Could the Sidekick LX play video?
In the process of spelunking through Danger's latest software development kit for the Sidekick, one enterprising developer discovered a handful of dormant functions for controlling video playback. That got us to thinking: on the Sidekick LX's glorious widescreen display, isn't video support a totally obvious feature? Can't you just imagine perusing YouTube clip after YouTube clip -- or better yet, dropping a movie on the microSD card? We're being told that the specific functions aren't usable yet, but it's pretty reasonable to think that a future update could grace the LX with full support. And hey, Danger, if that wasn't in your plans, may we suggest you consider it?[Thanks, Mr. P]

If there ever was an update, would it be over-the-air or something that would be only in the new "Up to date" sidekickicks?

well, form reading what was posted, it could be done with an ota, but mostly likely with the lx (dont know about slide they didnt mention it). if there wasnt anything in the lx that had video than you would have to get a new device with new hardware that has some sort of video playback

I have Sidekick Lx so about how long are we talking for this ota?

I would have to ask - what would be the point of having a wide screen if the intention was to NOT support video at some point. It just dosnt make sense. Sure, you can "see more" anyway, but the practical uses for a wide screen would need to preceed those decisions for including it. Video it is. Coming soon to a sidekick near you.

I don't see why such a basic feature was "locked" in the first place. A lot of people by phones for video playback and if it's not advertised in the beginning with having it, or getting an update in the future, you lose customers.

its not the phone thats the problem. its tmobile's slow ass network that can't deliver video.
Nando @ Dec 27th 2007 2:12PM
I agree. YouTube on T-Mobile's currently freaking slow network would be a joke.

Att and the Iphone get youtube over Edge, you guys are tech snobs..
Pamela @ Dec 27th 2007 3:08PM
I can't understand why they wouldn't offer streaming video but they should have let you play your own videos on a memory card, although you would have to use headphones because the speaker on the lx for music is unusable.
Pamela @ Dec 27th 2007 3:09PM
In my comment before i meant to say "i can understand" typo, sorry.

This was a huge dissapointment with the LX... how can they NOT offer video??? I assumed it had it and when it didnt I was ready to go back and exchange it. I suppose I can live without it since I DIDNT get it to specfically play videos. If I had the money, I DEFINATELY would have gotten the iphone instead!!!!!

As we speak I am on tmobiles EDGE connection in Honolulu getting 208kps, and Im streaming youtube video's in another tab..Tethered 8100.. I used to work for verizon in florida and my EVDO never capped 380kbps. Though neither is blazingly fast, web browsing and light youtubeing is perfectly acceptable..So plz tmo add a youtube app to the sidekick and a full on video player.
