We still don't have a launch date other than the rather large window of Q1 '08, but AT&T's starting to prep its peeps on the launch of
its MediaFLO-based mobile TV service, so we figure that's a good sign. We've learned here that in addition to the eight standard channels of programming MediaFLO has deployed -- all of which are available on Verizon's competing VCAST TV service -- AT&T will pick up two exclusive channels that are yet to be named. Pricing has also yet to be announced, but we see here that it'll be available either standalone or in a bundle with MEdia Net and Cellular Video (we still can't believe they didn't change that acronym after the Cingular name went away, by the way). Two "new devices" will be offered for the service, one of which we know to be the
Vu. A grand total of 53 cities will be covered at launch, covering about 129 million people (or so AT&T says, anyway) -- you can see a larger version of the map after the break. Enjoy!

umm... i just came across the verizon mediaflo coverage map. for those of you blaming att for the coverage, it has nothing to do with them. the area is determined by where qualcomm has signal. you can find the verizon flo coverage here:
http://www.mediaflousa.com/content/ourstory/getflo.shtml
looks the same as the att map to me...
Joe @ Jan 10th 2008 3:22PM
Yeah! I'm so excited about this announcement! I'm a little confused about why you would get the bundle though... what is medianet and cellular video going to have that mobiletv isn't?
got2bwireless @ Jan 10th 2008 5:28PM
Commission for the sales rep!
Dean @ Jan 10th 2008 3:48PM
They are going to have coverage in northern florida but not south florida!?!?!
WHAT!?!
The makes no sense!
South Florida's 3.5 million population isn't good enough for MediaFLO apparently.
Whatever, I wasn't planning on getting a new phone anyway lol.
Ry @ Jan 10th 2008 3:58PM
Do they still use channel 55 OTA?
WirelessGuy @ Jan 10th 2008 4:24PM
The reason for some of the major cities not being there is because they would have to carve out spectrum that they really don't have, or they only have 850 Mhz in that market, as I am sure this is going across 1900 Mhz
Ry @ Jan 10th 2008 5:20PM
Nope. The reason is channel 55. :)
Jim @ Jan 10th 2008 5:08PM
so does mediaflo coverage = 3g coverage. Looks like we have mediaflo coverage in Wichita KS but right now we don't have 3g rolled out yet.
Ry @ Jan 10th 2008 5:20PM
It does not.
Seth A @ Jan 18th 2008 2:27AM
Hey! That was my question too. Nice to see another Wichitan here. Either way, I rather have AT&T give us 3G here before some stupid TV service, I mean seriously.
Tyler @ Feb 4th 2008 7:25PM
another wichitan here... AT&T needs to roll out 3G in wichita soon, or they will be losing my business to sprint or alltell, both of which have EV-DO. I'm sick of EDGE.
Big Sam @ Jan 10th 2008 5:58PM
MediaFlo is broadcast. It has nothing to do with the frequency the data or voice traffic uses.

I couldn't care less anyway. Slingbox mobile FTW.
Matt @ Jan 10th 2008 7:19PM
AMEN to that comment. Gotta love my sling box on N95
DataX @ Jan 10th 2008 7:23PM
MediaFLO will be $15 for unlimited usage .. This is completely different from MediaMax. It is an extra fee. MediaMax,MediaFLO,MobiTV will be $35 all together ....
alex @ Jan 10th 2008 8:54PM
Bay Area/Silicon Valley is not qualified for MediaFLO.
How nice of you ATT?
Farwest @ Jan 10th 2008 10:56PM
Woot!... Portland, OR coverage!
cswallow01 @ Jan 11th 2008 12:57AM
So what the difference between this service and MobiTV?
Then what's the difference between this service and Sony LocationFree?
I don't think it's that much of a difference myself as most all phones should be capable of placeshifting via a client written in J2ME, Windows Mobile, Symbian or Crackberry?
Coolone3000 @ Jan 12th 2008 7:55PM
The difference between MobiTV and MediaFlo is night and day, higher quality, better frame rate, no hiccups or buffering, less battery consumption, quick channel changing, and its an always broadcasting system so you won't find at&t getting mad at you for high data consumption.
chris @ Jan 11th 2008 1:59AM
so why isn't houston being covered? we're the fourth largest city in the US!!
crow610 @ Jan 11th 2008 3:15AM
As a proud HTC Touch owner, can I sue AT&T for chosing a name that sounds just like TouchFlo?
alphaod @ Jan 12th 2008 6:42PM
Hi. I didn't know you were the President of HTC!
;)
Coolone3000 @ Jan 12th 2008 8:07PM
@crow610
MediaFlo was created and named by Qualcomm long before HTC created the name TouchFlo, so i would say yes, go ahead and waste tons of money on a lawyer and try to sue AT&T. HAHA.
