What's wrong with the 20-key Sure-type style layout? I have that on the T-Mobile Shadow and it is excellent! Way better than a full Qwerty or numeric keypad for entering text (especially one handed). See my review here: http://www.pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=1009
I thought that I would like the full Qwerty on my Kaiser better and fully expected the 20 key layout on the Shadow to be awkward, but I was really surprised to see myself easily carrying out instant message conversations one-handedly while carrying groceries with the other hand. Obviously you can't do that with a split Qwerty or even some of the smaller Qwertybar phones like the Blackjack.

I'd rather have a full qwerty thumb keyboard. Or split qwerty (like the wibrain, pepperpad 3, samsung q1 series, or the old nokia 3300).
The Shadow type keypad looks ... awkward.
But I agree, the worst is using a the standard 12 button phone keypad for typing text.
