Well, it's finally here: meet the
LG Voyager, successor to the
enV and arguably one of the best QWERTY handsets on Verizon to date. Pretty much everyone walks away with a feature or two here that they're gonna love: EV-DO, VCAST TV, a 2 megapixel camera, two amazingly large displays, expandable memory via microSD, touchscreen exterior display and a full keyboard all make the cut. But hey, enough of the small talk -- head off to the gallery, check it out, and stay tuned for our full review!

can we get some shots with its width comparision to other phones like the treo, i760 ect?
Arthur @ Nov 16th 2007 6:07PM
awesome.
steven @ Nov 16th 2007 6:20PM
hey does the antenna shown just help with the tv signal or does it help with overall signal?
elgee02 @ Nov 16th 2007 6:41PM
Just for TV
cmonkey @ Nov 16th 2007 6:22PM
Amazing. Of the 18 pictures in the gallery, the only one actually showing the full device on and open is the picture of the picture on the box. Someone needs to learn how to take pictures...
George Bowerman @ Nov 16th 2007 6:43PM
I agree...I don't care about the specs on the side of the box, put those in the article. As a matter of fact, I don't care about any of the pictures of the box.
Take a step back and give us some pics of the whole phone.
elgee02 @ Nov 16th 2007 6:41PM
I have already played extensively with one. The touch interface is easy to use and very easy on the eyes, so far so good. Unfortunately it's not activated so I cannot vouch for the HTML browser.
Jonathan Sundy @ Nov 16th 2007 6:52PM
I'm new to Verizon phones... what's the story with the UI? Does this sync with outlook with the notes and contacts and calendar items? Is there a stylus to allow for handwritten notes in the note application? Can you install 3rd party applications like Pocket Quicken?
Verizon's site is particularly lacking in actual useful details, all they want to tell me is what fun verizon services I can pay for on the device.
elgee02 @ Nov 16th 2007 6:59PM
You want a PDA/smartphone. This is not one. Check out the Samsung i-760. You're welcome.
sgt_easton @ Nov 16th 2007 7:10PM
You are doing some serious dreaming. This is a dumbphone. You can't do any of that on this.
Matt S @ Nov 17th 2007 3:54AM
actually you CAN sync to outlook with the voyager, you need a mobile office and the phonebook manager program.
Blake @ Nov 16th 2007 7:10PM
what is the small compartment behind the battery compartment for? Looks like a SIM slot, but i don't have much experience with mobiles.
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/photos/hands-on-with-the-lg-voyager-2/493050/
Jay @ Nov 16th 2007 9:41PM
I thought it was a SIM at first and was very confused cause (as far as I knew) CDMA phones don't use them.
I think its just the microSD port. If you look at the side view you can see where it goes in and they just left that area under the battery open for some reason (ventilation?)
Ari @ Nov 17th 2007 10:24PM
based on my experience actual charge times are: blackberry 8830 - every 2 days. treo 700 - every day. Moto Q - twice a day.
gregg kryceski @ Nov 16th 2007 7:22PM
The phone looks amazing. I had the vx-9900 and it seems to have everything it had, just a largely improved version. Not going to bother with my sob story, but Verizon screwed me and I dont have a phone until I can afford one, which I can't until after the holidays. If you are going to send it to someone, please consider me.
Jason @ Nov 16th 2007 8:41PM
So, you say they screwed you, and yet you're dying to go back and give them more business? I don't get it. When a company puts the screws to me, I take my business somewhere else...
gregg kryceski @ Nov 17th 2007 2:26AM
Jason, in my area, Verizon is the only service that works. The other carriers are far below par and not worth the money. Plus even if they were good, I cant afford the cancellation fee to switch let alone money for a different phone on a different carrier.
Jason @ Nov 17th 2007 8:35AM
Greg,
I'd urge you to actually take a look around and see what's going on around you with other carriers. Everyone offers pre-paid and 14 or 30 day trials, so try, you may be surprised.
Every time I've heard the "But Verizon is the only thing that works around here" bit from people I know, I've found that my phone on Cingular works just fine, and many times, better than their precious battery inhaling CDMA bricks.
Typically, the same people are also shocked to find that I don't need to charge my phone every night.
elgee02 @ Nov 17th 2007 3:47PM
Jason... that battery sucking brick comment is no longer relavent. Unless you are constantly on the phone there is not a single phone in the VZW lineup you have to charge every night.
