longer you wait, the longer it is until they have to give you a discount again, which is a plus for them.

Correction to those who posted already, Verizon's NE2 discount expires 90 days after issuance. They don't publicize it, you have to look it up. I argued with them and they extended the discount to me beyond the 90 day mark, but the policy on the books says you have three months to use it.
However, that three months actually starts TWO months before your contract is up. If you crunch the numbers, that = 30 days from contract end. Good luck.
Mike Botros @ Feb 23rd 2008 5:18PM
oh well.. i looked into it and they only give it for the first line... and that's not my phone... mine's on the 3rd line... so we can probably get a better phone anyway for my parents for free with a contract extension and the employee discount my dad's getting...
TD @ Jan 18th 2008 10:47AM
1st of all, Verizon has not disabled Active Sync on any of there phones. It's been included with every PDA I've purchased and works just fine. 2nd, an answer for Mike, your new every 2 credit is good until you choose to use it. There is no expiration date.

I was super excited about this device until i saw the keyboard.. that tiny keyboard and tiny stylus is a dealbreaker for me.. maybe the touch 2 will have a better input system.
check out a touch preview

The software keyboard that HTC bundles with this phone isn't the default Microsoft one you're seeing. It's more like a 20 key Blackberry Pearl style keyboard. I actually found it faster than the full keyboard on my HTC Titan
Just me @ Jan 20th 2008 1:28AM
I used to have the Apache 6700 with a slide-out keyboard but now much prefer cootek.com's TouchPal Professional soft keyboard. I'm way faster than I was thanks to the many shortcuts, programmable sentences, etc.
bubbatex @ Jan 18th 2008 11:26AM
There are about 3-4 other keyboard options available from 3rd parties that many of the Sprint folks are finding work well. But white? Yuck. VZW just likes those lighter colors it seems....
DaTechnologyKing @ Jan 18th 2008 2:41PM
Although I have at&t and I am an iPhone user I like the color. I was just told about a plan with Verizon that gives unlimited mins, text (including, and web for $50. I've never heard of this plan before and I'm pretty sure this excludes any discount that come with starting new service but I definitely am excited about it and I don't mind paying full retail for the phone if I can keep this plan. So if at&t doesn't work out for me, I will definitely consider this plan with Verizon.

i think you may be smoking dope... any proof to back up this "plan" info? if thats the case yippee, but i dont buy it...
elgee02 @ Jan 18th 2008 4:29PM
It's legit and has been for a while now.
Take VZW's 1350 anytime minute plan for $79.99 and you can get a unl data and unl messaging (anyone, any carrier) bundled with that plan for $129.99.
Do the math.
CB17 @ Jan 19th 2008 7:08AM
@elgee02
You can do that with ATT too except that it's 119 instead of 129, for a difference of...YOU do the math. But thanks anyways for playing...
dr. b @ Jan 18th 2008 4:45PM
thats not what he said. read the post. he stated "I was just told about a plan with Verizon that gives unlimited mins, text (including, and web for $50." given his is a little confusing (read: random parenthesis in there). i say show me a plan with all of that (yes data included) for $50. you just told me about a plan that doesnt have unilmited mins and if i want unlimited data i have to shell out $50 more for a grand total of $129.99. nowhere in his post does he mention some # that high.
Riles @ Jan 18th 2008 4:55PM
You have six months to apply your NE2 credit, so if they manage to get this out anywhere near the March projection (a big if some will say) you are golden.
Matt Adams @ Jan 18th 2008 6:03PM
That is INCORRECT - NE2 NEVER EXPIRES. It's good until you decide to use it, then it resets to 20 months from date of upgrade.
Gib @ Jan 18th 2008 10:06PM
Matt is right, the NE2 doesn't expire. I have seen them active from 2004
Who? @ Jan 18th 2008 4:57PM
See it in March--you must mean March 2009. This is Verizon, remember?
Sean @ Jan 20th 2008 5:16PM
A conveinant detail left out but just found out elsewhere that this version of the touch replaces wifi with 3G radio because that would decrease verizon's outrageously priced data usage. I'll buy it maybe if the spectec wifi sd card works with it. classic verizon disabling/ crippling.

REAL RELEASE INFO. ABOUT THE HTC TOUCH FROM VERIZON:
ON THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 2008, AT 5:00 P.M., A VERIZON CUSTOMER SERVICE REP. TOLD ME THAT HE HAS AN HTC VERZON USER MANUAL AND THAT THE REPS WILL BE TRAINED ON MARCH 31. THIS MEANS THAT THE PHONE WILL BE AVAILABLE PROBABLY SOMETIME IN THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF APRIL I FIGURED IT WOULD BE A GOOD TIME TO ASK, SINCE THE 'BIG-WIGS' AT VERIZON HAD A TECH. CONFERENCE IN NYC ON THE 19TH AND 20. STILL, IT'S FRUSTRATING THAT VERIZON HAS BEEN SO CAGEY ABOUT RELEASING THIS INFO. STILL, GOOD NEWS FOR THOSE OF US LOOKING FOR A CDMA IPHONE WANNA-BE.
