Nokia N95 gets iPhone-like screen rotation via rotateMe app

This looks to be a pretty handy app, rotateMe for Symbian OS 3rd edition devices -- a version for UIQ is also available -- lets you quickly switch between portrait and landscape modes on your handset. The neat bit is that by apparently making use of the N95's camera sensor, iPhone-like switching will become possible with the upcoming v2.0 software. Word has it that we can expect the auto switch feature in November but until then you can either run it manually or just watch the vid after the break again and again.

Wow thats better than the iPhone. Much quicker. Although I still prefer a full hardware keyboard on a smartphone.

And apparently you only need to have the camera uncovered, powered up, and running at all times to use it! Wow!

I believe that's what happens with the n95's front camera which is used for light detection at all times... so its no big deal

@Iscariote - Read zeug24's response. Engadget got it wrong, the software uses the accelerometer built into the N95. It doesn't use the camera at all. Neither does the light sensor, actually.

acctually no, the N95 DOES have a motion sensor, it always had, but it was only used to determine the orientation on a picture:

Why the hell is everything described as iphone like these days. that functionality was out before the iphone.

Why can't it be Windows Mobile like since this feature has been available for 3+ years with Windows Mobile 2003?
And this is from an Apple fanboy

I personally say iPhone because based on the OS wars, most people here are Apple fanatics. Thus, you must compare to a medium most people know about. I personally love Windows Mobile although it also rotates much slower than the Nokia. To me, its about how customizable it is. If third party apps are supported. If making applications are pretty simple. WM seems to be all of that. iPhone deals with too much hacking of the OS to get it to look the way you want. iPhone is also overrated and overpriced. My Dash was $50. Allows me to EDIT Word and Excel docs. That's key for a smartphone. DocsToGo allows me to edit PPT but I don't care much about PPT editing on the go.

The article is wrong, the app uses the N95's built in tri-axis accelerometer to switch the screen. Not the camera. Yes, even though Nokia didn't say so, the N95 has an accelerometer.

doesnt work...
i try other applications, some could run, some no....
there is a protection to unsigned software in the new firmware?
