It's a bit unfortunate when music is used carelessly to sell off a device. It used to be that a person would purchase a device for a chance to listen and purchase music. The box or phone makers do not care about the music (protecting artist's rights, etc.) and just want to move their "old-hand" within one year phones. It used to be meaningful to devote space to a song on a cd or tape.
Until we know the full details of the agreement, I don't know if I can offer my opinion one way or the other. But if Universal is involved, and other record label groups are in talks, then I can't imagine that it's too detrimental to the artists (at least no more so than already being associated with major label pimps). I'm sure that DRM will be involved and maybe something like it being limited to only up and coming artists but not established stars.
