Samsung's simple r410 QWERTY phone now available from MetroPCS
We've been monitoring MetroPCS' pages for a while now waiting for this thing to become available to purchase, and finally, here it is. The r410 candybar from Samsung features a VGA camera (MetroPCS calls it "high-resolution," pshaw), Bluetooth, and a slide-out QWERTY keypad for ridiculously easy messaging with a no-nonsense design. In fact, the fanciest thing about this phone seems to be the fact that it's available in both black and red. Grab it now for $199 before rebates.

Although they still have dumbphones, if they ever graduate past that the fact that they have $45/month unlimited plans for voice and data... that's pretty nice. Sprint's SERO plan starts at $30/month but with the limited minutes on that, you end up running at least a $50 bill each month. It's worth the few extra dollars for a smartphone, but if they ever bring one in, to not have a contract and know I'll never pay more than $45 each month... that would be peace of mind.

I have the black R410. It has been available for a couple of weeks, actually.
1) the bluetooth is just about limited to headsets only. No bluetooth DUN, no bluetooth file transfers to your PC (which means MMS may be the only way to get pictures off of your phone, since it has no memory card ... I haven't bought Samsung's data cable for it yet, but MetroPCS doesn't carry that cable ... so it might be a while before I test it).
2) The most remarkable thing about the phone, IMO, is the user interface. Nicest, easiest, most polished phone user interface I've ever used. I like it more than the iPhone's I've toyed with.
3) I used to be a TXT hater. Now I send like 30-50 text messages a day. All because of how easy it is on this phone (and that I get unlimited SMS TXT with MetroPCS).
4) it's only 1x data rate, not EVDO ... slightly disappointing, but not a show stopper.
5) I don't mind that it only has a VGA (640x480) camera. I just wish it had a flash to go with it. And a data card.
6) the web browser is pretty typical small phone WAP browser. Nothing to get excited about.
Overall, I love this phone. Decent battery, great for txting, phone quality is clear. The only things I'd change are:
1) Bluetooth DUN
2) EVDO
3) memory card and/or Bluetooth FTP
4) flash for camera

Actually, there's one other thing I wouldn't mind. I wouldn't mind seeing a GSM version of this phone, with EDGE/HSDPA/HSUPA and the 4 changes I just outlined. I'd love to have that with T-Mobile if I ever decided to jump from MetroPCS to T-Mobile. I'd definitely choose that over a sidekick or a WinMo phone.

er.. obviously the GSM version wouldn't have EVDO... :-}

I'm with John, Samsung loving T-Mobile should definitely get a GSM/EDGE version of this phone to fill an important gap in their lineup.
A QWERTY phone that is neither Windows Mobile or Sidekick based is *exactly* what I want from T-Mobile.

i have this phone in black and being a 17 yr old kid i have everything i want in this phone
the only thing is the bluetooth/ringtone bit
when someone sends me a song through bluetooth it doesnt let me set it as a ringtone...ive tried about like 3 different free websites that send you the ringtones but none of them work...it just says "unsupported file type"
other than that...im good.
