You know all those
3 megapixel cameraphones out there? Well, they're about to achieve 8 megapixel ubiquity. Samsung just announced availability of their 8 megapixel CMOS sensor which shares roughly the same 10.5 x 11.5 x 9.4-mm girth of its 3 megapixel cuz. Just make sure you've got plenty of light to frame those shots if you're expecting anything close to a quality image.

Samsung, LG, Gigabyte and Samart produced phones with 5 MP CCD image sensors last year. I own Samart's i-mobile 902 and the sensor in this phone is Sony's 5 MP ICX495 which can also be found in for example Canon's SD450 digital camera. The drawback with CCD is the need for more power: if I shoot lots of photos, the phone gets hot and the 1100mAh battery drains quickly, almost as fast as a Windows Mobile PDA battery.

You know what would be nice? If phone companies decided to use Fujifilm's 1/1.7" Super CCD sensors in their handsets. That'll probably happen when pigs fly, but still. It would be pretty awesome. :D

I wonder how much it'll cost...
