Nokia fans underwhelmed by the
N81 have been given one more shot at true love in the form of the
N82 candybar. From the model numbers and quick glance, you might think that the N81 and N82 are actually just the same phone in different form factors, but it turns out that's pretty far from the truth -- besides a camera upgraded from 2 megapixels to 5, the N82 features GPS and a physical design just a little more befitting its price tag and position at the top of Nokia's range.
Since we're all well familiar with S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 and the standard Nseries software load, we're going to keep this short and sweet by concentrating on physical design. In a nutshell: the N82 has, once again, set a new standard for Nokia build quality. No creaks, no loose-fitting pieces, nothing that feels unsubstantial. In fact, from the front, the N82 almost looks like it's fashioned from a single piece of metal (or, at the very least, metal-like stuff).
Around back, though, we find that's not true. Instead, it's all plastic here, but it's extremely high quality plastic. We were digging the pearlescent, patterned battery cover.
The camera is a 5 megapixel autofocus unit accompanied by a xenon flash and a Carl Zeiss-sourced lens, typical of Nseries devices. Of all the 5 megapixel cameraphones we've tested, we found that we had the easiest time taking a decent shot in any lighting condition with the N82. Let's put it this way: if we had to attend some event where we knew we needed to take pictures and we forgot our camera, this is the phone that we'd want in our pocket.
Naturally, the
N-Gage teaser is included here, though we weren't able to put the production service through its paces (should be available any day now -- can you feel the excitement building?). The N81 might be a little more appropriate for serious gamers thanks to its two top-mounted control buttons, but at least you'll know that the N82 has the horsepower to run anything Nokia can throw your way.
Speaking of controls, we were a little wary of the N82's tiny keys. Until we used them, that is. We were absolutely shocked to find that we had no trouble using the keypad, probably because they're separated just far enough part to prevent 95 percent of double presses. Unfortunately, the N82 lacks the N81's nifty "Navi wheel" that allows users to scroll through lists by touch, but anyone used to typical S60 navigation won't miss it, and the d-pad is one of the better we've used on an Nseries handset anyway.
So look, Nokia, the bottom line is that we're really close to being sold. We love the N95-besting camera, the GPS, the 3.5mm headphone jack, the killer build quality, and the... dare we say, chic design. You know the drill, though: just send us a N82-3 with HSDPA 850 / 1900 and the deal will be sealed, because this is one little powerhouse deserves more -- way more -- than EDGE.

Tell me I can put Android on it and I'll put one on my Delta SkyMiles card RIGHT NOW!
tnkgrl @ Dec 18th 2007 1:58PM
Until the N82-3 (which I really hope will happen), I'm sticking with my N95-3.
Matt @ Dec 18th 2007 6:21PM
How about N82-4 (1700,1900,2100 :-) )
Al @ Dec 21st 2007 2:15AM
Matt,
Since Asia is scared of the number 4, N82-4 will never happen. -2,-3 or -5 might though.
Pdexter @ Dec 18th 2007 2:51PM
When i was saw pics about this and finally when it was released i was more like...well yeah it's nice...if you cant afford N95, but now after reading reviews about it and even getting hold of one it's truly a great device. Example that camera truly out shines N95 and not only because of the flash ;) From S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 phones this could have almost had 5 stars if it had just a bit bigger screen. Maybe it was just solid add to their portfolio Nokia mono block(what they do best) andexellent camera. Screen size might be just to distinct it from N95 so holiday sales wont go down?
beya @ Dec 19th 2007 7:34AM
Yes it would have had 5 stars if the screen had been at least 2.6 inches ala N95-1, but to be honest with you I believe that this was a deliberate marketing ploy by Nokia not to interfere with N95/N95 8GB sales.
As it is I still think it is a better device than the N95 8GB. I don't subscribe to this 'I can't show it off to anyone on the bus' philosophy. Try and show any phone off here in London and see whether you have one to speak on afterwards!
It looks good, has the Xenon flash, a protected lens!, has 3G and HSDPA (here in the UK anyway), and what with the added support for swappable microSD (SDHC) cards expandable up to 32Gig!!!, what more could you ask for apart from a bigger screen maybe!!

