An AT&T-branded Q9 with WiFi -- wait, what?
AT&T has a long, storied history of shunning WiFi on the lion's share of its smartphones in an effort to corral folks into picking up a hearty helping of its own HSDPA instead (much to the chagrin of many a BlackJack, N75, and Curve owner, may we add). Not only is an unlimited data package a significant additional expense, but coverage is still spotty at best -- and don't no one want to do serious internettin' over EDGE. Times may be a-changin', though; Boy Genius Report has somehow managed to unearth, of all things, an AT&T-branded Motorola Q9 with WiFi on board. With the Tilt reppin' AT&T's WiFi-equipped offerings in the WM6 Professional range, it only stands to reason that there should be some WiFi kit down in the WM6 Standard arena, too, so we hope this thing makes it to production. Any Q9 owners feeling a little twinge of regret right about now?

All the HTC devices have had WiFi on AT&T (8125, 8525, Tilt). I didn't know they left it off the smartphones.

Not quite there, cowboy. Neither the 2125 nor the 3125 had/have wifi.

I bought a Tilt and barely use the WiFi. I'm fortunate enough to live and work in 3G areas (in and around NYC). I haven't gone into EDGE only areas unless I go to upstate New York or Florida. Even South Jersey areas have 3G which I wasn't expecting since I thought it was major cities only.
But the picture says Cingular Wireless. This could be a pre-final Q9. It could have been tested and stripped.

At the risk of sounding like an AT&T employee (I'm definitely not) the South Jersey coverage comes from Philly being covered (which is where I'm from).

Since when is it Cigular Wireless :P
Personal opinion: Nice photoshop effort

Actually it's been a glitch in AT&T's tower ID tag for a while now. If you are around nyc, every so often, when switching from 3G to E, you will see a temporary tag that says "Cigular Wireless", then suddenly switch to say "AT&T". That's the case so far on my WM6 Blackjack.

Chris, you forgot to mention the minor detail that the guys at Boy Genius Report HAVE ONE. I thought this was a rumor pic. They have one in their hands

Why is it ATT will carry Windows devices with wifi but not S60? They sell garbage like the N75 and E62 rather than the E61i, N80 or beautiful FP1 devices like the N95-3 and N82?
Mark Richardson @ Dec 3rd 2007 4:56PM
Because they are evil. Pure evil.
Yubastard @ Dec 3rd 2007 3:48PM
awesome... I guess... if I had an unlimited data plan I wouldn't use WIFI at all, but that's just me. It's good to have a choice, though.
FunkyMedina @ Dec 3rd 2007 4:51PM
Awesome. I might not care so much about WiFi, but have the other specs improved (processor speed, bluetooth 2.0, camera resolution) ??
MeisterGeek @ Dec 3rd 2007 8:09PM
Or BGR's SIM card is an "old" Cingular card. One of my Treo's (with a firmware update still say's Cingular, with an "old" Cingular SIM, but if I use my AT&T SIM....
Anyway WIFI would be a useful addition, to an oterwise nice package ;-)