Jason @ Nov 17th 2007 7:38PM
Elgee,
I'd have to go on ahead and disagree with you there.
Several people I know are using VZW, and all of their phones need to be charged nightly. These are such stone-age devices as Treo 700wx, Moto Q and BlackBerry 8830. All of them require nightly charges. Perhaps you're referring to their dumbphones? If that's the case, I couldn't comment, as I can't think of anyone I know that has a dumbphone, other than my one friend who has a Virgin Mobile phone.
They're forever asking me how on earth I can go 3-5 days between charges on my Nokia N73. My response is always, "It's the Network."
The N73 has served me well, and will soon be replaced by an N82, once I can find one for a somewhat reasonable price. Monday, my new job starts, at which time my Nokia E65 will be retired in favor of a BlackBerry 8820, which also doesn't seem to require daily charges. :)
elgee02 @ Nov 17th 2007 8:04PM
Jason, I have the battery life ratings on all those phones in front of me, and I own an 8830 and used to own a treo 700p and I can easily conclude you are making stuff up.
I go 2-3 days easy without charging my bberry, and same with the old treo. Unless you wolf down 3+ hours of talking a day then there is no way those phones need to be charged every night.
daaper @ Nov 19th 2007 10:32AM
Elgee,
I agree, I routinely go for 3-4 days without ever charging my vzw LG. I'm not sure what phone Jason is talking about, but it certainly isn't any phone I've used in at least the last 4 years...
Blue Fusion @ Nov 16th 2007 7:26PM
That slot is for a micro sd card!! ... :)
pete @ Nov 16th 2007 7:48PM
When you get that phone activated can you put some pics of actual websites like engadget.com or espn.com or yahoo.com so we can see how good that browser is?
Brian Alexander @ Nov 16th 2007 8:06PM
ditto. I want to know if the browser is any good.
Anonymous @ Nov 16th 2007 8:15PM
The internet browser is just as they said it is; full HTML browser. They finally activated the one in the store today, so I've been playing around with it all day. I currently have a Samsung i760, and I'm going to swap it for an LG-VX10000 under the 30 day WFG. The Voyager uses the Mobile E-mail, so I'll still be able to get that, plus web browser, and MobileTV; and still manage to save money.
What a wonderful phone, and I wasn't even in the slightest bit interested in it until I played with it!
Anonymous @ Nov 16th 2007 8:25PM
Oh and just an addition to my previous statement; the only thing that I really can say I have a gripe with is how long it takes to take a picture with the auto focus. However, the final result totally outweighs that gripe by a long shot. The camera quality is fantastic and provides nice, vivid colors.
Sound quality on the speakers are great; providing a good listening experience with the flip closed or open. Unfortunately, the only thing I wasn't able to use was MobileTV due to the fact that it's not out in my area.
P.S.
Addition of VZNavigator with Touch... awesome =P If you've got questions on the phone, please feel free to ask. I can probably answer all of 'em.
Tim Shundo @ Nov 17th 2007 12:51AM
I am stuck between choosing this or the iPhone, how do the features compare between both phones?
Futurecelltech @ Nov 16th 2007 8:35PM
"My" local radio station 950kprc.com has podcast of radio shows. Can I use the Voyager to access the podcast using the Browser? I have XM primarily to avoid commercials and free myself from local radio chatter. I am hoping the Voyager would allow me to cancel XM as I could access a variety of podcasts available over the WWW.
CAM1982 @ Nov 16th 2007 8:57PM
Why does the font on that LG Verizon box look like it's been a modified one from Star Trek: Voyager?
Speed_Racer @ Nov 16th 2007 10:26PM
I know this is a dumbphone, but it screams to be made a smartphone. Add Windows Mobile, keep the current menu interface over top of it (like the T-Mo Shadow) and keep the Nav software and you have an instant business phone that would sell like crazy.
Does not seem to difficult to me.
elgee02 @ Nov 17th 2007 12:36AM
No way... I'd much rather have the interface of a dumbphone over any WM interface. I don't need to open excel spreadsheets and I don't use outlook... like most of the population out there. This will sell more as a dumbphone than it would a smartphone.
CB17 @ Nov 16th 2007 11:25PM
Why does that interface and whole front side of the phone look just sooo familiar... I can't put my finger on it...
