Okay, so we've had a chance to play around with this app, and as mobile
YouTube apps go, it's pretty hot (and yes, that includes the eye candy-rich iPhone version). Helio's latest stab at opening the vast world of time-wasting, brain-numbing video entertainment to its subscribers matches the very best in the market for slickness and ease of use, but that's just the beginning -- as Helio describes it, they're now providing the "most complete YouTube experience currently available on mobile." That rather boastful claim is backed up by a handful of cool features like dead simple instant
uploading, geo-tagging of posted videos using the Ocean's integerated GPS, and login capability, which allows users to rate, comment, and post video replies as they would on their PCs. Thanks goodness Helio decided to
go free with this stuff, eh? Look for it to be available to Ocean owners today.

As far as useless stuff goes, this stuff is pretty useless. Talking cats...seen it. Crotch-busting crashes....been there. Handset unboxing....hated it. Youtube is the pits.
Let's see some full-length pirated movies and music videos for a change.

It should bring full featured everything. It's as big as a laptop.
Colin @ Dec 13th 2007 8:35AM
Dude what are you talking about? The Ocean is the size a computer mouse...
Matt @ Dec 13th 2007 8:49AM
It's hardly a small device by any stretch of the imagination, but if you like it. Yay!

If you return an Ocean to Helio don't expect to get your money back.
elgee02 @ Dec 12th 2007 1:30PM
I must admit that Ocean is a sick phone. If I was to spurn VZW I'd likely jump to Helio for that bad boy.

I've got an Ocean and love it, but how about a more useful upgrade, like voice activated dialing?
DJBro @ Dec 12th 2007 2:20PM
Agreed there buddy. Voice activated dialing would be a good thing. Look for it in January, when California is added to the list for mandatory handsfree. Since Helio is based in LA, I am guessing they will follow up with voice-activated handsfree dialing when they start getting tickets for using their phones on the road ;)

You guys are kinda missing the point. You can UPLOAD ANY VIDEO YOUVE TAKEN ON YOUR PHONE IMMEDIATELY.
Thats pretty damn awesome. Say you take your ocean to a concert and video tape a clip. Send it to youtube then notify your friends via youtube. From a video "producer" standpoint this ends up having some pretty good value. Plus you can GPS tag all your videos when you upload them. Thats pretty sick too.
This is a pretty killer app, for me at least. I could care less about viewing videos, but posting the ones I just took without having to go home and upload them, thats rad.
DJBro @ Dec 12th 2007 2:17PM
BTW, I just uploaded a video, it took maybe 20 seconds to upload a 1 minute clip and was available immediately. The GPS tagging is kind of sketchy at this point... all it adds is comments with lat and long coordinates, so it doesnt actually place it on a map like flickr photos. And it also adds a mandatory "Sent from my Helio Ocean" in the comments, as well as Helio and Ocean in the tags (checking to see if this is editable next time I upload a clip). All in all, its pretty cool, but they are doing some major advertising tagging in the process.

Nice app, decent device, awful company. You can have great products but if your service is garbage, your company is still going to be garbage. Helio stinks.
DJBro @ Dec 12th 2007 2:18PM
I havent really had any trouble with them. The service is decent in my area, and its cool having both Sprint and Verizon networks to fall back on. Id say that, and the all-in pricing, is pretty worth it compared to major mobile providers...
Xan @ Dec 12th 2007 3:55PM
i have wanted the helio ocean for a long time, But the price throws me off... I wish i could get one unlocked and i doubt they even unlock them, and if they did im sure it would be quite expensive and most of the features wouldnt work...
vdogg89 @ Dec 12th 2007 7:13PM
lemme guess...
omg! omg! apple invented watching youtube on your phone
HelioOceanUser @ Dec 12th 2007 8:09PM
Not True! It was available way before iPhone, Apple just spent billions of dollars letting you know you could get it on your iPhone. iPhone's YouTube is good, Helio's YouTube UI is better, try it and make the decision for yourself.

I had Helio Ocean since August, and I LOVE it. who said bad service??? Its GREAT service. I always have service where ever I go, My helio ocean is the best gadget ever in any phone I've ever had,
i caught a great sale at $99 per month for unlimited voice, data, which means I could talk as much as i want and surf and chat with my friends unlimited. the plan never expires. my main hangup before was when with youtube, it was limited. but now, they changed it to be all accessable, which is now wonderful. so, I'm excited. Me switching to any other??? I dont think so. Helio is the best cell phone service .... oops. I called it a phone.
