Zealot leaps onto subway tracks to retrieve iPhone
At first listen, one may assume that leaping onto subway tracks for an iPhone is completely and utterly insane, and while we'd tend to agree, it's not like we haven't seen folks do similarly zany things in the heat of the moment. Reportedly, a vacationer in New York recently dropped his iPhone down onto the subway tracks while shuttling back home, and after realizing his dear mobile was missing and backtracking quite a ways, his pal finally spotted it down below. As you can probably imagine, the crazed owner leaped down, snagged the scratched up (but still fully functional) device and managed to climb back out unscathed. Granted, we can only imagine how painful it would be to drop even more dough on yet another iPhone when all that stands between you and your current one is a leap of faith, but we'd probably just ask one of those friendly MTA employees to help us out before going mano a mano with the Reaper.[Via Switched]

The only thing dumber than buying the iphone in the first place is jumping onto the tracks of the new york subway system to get it.
Count it as lesson learned and go buy a real phone.
p.s. Engaget, quit searching the web for pointless iphone related garbage. Go back to posting real news.

Yes, yes, let's all jump on the "I'm so much cooler than the sheep public because I don't conform to trends in society by owning a popular cell phone" bandwagon. Get over it.

Was a train coming? I don't get it.
Should be safe provided:
1. a train is coming. Or
2. you don't touch the 3rd rail.
Oh, and you don't have to fight rats to get it. But the iphone isn't edible so no worries there.
Randy @ Jan 3rd 2008 3:43PM
Argh, that should read:
1. a train *isn't* coming....

Big Sam @ Jan 3rd 2008 4:56PM
I bet he can spell too.
JMcMusicman @ Jan 3rd 2008 4:55PM
He had better jump onto the tracks to get it... since he can't get insurance on it
Khris @ Jan 4th 2008 2:34PM
I've got my iPhone insured with a Zero deductible.
M @ Jan 6th 2008 10:12PM
How do you have it insured with a zero deductible? I'm sure many of us would like to be able to do the same, thanks in advance for the tip

It takes all but two seconds (yes - TWO) to hop down, pick it up, and jump back up to the platform. I've done it twice (that i can recall) for keys and a wallet...and I sit before you today punching this message out unharmed! Agreed - please stop posting meaningless garbage about anything regarding the iPhone.

And it takes less than one (yes - ONE) to be electrocuted with 680 volts from the third rail. The tracks themselves sometimes have electrical current running through them as well. Just plain stupid.

the iphone was scratched?!, what about that editor from a computer mag who did numerous scratch tests on the phone and couldn't leave even the slightest scratch??? I knew that review was BS.

The iPhone does get scratched. The point you're missing is that the PC World video shows the SCREEN to be free from scratches after their tests however elsewhere there were "scuffs".
M @ Jan 6th 2008 10:25PM
Bijan Rezvani (the "jumper") said his phone is heavily scratched, i'm sure he means the screen (the most important and relevant part of the phone), not just the sides and back.