Jay @ Nov 17th 2007 12:47PM
Maybe you saw it on the Prada, which its based off of
olive95 @ Nov 16th 2007 11:47PM
Does anyone know if the Voyager is able to sync with your outlook contacts and calendar?
LooP @ Nov 17th 2007 12:15AM
so with the navi. does it have it's own chipset (i.e.-SirfStar III) or does it use the verizon network to navigate, thereby having you pay to use it?
Ari @ Nov 17th 2007 10:26PM
VZ navigator. verizon is all about the pay services.
chicooo23 @ Nov 17th 2007 12:52AM
Wow is the phone really dumb let me check on that one. NO Have you even touched the device probably not. DO we care if it has pda functions and excel spread sheets only business people need. I can care less. I used it today And it was by far an amazing phone went to myspace espn. Spectacular on it. screen not glass. Though the keys may be smaller than that of the Iphone this is one sick phone. And I love it and no one can change my mind about it no matter how much vzw haters out there who which this phone was in there carrier. Thats all for now.
daniel s @ Nov 17th 2007 1:41AM
so they have them at stores so you can play with them!?!
Lil_Sunshine @ Nov 18th 2007 12:08AM
Chicooo23, it's not about using Excel or MSWord on your phone. It's about being able to add programs to your phone. To customize it to meet your needs. I have added a media player (don't like Verizon's), podcatcher, and notes program to my Motorola Q9M. I've loaded my phone with a translation dictionaries and guidebooks and novels to read or listen to on vacations. I can download them for free from my local library's website and load them onto my Q, but they only work or Windows and Palm devices. Can't even use an iPhone or and iPod for this. I listen to the New York Times which is delivers straight to my phone every weekday morning. I downloaded a program on my last PocketPC that threaded my text messages so that they displayed like a chat similar to what the iPhone or the Treo does. I miss that program. I gotta find it for smartphones.
The point is once you go smart, you can never go back. And the Voyager form factor is better suited for a smartphone than any smartphone I've ever seen.
daniel s @ Nov 18th 2007 11:56PM
to Lil_Sunshine
i had a HTC smartphone and i hated it
the windows on it was so sluggish it's really pissed me off
so i said goodbye to windows and smartphones!!!!
alex @ Nov 17th 2007 9:32AM
This looks like what you get when you try to design a device to look like the iphone and at the same time not look like the iphone.
Whenever I see a hardwired qwerty keyboard, I imagine what it'll look like in the not-so-distant future, sitting in a bin of odds and ends at the flea market.
Gmey @ Nov 17th 2007 9:41AM
Too bad the screen resolution is still not up to par with the iPhone... Bummer.
Gary Meyers @ Nov 17th 2007 9:48AM
Too bad about the video resolution. Still doesn't come up to par with the iPhone. Bummer
PEZ @ Nov 17th 2007 10:29AM
"One of the BEST QWERTY phones from Verizon to date"
Is that really saying much?
elgee02 @ Nov 17th 2007 1:38PM
Yes actually, that's saying a hell of a lot.
Reid Conti @ Nov 17th 2007 1:20PM
Verizon = DO NOT WANT.
That is all.
Cool looking phone, though. I wonder how badly VZW butchers the interface.
elgee02 @ Nov 17th 2007 1:39PM
Not butchered at all. Stupid comment.
Grant @ Nov 17th 2007 2:49PM
Not really, verizon is notorious for gimping their phones interfaces to comply with whatever lackluster services they offer, and making you pay for EVERYTHING.
but it's nice to see that verizon doesn't seem to be fucking it's customers quite so hard these days.
The D Train @ Nov 17th 2007 3:43PM
I'm not so sure if you are aware Grant, but this is a verizon wireless *Exclusive* handset, with the Verizon wireless UI, Nothing gimped, nothing crippled, it is as is. Have any voyagers on sprint to compare this to? Oh wait that will never happen. It may have features that were omited or didnt make it into the final design but it certainly was made to comply with our services, because its an exclusive phone on the VZW network. No one has actually bought the phone to say what OBEX profiles are available, and engadget has not reported on the OBEX profiles so who the hell knows.
Bottom line, your statement, and Reid's are rediculous. "Butcher the interface" IT IS A VZW EXCLUSIVE PHONE WITH A VZW UI. Are you people just absolutely smoking rocks now?
friggin retards.