How does the gps compare to the n95 one?
amby @ Dec 19th 2007 7:18AM
I don't have long experience with the N82 (and no experience with N95 GPS), but the couple of times I used it, it locked under 30 sec for first start and 1 second for repositioning (after tunnels).
We used it in a car in Italy (Milan - north of Lake Como). Not sure if these are good results, but for our expectation it was very good both in town and out in the mountains.
Devin @ Dec 19th 2007 8:44AM
I have done a slew of test with it at thenokiaguide.com
and it's as fast as the N95 8GB, it takes better and the GPS is faster gettting a locking sometimes after 5 seconds. This phone is just amazing, just wish it had a larger screen , media keys and Naviwheel.

If you are interested in Nokia N82, you can get more detail information here: http://www.mobileburn.com/review.jsp?Id=3836& . I am a new Nokia N82 user just for a few days. Now my phone works great. I have just tested N82 for some of the internal features it supports. I find that a-GPS and orientation sensor work fine. GPS on battery life is significantly better. I even find that Nokia N82 delivers remarkably vivid photographs, even in low-light conditions. That's really fantastic. Now owning this smart phone is not a big problem. I found it with a good price here: http://dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?deal_id=73568 , I am sure that if you like Nokia, this one will be a good choice for you.

I'm trying to find definitive answers to these n82 questions.. anyone know?
Flashlight mode?
USB charging?
HSDPA compatible with Fido?
Thanks!
davidm @ Dec 19th 2007 2:40PM
HSDPA not compatible with Fido. Why do they torture us so!
Al @ Dec 21st 2007 2:16AM
No flashlight, no usb charging, no fun for Fido
Besides, data in Canada costs 85000 dollars for 1 meg. 3G would be a nightmare.
davidm @ Dec 21st 2007 9:26AM
@Al,
Actually the $10 for $12 mb plan from Fido makes it worthwhile (barely).
The thing that is the real killer here is lack of a touchscreen.. I can't imagine using a mapping app without one. What do you do, move around with the direction keys? Do you making driving sounds too? Mmmrrrmmmm..... Mrmrrrmmm... Mrrmmmmm.. Mrrrummrmrrmmmrrmrm.... maybe they could combine it with an ngage game.
Bob @ Dec 20th 2007 9:29PM
What camera is best, The Nokia N82 , SE K850i, Or the G800 :-)
davidm @ Dec 21st 2007 9:38AM
From the many reviews I've read and sample images, the N82 is the best - best colour, best low light, best use of Xenon flash, and the best video capture mode. The only drawback is the compression is more aggressive, which means edges can be soft and details lost, and Nokia doesn't provide a way to choose compression levels. Maybe they will in an update, they seem pretty good at updating lines (at least until they're "obsolete").
Andrew @ Dec 22nd 2007 7:07PM
Not used it but using A-GPS natively it's designed to get a lock within 20 seconds and I hear that it usually does it in under 10.
And about the USB charging, for some reason haven't seen fit to extend that feature beyond their S40s yet, probably soon.
I'm really tempted by this but with feature pack 2 just around the corner (apparently it's really fast and has subtle transition effects, which I think really makes a phone feel solid) and S60 v4 + Touch coming next summer I just can't convince myself to part with the money. I already have an N93 and this is just the same really except better in every way, but still the same functionality mostly. Except the GPS of course.
rav97 @ Dec 23rd 2007 2:59PM
I bought one the day before yesterday. It's a truly exceptional phone (disclaimer: I live in Europe, so I can fully enjoy its 3G goodness).
A couple of (very minor) negative points comparing to the N95:
1) the remote control that comes in the box doesn't allow to control the music player (has only volume control and start/end conversation buttons). No biggie, I ordered the Nokia AD-43, which is reported to work with the N82.
2) it has a micro-USB port instead of a mini-USB one. Although there's a cable included in the box, it's one of the first few devices which use micro-USB, so finding another cable if you lose this one is currently a problem. This should solve itself as micro-USB becomes more widespread.
jerome @ Dec 28th 2007 1:55AM
where can i order N82??? i live in california, i dunno where to order it...thankz
Puneet @ Dec 28th 2007 9:53AM
Hey guys, i feel its going the n73 way with this phone. Sooner or later there would be a n82 music edition kind of thing coming with this in black, and this phone is going to be the next largest selling n series phone in India after n73 rocked, yes due regards to n96 which is a slider phone.
