Rogers Wireless brings 7.2 Mbps HSPA trials to Canada

Today is shaping up to be Rogers Wireless day in these parts, as the announcement of a 7.2 Mbps HSPA trial has fired up in Montreal and Brampton -- Brampton? We've seen 7.2 networks lighting up here and there and are pretty stoked to see this in this neck of the woods -- and certainly hope to see this catch on quickly. While no details are mentioned in the press materials -- like, can this be accessed by the public or is it closed -- we're gonna do some digging and -- if possible -- armed with a data card, some testing.

T'was last night I was passing by Brampton, I don't know if it was setup after this post, but I found no change or difference on my Rogers Wireless video phone (A706/Z560).
Nothing was faster, nor was it better in Video Calling quality.
Maybe it doesn't effect video phones just yet? Or the Samsung phone isn't capable of going over 3.6Mbps?

Your phone is only 1.8Mbps (http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_z560-1439.php)

7.2 Mbps @ $0.03KB = $27.65 A SECOND. (921.6KB/sec)
That's JUST shy of $100,000 an HOUR.

Or you could simply call 611 if you're on Rogers, talk to a CSR and ask for the $65.00 1GB data plan... That may seem crazy, but I'd def go that route, paying by the kb is silly.

1GB data = 8,192 megabits
At 7.2Mbps your $65 gives you about 20 MINUTES of youtube, net-radio or skype video calling.
But you're right, that would be the better way to get raped by Rogers.

Yup Rogers like to punish its data users / not sell to anyone that uses more data than they did in the 1980's.
They certainly price it as if it is something they don't want you to buy.
It really sucks that we have such a lack of wireless competition in Canada.

"Flavour" is spelt incorrectly.
Khris @ Oct 30th 2007 2:26PM
Only if you don't know that Canadians spell it "Flavour"......similar to the way we spell "Colour".
Khris @ Oct 30th 2007 2:28PM
......and it's actually "spelled", not spelt.

Canadian company, Canadian spelling, even when you alter their images.
...and check the current usage note and acceptance.

Just tried a speed test on Rogers (I'm in Montreal)...I'm on 3G pretty much all the time with my Blackjack. Nowhere near 7.2MBPS speed though...
I get 466kbit/sec response on a 400k file on the dslreports speed test.

Rogers main office (the old Nortel building) is in Brampton I believe. It is a great service, too bad no one will use it as Rogers Data is insanely expensive.

no matter Mbps/Gbps/Tbps
no unlimited=useless
Canada is THE WORST country in wireless telecom
AW @ Oct 31st 2007 1:43PM
The Brampton office is where Rogers' technical teams are located.
No one with current devices (at least the ones available here) can see 7.2 speeds, lol, no one has the hardware to use it yet!

They have to rework their pricing plan, and I'm sure they will if a real mobile company comes ever comes to Canada (ie: 3, vodafone, etc). I get HSDPA@7.2mbps(Average 6.5mbps direct to phone, 6 to laptop but it depends on where I am) service on a prepaid phone I use when in Australia that costs me $30 for 4gb/month (Data not counted includes: Email attachments, VOIP, MSN, etc). I think the prices have since gone up to $40 for that 4gb plan but its just an addon to any plan (even prepaid as I mentioned). Sadly the service is only available in majoy cities and along major train routes.
Look them up: X-Series from Three Australia. Three UK has a similar deal as well but i'm fairly sure its HSDPA @ only 3.5mbps
